Funny things from Germany...

Don´t know if someone is iterrested, but:

Here in Germany the word of the year is "Abwrackprämie", means something like wrecking bonus...

If you bought a new car equal what car it is, it only have to be new, and you gave your old car for wrecking, you get 2500€ (3250$) from the State!!!
The old car must have been yours for about 1 jear, and it is equal how this car looks like.....
Since January they wrecked about 1.200.000 cars.
And today they decided to go on until December or until they have payed 5.000.000.000€ .
They want to go against the economic crisis.

Its terrible what cars they wrecked...
Here are some examples:
http://www.focus.de/auto/gebrauchtwa...did_21727.html

And a picture, how it looks like at german junkyards :

At first glance, that seems like a MUCH better stimulus package than giving all the money to the automakers.

Re: Funny things from Germany...

When buying a brand new similar car, the gov't gives you money for scrapping the old one. Keeps more tax money flowing, and newer cars on the road.

i disagree here, alot of good cars would get scrapped if they brought that to the US, classic trucks, muscle cars. works in progress...

Um, much like last summer, when people were scrapping perfectly running vehicles?

And if it's a work in progress, it's sure as hell not being traded in towards a new car.

well yes, but a work in progress just means something that isnt a show truck, to me anyways.

Neither would I, nor would most people. At least those in their right minds, anyways.

I guess it boils down to what they consider a "comparable" vehicle. Trading in a 1969 Chevelle SS wouldn't necessarily compare to a 2009 Chevy Monte Carlo. If I comprehended that article correctly, it only applies to trading a vehicle in for a comparable new vehicle.

Re: Funny things from Germany...

To the best of my knowledge, it's very difficult to have an older car on the road there, anyway... I didn't see any rust or anything that would be considered even "moderate damage" on any of those cars in the yard... I know in England, junk cars need to go to a dismantler, and EVERYTHING that can be recycled, is.

Can't just walk in off the street and walk around to pull parts, like we can here.

So, when they're saying "comparable vehicle", I would imagine it's like trading in a 89 Taurus for an 09 Fusion, etc....

Re: Funny things from Germany...

problem is that if you are poor, and need a car, there is a now very limited market of affordable older automobiles, because they have all been crushed.

Nobody mourns the loss of a high mileage 91 Corolla, except the guy who needs a decent $1000 auto so he can get to work and support his family. Maybe its a student trying to get ahead by taking classes at the community college while working 2 shitty part time jobs. It's always the people living right on the margin that are hurt by things like this.

Re: Funny things from Germany...

Yes thats the problem, if you search for a cheap car, you don´t find one, nearly all are pressed.
And you don´t see older cars on the steets, only these plastic-made-new-not-smelling-all-the-same-vehicles

By the way, you get these money if you give your old car, equal what for a car, it only must be older than 9 Years, and more than one jear yours.
So you can gave a 1995 Mercedes s500 for a new VW Polo or a Fiat500 from 1996 for a BMW750i, for example. It will bring you all 2500€.

Its a shame to press all these cars, also parts for my s10 are rare now, because all the Blazers sold here in Germany in the 90s are gone...

Re: Funny things from Germany...

I see a Saab in the first pic and some Focus tail lights that would go for a bundle here in the other pics.

My friend moved over there and recently bought a new Focus. He wanted an older BMW, but couldn't find what he was looking for. Perhaps this is to blame, maybe not?

I understand the reasoning, emissions & safety mostly, but it kinda makes me sad too for all the good cars that get scrapped.

Re: Funny things from Germany...

Yes these trucks are really rare here, you see sometimes a Blazer, because they was sold here in Germany in a Europian version. But not the Pickups, they wasn´t sold here, so they are mostly imported by US-Army members, when they came here to the bases like ramstein ...
Mostly cars here goes once a jear to the inspection to a garage, and every 2. jear you have to go to Technical Inspection Agency, they check everything at the truck/car, and if something is wrong you have to repair it in 2 Weeks and show again. If something important is wrong, they hold the Truck there, then you are nor allowed to drive it home
So most of the cars whitch are pressed now are in good condition, mostly all of these cars are rust free, for example the Audi 80 from 1997, it was full zinc coated, absolutely rust-free, a shame to press it

An other bad thing of these political ruling is, that the small garages, who repairs these older cars for cheap now had nothing to do, because the new cars had a 2 jear guarantee. So the owner go to the shop where they bought the car, not to these small garages...Many have to close now

69' Chevelle SS wouldn't compare to an 09' MC mostly because it doesn't exist .

It seems like a good plan in Germany. Look at all the cars and tell me you would buy one in 2009. They are just getting rid of all the cars that no one really wants to buy.

Germany Still Looking for Freedom from David Hasselhoff

By Hannah Pilarczyk

REUTERS
Actor and singer David Hasselhoff will perform in Berlin shortly before the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

For years, the world has mocked Germany for its love affair with David Hasselhoff. And, for years, Germans have been hoping that the world would forgive and forget. But now that MTV has invited "the Hoff" to perform in Berlin, just like he did 20 years ago when the Berlin Wall came down, their hopes have been dashed.
The Germans have some fairly devastating national trauma to deal with: in addition to the obvious, there were several decades of living in a country divided in half, being stuck in the middle of the Cold War, the non-sale of Opel this week, the controversial Wembley goal of the 1966 World Cup. And then, of course, there's David Hasselhoff.

Countless embarrassing conversations have started like this: "Hasselhoff is still a star in your country, isn't he?" It's not meant as a compliment. The cause of all this, of course, is one of Hasselhoff's songs, "I've Been Looking For Freedom," which dominated the charts during the period of German reunification.

In the 20 years since then, Germany has had plenty of pop stars; bands like the trance-dancing trio Scooter and heavy- metal rockers Rammstein are well known in the country. But, outside of Germany, everyone still thinks Hasselhoff is Germany's biggest star. The international success of pop-rockers Tokio Hotel has gone a little way toward improving the situation. But now, thanks to MTV, the legend will live on. On Thursday evening, Hasselhoff will be onstage in Berlin for the Europe Music Awards.
