Am I getting ripped?
took my truck in for what I thought was going to be u joint and carrier bearing replacement, but come to find out it was my cv joint. The shop more or less gave me two options, but they just sound alot to me for what they are.
Option one, get a driveshaft shop to weld up were the joint was, and just make it one solid piece from the carrier bearing back, Quoted about 350-375 for this. which sucks IMO b/c it leaves me stuck at the ride height I am now without more work and money. Option Two, replace whats broken with just OEM parts, dude said it was going to be in the 600 dollar range. I just don't see why it would be that much for a c.v. joint..... Am I getting ripped here? Or does a cv joint replacement by a decent shop actually cost this much? And what are the pro's /con's of going to the one piece deal vs. just getting whats broken replaced? |

Re: Am I getting ripped?
Sheesh.....really? Man I hate being a broke college student....either option is gonna kill me financially for the month...damn. I think I'm gonna end up going with getting the shaft redone and gettting the joint taken out. A, its cheaper, and B, Assuming I don't change ride heights, it seems to be more reliable in the long run.

Re: Am I getting ripped?
Didn't think about a junkyard really. Im at college and not at home where I can get a second vehicle or time to do all these things with. Im kinda stuck till I get it fixed one way or the other so I can even have a working vehicle to use. So whats the biggie against eliminating the cv. joint? And what should this be costing ball park figure? Im stuck b/w a rock and a hard place here with my options on repair, and cost alone, and need to make the better decision here.

Re: Am I getting ripped?
If this is about a 2wd S10, it's not a CV joint it's a double cardan joint. The new carrier bearing can be expensive and the two piece drive shaft can cost over $1200. You could if you really wanted to, have a shop build a one piece drive shaft for you. I'm really not sure why S10's have a two piece driveshaft, and Silverado's have a one piece

Re: Am I getting ripped?
I just put all new joints in my driveshaft. 5 of them. Seems to be all good now. No more vibrations.

Re: Am I getting ripped?
Just call a driveshaft shop and price a one piece shaft and ditch the 2 piece

Re: Am I getting ripped?
that's what they are doing...taking the whole joint assembly(w/e it's called, im all confused now) thats right behind the carrier bearing....and just putting solid shaft in its place.

Re: Am I getting ripped?
That's your best bet to eliminate that carrier and just get a one piece..Makes a more simple setup with less crap .. Every ex cab -long bed I have ever owned I put a one piece in it .I would call around and get prices take some measurements and call shaft shops for quotes

Re: Am I getting ripped?
You're not getting ripped, you're about to get raped without the lube.
I got rid of my 2 piece, 5 joints, double cardan for custom single piece for $225. Installed it myself, but had to remove stock notch above cab and clears fine, although its bigger than stock(3 or 4" diameter) so my rear fenderlip can't go lower than 15.5" otherwise I'll rub on bump. It's 1.5" lift in rear so I clear at full droop and as low as 14.5" before touching cab. They did offer 2 piece without double cardan for $230, that's making new one, NOT repairing the old 1. I also left crossmember on. 1 more thing, I shaved 10-15lbs off from stock driveshaft and also a choice of steel or aluminum as well including new u-joints. I have to say, if I own another ext cab, single piece driveshaft is FIRST mod I'll do and if I lower it and I'll make notch for it in cab if needed, it was day and night difference. I posted pics somewhere. |
