Dead Man's Car
Would you buy and drive a car that someone died in or was killed in?
Why do I ask such a question? Earlier this year on May 22nd, my girlfriends cousin Chad was shot and killed during an attempted car jacking. ( http://chronicle.augusta.com/stories...t_519372.shtml ) About a month later they arrested the 2 prezidents listed in this article > http://chronicle.augusta.com/stories...t_700943.shtml So time goes by and evidence is recorded and property is released back to the family. Then last night im checking out craigslist looking for another project vehicle and I come across this > http://augusta.craigslist.org/cto/1403503668.html . So I called my girlfriend and told her about it and she says she wants to go see it. So we did. Turns out his family got it back and are selling it to recover funeral expenses and give Chad a headstone. I walk around it and check it out and look under the hood and look inside but I didn't want to touch the interior. (it was clean, but i still didn't touch it) I wanted to see if its really worth the money their asking, turns out its really not. Its got shiny wheels and had nice paint but theres dents down one side of it now from where it was ran into the woods. As Chad tried to drive away he passed out, drove it into the woods and hit a dead tree which fell alongside the car. The part that creeped me out was the steering wheel was really loose on the column (some sort of aftermarket woodgrain wheel). I could see it wasn't sitting right on the column. After Chad passed out he slumped over that steering wheel and died. That drivers seat was the last seat he ever sat in. At his funeral everybody talked about how much he obsessed about his car. Just like we do about our trucks. We pour time and money into them to make them unique and to fit our style. Chad was proud of that car. He spent his money to put a new engine in it, have it painted, put rims on it, from what im told it had a pretty badass system in it. Then two dumb motherf*ckers kill him because they wanted to steal his car from him. WTF! Okay, I had to vent my thoughts and experiences of yesterday somewhere. Back to the original subject. If you knew someone was killed in or died in a car, even if it was an awesome deal, would you drive it? My girlfriend asked me if I was going to drive the car when we went to look at it. I was like, NO! It doesn't feel right to drive a vehicle with that sort of history attached to it. I couldn't drive a car where someone was murdered because of it. Much less sit in the same seat someone died in. Even if I had the money to drop on that car without a second thought, I would part it out. It wouldn't feel right to put it back on the road. |

Re: Dead Man's Car
quick question for anyone that says no, they couldn't drive a man's car who got murdered in it. . .do you have a problem with where u live?. . .i mean, europeans came here almost brought extinction to an entire species of animals and forcibly removed the original occupants of the land you now live on (either by outright killing them or relocating them, where a large percentage never survived the trip). . .it's a personal decision, and i'm not faulting anyone that wouldn't own or drive the car, but it seems far more significant to me that possibly an entire village of native folks were "removed" so that my home could eventually be built on their land than the fact that someone was killed in the car i now own. . .

I was asking a cop about the local counties confiscated property auction. She told me the GBI takes the worst vehicles with lots of gruesome aftermath and crushes them. |

I think I could if I didn't know someone had died in it. If I knew, nah, don't think I could. Especially if it was someone I knew like in your situation.

Re: Dead Man's Car
Yeah, I would.
On a similar note - when we were looking at houses, we found a really nice one that we wanter to put an offer in on. Afterwards, my dad pulled me aside and let me know that one of the former owners had died in the house, and would that bother me? We didn't know which room either. It wouldn't bother me, but my wife was kinda iffy on it. What if we pulled up the floor and there were spots on the concrete or something? Ended up not getting it, so didn't have to worry about it. |

Re: Dead Man's Car
Well I guess it depends on you. I personally would not mind buying something like that and repairing it and kind of use it as a reminder that he loved it and would have liked to see it "rollin".

Re: Dead Man's Car
my step dad has a 65 c10 that someone was killed in back in the 70's(wreck). it was rebuilt and it was the first truck he ever bought. still sitting behind our barn awaiting a restoration.
of course, like someone stated before if i knew the person i probably wouldn't buy it. |

Re: Dead Man's Car
I use to have a 89 cadi hearse. Didnt bother me that dead people were transported in it. The wife made me sell it when she found out about it 6 months after I bought it. So I guess to the original question, yea I could drive it.

Re: Dead Man's Car
Don't think I could, I would feel a need to honor the person who died trying to keep their property, and I know it would never leave my mind.
I would do it if it was my friend's car and I knew the way he'd want it to be done. |

Didn't die in the house, committed suicide in the house. Don't know where, don't know how. I realize that, if messy, there are cleanup companies, but I would be weirded out if we pulled up flooring and there was a stain on the concrete or something (chemical or otherwise). |
