doctor said broken hand is fine

i broke my hand about 3 weeks ago, and i wasnt sure it was broken until the swelling went down..i finally went and got it xrayed and was told i have a boxer's fracture which is the bone under your pinky knuckle..its broken in half and i can see it sticking up under the skin..the doctor today told me that it was fine and that bone would be sticking up forever now and didnt even put it in a cast..i asked him why it makes a popping sound when i move my finger and he said its because the fracture is moving. wtf how is that fine? i realize i might have waited a while to get to the doctor, but i figured they might at least rebreak it so i wouldnt have to deal with it forever lol..anyone else had anything like that happen?

Re: doctor said broken hand is fine

I was in an accident at work and had to go to the company doctor Thought I had broken my nose. Got through sitting for an hour (now 5-5:30PM) to be told that there was no radiologist on staff that could help, the only guy left wasn't qualified for X-rays above the neck. Was told I was fine, and I could come back tomorrow if I wanted.

Work wanted me to, so I did. Ended up I had broken my nose in 2 places. It had set relativey straight (ended up bumping it later and it set crooked, but never mind that). Doc was going to let me go as-is. I asked for some tape so I could at least tape it to keep it straight. Doc goes rummaging through a drawer, finds a roll of tape, gives it to me, and says "It's not what I was looking for but it should work." WTF?

Re: doctor said broken hand is fine

Doctor did the same thing to me when I snapped my wrist in two. He was wiggling it around, said it was fine. I went and got xrays myself, clean break of bone parts of the bone, went back to the doc. His excuse was "Oh you weren't making any sounds of pain while I moved your wrist around". No shit, I was almost blacking out.

4 months in a cast, and the day I get it out, it snaps again, and back to the cast. Worst high school years ever.

Re: doctor said broken hand is fine

Crushed my left ring finger in a machine in a factory i was working in. Went the the local ER (small hospital) Xrays showed nothing broke but i needed several sets of stitches. They put me in one of those metal finger splints and sent me home. Continued WICKED pain for 2 more days then went to the Factory's recommended dr. He took one look at my finger and said "You're going to the Hand Center". Monday we go to the Indiana Hand Center in Indianapolis, they find my knuckle is in 3 pieces and I have to come back the next day for surgery!

18 months, 2 more surgeries and I have to have my finger either fused solid or amputated. I chose amputated! 9 fingers rule!

As a child, my wife managed to brake both wrists at the same time while rollerblading. As a freshman in high school, she went back to the same hospital for a surgery and the doctors remembered her as the girl that broke both her wrists.

I had a boxer fracture about a year and a half ago. My pinky knuckle just sits lower than the other. I was in a splint and cast for a month.

Oops, managed to misuse "brake" for "break". Dunno what happened on that one.

Re: doctor said broken hand is fine

heh...

when i broke my leg and dislocated my ankle back in december, i went to the emergency room straight form the ice rink(got tripped playing hockey) they gave me some pain killers and took x-rays... the PA came back in like half hour later and said they paged the orthopedic surgeon, 3 hours later the PA keeps coming back in saying they keep paging him and nothing etc. So he finally comes in with the head doctor and the x-rays. He shows me my fibula is shattered and says that they'll just put a splint on it cause thats all the ortho woulda done and sent me home... BUT i had to go see an ortho in the morning asap!(seeing as it was 2AM by the time i left the hospital) I go to my ortho he looks at my x-rays i gave him and goes, tell me what happened. I explained everything to him and hes like so THAT'S why they let you outta the hospital. I looked at him weird and he explained not only did i shatter my fibula but i dislocated the ankle and tore EVERY ligament in my ankle. Doc goes did they give you pain killers, i said yup percs and he goes take 2-3 i'll be back in 20... he then attempts to set my ankle(them percs didnt help for SHIT!) does more x-rays and says he didnt get it on the first try and he doesnt wanna try again cause my skin was now caught between both bones of my ankle and that im going in for surgery sat morning first thing... its been a fun 10 months with multiple surgeries since then lol

Re: doctor said broken hand is fine

I did that in High-school punching a locker. I got a thing that put constant pressure on the break and it healed up to a 5º angle and I think up to 20º is acceptable. Try and find you one of those things it worked awesome no bumps on my hand.

Re: doctor said broken hand is fine

Yep, I had that from punching a dumpster, thanks to my father pushing my buttons. Doctor said it was a boxers fracture, was the first time I had ever heard of it and and there wasnt anything he could do about it. Hurt like hell for about a month and my hand looked like a balloon for about 4 months but it finally went down and everything has been fine since.

Re: doctor said broken hand is fine

You'll be fine. I did the same thing a few years ago. Went to the doc after about 3-4 weeks, and found the same thing. Healed up fine. Just a slight bump under my pinky knuckle. After 3 weeks, there's not much a cast is gonna do for you anyway, as it's already started to heal.
