i love people who are car illiterate
ok so my dads boss was going to take his sons 2001 vw jetta to the scrap yard after it died on him on the way back from UK. We asked how much the scrap yard was giving him and he said 300 bucks. He said that the fuel pump is bad. So me and my dad rented a tow dolly and paid him 300 bucks for the car with intentions of reselling it after fixing it. I get it home, and i put gas in it to see what will happen, and it started right up and ran perfectly. Turns out the gas guage is off, and it was only out of gas
so now i think i will end up doing minor body work and keeping it, to benefit from the 38 mpg. its a 2.0 5 speed. 162000 miles, perfect interior. Awesome deal. It needs a new drivers door cause someone backed into it, the rear bumper painted, and a few minor dents fixed. but cant beat it for 300 bucks. even has new tires!![]()

Re: i love people who are car illiterate
It's always nice to find people like that. i bought a 91 s10 regular cab short bed 2.5L 5-speed for $300, the guy thought the transmission went because it wouldn't go into gear. turns out the clutch master cylinder was bone dry and the slave cylinder was leaking like all hell. Nice buy to you!

Re: i love people who are car illiterate
Thats how I got my daily, a 01 ZX2. It had set for a couple of years and was told that the engine knocked. Turned out the pvc hose had rotted and fell off the underside of the intake, thats why it was running rough and wouldn't idle (a common problem on these cars). Even with putting new tires on it I still have under $500 in it and have drove it for the last two years putting a tion of miles on it.

Re: i love people who are car illiterate
Since they could not check the fuel level, you may want to check the 710 level. I hear that is important.

Re: i love people who are car illiterate
believe it or not, the oil was just changed, the filter is brand new, oil level is exact and clean. I suspect that the boss's son who drove this car, just wanted a new one and made up some story, cause i have a hard time believing that someone would not check the gas, especially when there was 300 miles on the trip meter. We bought it with the intentions of putting a fuel pump in it, instead of seeing it go to the scrap yard, so i dont feel the least bit guilty
just got lucky this time.

Re: i love people who are car illiterate
I've ended up with many deals like that over the years. Paid $50 for a 94 Cavalier with 56k miles. Was told it needed head gasket & several other fluid leaks fixed. All it needed was a valve cover gasket. Paid $300 for a Grand Am years ago that the valve stem keeper fell off. Had it fixed in about an hour for $10. We get cars towed in regularly that are just out of gas because the gage is stuck.

Re: i love people who are car illiterate
great deal. a while back my neighbor said he was going to take his car to the scrap yard cause it overheated and blew the engine. i went over there, put water in the radiator, and it ran like a top. it overheated and i told him if he gives me $40 i will fix the car, he told me ok. i bought a thermostat for $8 and he drove it for the next 2 weeks. then he totaled it. if it was a car worth having i would have bought it.

Re: i love people who are car illiterate
"What goes around comes around." its not like i went to the guys house and siphoned the gas out of it ![]() and its not like i knew it was out of gas the whole time, i went to check it out, it wouldnt start, towed it home, put gas in it, and it started. I gave the guy what the junk yard was giving him. To me, i see it as good Karma coming back around to me

Re: i love people who are car illiterate
Not super cheap, but sounds like it just needs a TCC solenoid:

Re: i love people who are car illiterate
oh i gotcha now, yea it doesnt have much power, but its not bad for a little 4 banger. Besides, with gas a 3.70 a gallon, power is the least of my worries, especially in a jetta lol

Re: i love people who are car illiterate
It's as clean as it looks in the pics, and only needs a TCC solenoid. It's not stolen and I can get a title. I have bought vehicles without titles before, it's no big deal. |
