Gotta vent--kids in their 30's
I really ain't pickin' on kids in their 30's, but the kids I've encountered on other sites working with S-10/S-15 owners. Also, Ford guys. I've had a frustrating couple of days and need to fret a bit.
I have that problem with the hazard switch/multifunction switch with stuck brake lights and all the other things that come up. I went to another S-10/15 site and all they were interested in was V-8 and turbo stuff. How's about keeping the vehicle working like it should. I'm a hotrodder myself, but things have to work. OK, I feel better. Just appreciate the guys on this forum who are apparently a bit older like I am (64) and into getting the problem fixed correctly. I love V-8 engines and swapping, but the durned thing has to be safe and dependable. Enuf of that. This week I purchased a used Carter AFB carb from a FORD guy (Craiglsist). "Oh yeah, this is a good carb", he says. Now, I'm not the guy who buys a carb and installs it just 'cause the guy says it's a good carb. I am a Carter/Edelbrock Carb guy. I get a used carb and immediately disassemble it and make it right. Then it sits on my shelf until I want to give it to someone or stick it on a vehicle I'm working on or building. I have a nice collection of AFB and AVS carbs, just for my own use. Well anyhow, I took this carb apart about an hour after I got it home and am amazed. It came from a Ford guy, so it does have the linkage for the Ford automatic transmission and that's fine. I found the air horn screws were just barely long enough to catch about two threads. What'd the screws come from? More interesting was that the power enrichment pistons, springs and metering rods were not even in the carb. Just the covers. The primary venturis were black with reversion (I guess) soot and the secondary venturies were clean as a whistle. This thing must have been neat to drive. One metering jet was so hard to get out that I had to enlarge the hole and use an easy-out. Scary on brass. Someone had used a "minus driver" and pretty much removed the screwdriver slot. He had remove ALL the hairpin clips that hold the various linkage rods. On top of the carb was a NEW air cleaner housing gasket. Perhaps Fords don't need that seal so he passed it on to me? Now I'm better. I love GM stuff. Nice looking and nice performance. What a day. Jerry in Denver |

Re: Gotta vent--kids in their 30's
Here I am, answering my own thread. I have a nephew who's 26 and what a car guy. Fix it right or don't mess with it. He's a tranny guy and knows what advice to give me and listens to others when he is learning. I'm certainly not upset with young people, just the idea of running a vehicle that isn't safe. I got absolutely no response to my thread on the other forum, but my request for help was followed with modification stuff. I modify every vehicle I have, but Geeeeez, it's gotta be operational. Old fart just gripin'. It has been that kind of day. My S-15 took my whole day that I was supposed to devote to frenching my taillights into my OLD Chevy---1960.
By the way, love this site. Yep, there's the hotrodding part, and I'm happy for that, but there's the sensible part here too. I'm tired and have many sore muscles from crawling in and out of the truck under the dash. I'm surely glad I still do this stuff at my age. It's a kick to get it done. Now I'm gonna pet the kitties and get some sleep. Jerry |

Re: Gotta vent--kids in their 30's
Oh, the multifunction switch. For some reason, I want to call it the malfunction switch. It's just a mental thing. I received a BUNCH on good info from this site on the multifunction switch and that is what led me to do what I did. I've been into vehicle emissions business with the state of Colorado until my retirement in May, '08. I'm not into guessing about diagnostics and it seemed to be a guessing game on this issue. I had an occasional dead battery after a few hours and finally notice that the brake lights were on. I also noticed that the third light (whatever the GM manual calls it) was NOT on. ODD!!! When I tried the 4-way flashers they would only come on one time and then not work. ODD!!! After reading the S-10 site I decided to think this out. All problems seemed to center around the multifunction (malfunction) switch, so I decided to try the cheapest repair using the part number for the hazard switch. Welllllllll, today it seems OK, but we'll see after a few days. When I FINALLY got the steering column opened up (no simple task), I got the hazard switch replaced and while in there I noticed that the contacts inside were pretty crudded up, so I used some electronics contact cleaner and cleaned up the hazard contacts. Then I LIBERALLY coated the contacts with that snot they provided with the switch. You have no idea how much I hope this is the repair. It's still possible that the multifunction switch is at fault, but the dirty contacts give me hope. I just love this truck. 2.2 Isuzu engine, AT, Air, with a standard cab and a subwoffer that blows my hair up from behind the seat. My brother bought it new and we traded titles last January. He has my El Camino with a 400SB and loves it. It does haul tail and has a 12 inch woofer behind the driver. Ya see, old guys ain't too bad. Just grumpy on occasion. I'll sorta forgive the FORD guy for the carb, but I will also remember him. I go to lotsa swap meets. I'll just steer clear. Most importantly, thanks for the replies and for the thoughts, guys. Be cool. Jerry |

