buddy as my boss

Well when I got laid off in dec I took a job with a buddy of mine. I only took it since they were willing to work around my schoolin. And now im waiting for the state board to accept my waiver. So in the next 6 mos ill be hopefully workin at a hosp. Now the problem is my buddy. He's my boss. And we butt heads constantly. I'm trying to figure out how to tell him im quitting to work part time at mcdonalds, without telling him why. I'm moving back home and halting work on my truck. I just want to be able to salvage our 15 yr friendship. Anyone else have had similar problems?

Re: buddy as my boss

just be honest. tell him you'd rather work at McDonalds then to lose a good friend. I've worked with a lot of friends over the years and its not always easy. I've quit a few jobs because of friends.

Re: buddy as my boss

if he's a decent friend he'll understand. if he gets pissed and can't accept it, then tell him to kick rocks and go bone his old lady.

Re: buddy as my boss

Well I'm the only builder there. And im quitting on monday, Without a 2 week notice. Just to the point to where I'd rather flip burgers part time. And why would you even say that? That's just not right. I hope you treat your friends better.

Re: buddy as my boss

since i'm a fan of irrational responses to perfectly reasonable situations, i'd go with shooting him in the face, he'll understand that you aren't happy with the work situation after that. . .

now you never mentioned that you aren't giving a notice and you already plan on leaving him up shit creek.

if you want to keep him as a friend, then you need to talk to him. give him some notice so he can find another builder.

otherwise he might wind up f*cking your old lady after you quit

Re: buddy as my boss

yeah, you really should give him some notice. just deal with it for a little longer and do the right thing by giving him a fair amount of time to find a replacement.

Re: buddy as my boss

damn if i had posted later, i'd recommend him shooting you in the face instead. . .you're going to leave a buddy high and dry without notice, knowing you're the only builder. . .that there is a dick move, even if you guys butt heads at work, that's no reason to purposefully dick him over. . .

Re: buddy as my boss

I was in a position similar to this once. I finally pulled my friend aside and explained to him that I could no longer work with him because it was going to affect our friendship if we didn't part ways professionally. As it turned out, he was going to pull me aside that night and ask me to resign because he didn't want to lose our friendship.

When I told him I was giving him a 2 week notice, he stated that if I wanted to finish out the 2 weeks, that was fine, but he didn't believe in long goodbyes and told me that I could either finish out the day or the two weeks, either was fine. I was so fed up with his BS that I opted to leave at the end of the day. He already had someone lined up to replace me, so all's well that ended well. We're still good friends to this day, we just can't work together.

You may end up being in the same boat. Keep in mind that he may already have a replacement lined up for you, too. Talk to him. It may just work out like it did for me.

If you walk away without notice, don't even think for one minute that you'll keep a friendship with him. That's a d-bag move on your part and if that's how you treat a friend, you're going to one day find yourself very old, very cold, and very alone.

Re: buddy as my boss

Your "buddy" sounds like he is a better friend to you than you are to him.

Which now questions this "And we butt heads constantly" statement. Are you butting heads because you can stand having a buddy as your boss?

that probably sounds like the case. . .i've worked for friends before, and i've had "work buddies" become my boss ahead of me. . .but that whole ditching out of a job and leaving his "buddy" high and dry makes me wonder who was the one who caused the butting of heads. . .hell, i'm still "friends" with guys that didn't get laid off at my last job that i know i did way more than they did on a daily basis. . .to me, it sounds like he probably didn't like the fact that he had to answer to his buddy, and that's the reason they had issues. . .

Re: buddy as my boss

First thing is that friends and business usually don't go hand in hand. Second off, if you weren't happy with your job for whatever reason, I think you should start with letting him know, so that you two can figure out a way to get the work done without being at each other's throats. I agree with everyone else who said that leaving without a two week notice is a bad idea. Just try to talk to your boss, and if it doesn't work out THEN give two weeks.

Re: buddy as my boss

even if the notice is only like a week or so... its better then just saying "i quit an not comin back"

explain why and that your friendship is more important
i'm sure he will understand exp. if u two have butted heads...
