That would get depressing. Being broke but working on other people's fancy rides all day long. Then again sometimes working on them is as much fun as driving. Well depends on if your fixing something or just modding.

That's a mean truck.

Though it's likely a ploy or a line, "losing money on this deal" could be because he needed the money he was owed more than the truck, but knew the only way he'd get his payment from the person who owed him money was to take the truck as payment and sell it just to recoup something. And something's often better than nothing, especially in this economic climate.