Re: Gotta vent--kids in their 30's
The suggestion to get violent is not a good one. Heck, we all deal with people every day and some are better than others. Ya know, while working on the carb I couldn't help wondering whether HE did this stuff to the carb or whether some "Sharp" technician did it. I'd never me the guy before, so who knows? I'll just remember. Again, the price wasn't too bad since I have a few parts to make a carb work. I am not a dealer or paid mechanic, just a guy who works on his own cars for fun. Many people want me to deal with their cars, but heck no, I'm busy on my stuff.
Oh yea, about the kitties. We have four kitties and I just love all of 'em. I'm not a dog person, apparently, 'caust the kitties give me calmness. One is about 15 years old, one about ten, one about three, and the kid is about 11 months and he's a pistol. The three-year-old has a missing right-rear leg, but hauls ass anyhow. Sorry my mention about the kitties wasn't what some thought. I do like the other too, but gotta keep up appearances. Old guys are supposed to be smooth. Well, I like the smoothe customs (cars). Who's gonna be at the GoodGuys Kansas City event in September? I'll (hopefully) be there with my red and black 1960 Chevy Sedan Delivery. I'm from Denver, CO. Look me up. Can't miss the Delivery. It's different. Fins, kinda low, Supremes and shiny. Off to sleep. Jerry |

You're kind of an odd duck around here, I like you so far though. Stick around, us "kids" could probably learn a few things from you. By the way, I have an S-10 Blazer with a 400SB. Am I some kind of punk?

Re: Gotta vent--kids in their 30's
Well, the old fart is back on line. Been kinda busy, as usual. Ya know, while I was working I thought retirement would provide plenty of time to do my things, but even with ALL the time, there isn't enough time to do it all. I've applied for 48-hour days, but no reply yet.
This seems like a nice bunch of guys here. Thanks for support. Yep, guess I'm one of the odd ducks. I really do like the S-10/S-15 trucks. Mine will stay pretty stock 'cause it's my daily driver, but I do like 'em customized and lowered. I'd probably lower mine, but my wife wants to use it for going over some of the gravel roads in the mountains for gathering pics for her art projects. She's an artist, but I ain't. Been working for about a month frenching those taillights into my '60 Chevy 2-dr sedan and now I'm down to putting a small amount of fill around the welds and hitting with primer this week to see how they look. With primer on I can tell where I warped the metal while welding the buckets in. Got the bum carb all rebuilt and it should work just fine. Strange thing is, the guy who sold it to me said the vehicle it was on ran just great. Hmmmm. So far, the brake lights have not stuck on. I suspect the new hazard switch wasn't needed. The contacts were so dirty that I wonder if there was an occasional electrical bridge that put two circuits together that shouldn't have been connected. Had to crack the old switch getting it out, so had to use the new one anyhow. Oh yeah, puttin' a 400 small block in an S-10 sounds great. I used to have three vehicles at one time with 400 engines and I just love the torque. Gotta shut up and get to the garage. The day is wasting away. Happy 4th to all. Jerry |

Re: Gotta vent--kids in their 30's
By the way, since I'm an old guy, I don't know 'bout posting pics, but my two '60 Chevys are on Cardomain. How the heck you find the pics on there, I don't know, but probably search the '60 Chevys. The delivery is red/black and the sedan is mostly silver with prime spots. The sedan is pictured just as I purchased it. The delivery is my work. The sedan is now being worked on. Gonna be awhile, but it'll maybe look kinda neat. The driver is a '98 Sonoma 2-wheel drive, 2.2, AT with A/C. Nice truck and a gutless wonder compared to the 400SB in the Camino I had. No pic of the Sonoma yet. It's a copper color with matching shell so I can hide my treasures I buy at the salvage yards and swap meets. Jerry |
