My pitbull attacked my mom

So my big baby red nose "Ace" tore my moms leg up yesterday. I owned the dog since he was a pup and hes a little over 3 years old never showed any aggression towards anyone. After my baby was born I pretty much gave Ace to my mom shes had him a little over 8 months. Anyways she said she was going out to work this morning and he was laying on the end of the porch she walked past him and went to pet his head and he jumped and got her leg three times then let go for some reason. As bad as I hated to I had to put him down today before he done it to someone else or even worse got a kid. Heres a few pics of her leg though.








Doctors wouldnt stitch it up just told her to keep it as clean as possible and hope it dont get infected. They have her scared to death talking about having to amputate it if it sets infection.

Yeah it sucked to have to put him down but after that its untelling what else he might have done. And we probably wont have another dog around for a while now

thats pretty unfortunate man, but like stated before if he did it to your mom, he would have likely done it to anyone. good thing it wasnt a kid and wasnt a lot more serious.

It could have been alot worse if he hadnt of let go. The docs said after it completly heals she will probably have to have surgery becase it tore ligaments and muscle, hell the bite on the front of her leg chipped the bone.

not trying to defend the dog or anything and i do believe you did the right thing but i also believe it could have been due to that fact that you have had the dog since a pup and its 3 now you said and you mom has only had it for 8 months. yes 8 months is a long time but the dog might not have been all that comfortable with your mom yet. my pits are the same way just never attacked anyone. but i would also never just give them to anyone. they will be with me till they need to be put down because of the fact that i know the dogs and they know me. there is no questions between any of us. my female red nose is 4 years old have had her since she was only 5 weeks. best dog i have ever had. my boxer/american pit is 3 now had him since he was 10 weeks and he is the most agile animal ever. so gentile, confident, playfull, Loyal. i have never had more Loyal dogs. im sorry to hear about your mom bro, hope her leg heels well. and im sorry you had to set your dog to rest also.

Yeah that might have had something to do with it idk though, after a couple months he seemed to love it there he was always gentle and shit. I was thinking he might have been dreaming and she startled him when she went to pet him and he snapped then when he realized it was her he quit

glad you killed the dog. my dog will snap at people he doesnt know if they come in my yard, and he has killed a dog that got loose before, but if he ever snapped at my fam or me, sad to say but its time to put a .40 in his head

There's no justification for supporting the idea of keeping the dog around. It attacked so it deserves death. Sorry, but it's the truth. I support your decision OP.

Some people like to equate the life of a dog to the life of a human, but obviously the two are apples and oranges. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out if a human did the same thing he/she wouldn't be put to death nor would they deserve it, IMO. Dogs are expendable, which is why hundreds of thousands are put to death every year by pounds who are trying to give them a chance at a life. Sure they make great companions and friends, but dogs who attack humans have no right to life.

Had this same attack happened to a person walking down the road, the owner would be facing some serious lawsuits and the dog would be put down by law.

I would be willing to bet you are right OP,he might have been sleeping and dreaming and your mom came along and startled him bad enough to attack and he let go because he realized what happened and who it was.Either way good decision,I have an 80 LB all white pitbull and would hate for that to happen,he guards our house like crazy though.Im pretty sure if someone came in the house that he doesnt know,he would attack NO doubt.

I have known many people with pits. At some point they have all been a problem. Minor, but a problem. A couple of weeks ago one of the guys I work with had his 2 year old attacked by his pit. The dog grabbed his son by the head and wouldn't let go. Indoor dog, child grew up with dog, and it still snapped. It wasn't an owner issue, the dog had obedience schooling and family follow up. Its just too much of a risk for me to get involved with owning one.

Next time get a pug. Seriously unless you are a professional dog trainer and have a controlled environment (secured yard, signs, no kids) most people can't keep pitbulls safely imo.

I've personally see it happen way too many times, everyone thinks they are so kind and friendly.... sure whatever. Tell my friend who's loving pitbull bite his face off while he was sleeping on the sofa for absolutely no reason.

The are aggressive by nature, it's in their DNA to have unpredictable behavior. There are tons of animals that are naturally aggressive. Anyone who disagrees is just arrogant to the facts and should do their home work a little better.

To the OP, I hope your mom gets well. Great rid of the ghetto mutt and buy something friendly.

In general I HATE when people don't train their dogs to not jump up on people; my brother has a dog similar to a pit that punches me in the balls every other time I'm over there.

My folks used to breed these dogs and they had three that I could put my hand in their mouth to take their toys, play tug of war, and ride on them (I was a little kid).

I would only get one if I were single, since I would never leave anyone else alone with such a dog.

It is a shame that these dogs are now seen as a status symbol. When I lived in Pittsburgh I would laugh at these kids who had a pit or two just to look tough.

Wow if you have to put your pitbull in a kennel when new people come over, thats pathetic. Thats showing you know how unpredictable your dog is. I have a 115 pound rott. and I have no worries about him around people. New people or people he knows he acts the same. I bring him everywhere.

I have a 90 pound female, I love her to death. She's such a baby. It's funny people think they are a bad dog, couldn't be more far from the truth.

She's pretty old now, she's about 13 and lives back home with my mom. I gotta get my ass back to see her one last time before she passes. I grew up with that dog, she was my buddy. and I'll miss her dearly when she goes.

Pitbulls are morons and not at you but look around at the type of people who typically own them.

Then the history of what they were breed for...

My least favorite breed of dog but I've seen some really cool well mannered pits. One pit would go hang on the horse walker and we'd turn it on and watch him swing around and around. My buddies pits hang on the rope swing at the river and when he says drop they drop into the river. Powerful dogs.

Never really liked pits just happened to get this one before they put it to sleep a few years back and fell in love with it. Ive always heard all the stories abotut the nature of them but I always thought, no way my dog would do that hes too nice gentle and everything and now Ill never own another pit for sure and the wife might not let us have another dog period.
