S-10 from Finland

Hey guys!

So I bought an S-10 couple months back. Paid 650 euros for it, (nearly the same as US dollar these days I guess). I think it had about 140tkm in the odometer(less than 100tml), Bit of an issue is that it had been sitting somewhere for last 8-9 years. It was inspected last time 2007(In Finland we have inspection every year) and oh boy the sitting hasn't done good to this thing. It was driveable but pick it up in a trailer when I bought it because the rear frame was GONE. I knew that when I bought it so it wasn't a suprise. These S-10's are just super rare these days in Finland, there are none for sale atm with short bed and short cab. I think one with a long bed but I wanted a short bed 2wd... Always wanted a pickup and this one was cheap and "everything" I want except it has an Iron Duke instead of 4.3... oh well, I need to think about the engine later, because, as I told, damn that rear frame was rotten away:

This is what it looked like when I picked it up, the bed isn't attached to frame at all in that image, it was just sitting on top of it.

Now the jummy part.

Started fixing it...

+++ million little things.

So the rear frame is ready for paint now. Started taking apart the front end. Passenger side front fender seems okayish, need little welding but nothing I'm not used to. The driver side is the worst in the front as well.

The front frame seems okay, no rust holes, so I'm confident that I dont need to patch the front frame. I'm going to change the control arms just to be sure, I guess those would do if would paint them but an control arm is an control arm if it breaks during driving its no bueno.

I'll keep u updated...

And english is not my native language so hope you guys understand what i'm trying to say... Say if dont so I try to make myself clear

Is a radiator support from a second gen S10 Blazer totally different compared to 1st gen?

Welcome to the forum. Aside from your welding skills, and probably others, you have another skill that most of us do not...speaking a second language. The core supports are different not only between 1st and second gens, but different between some years in both gens.

Re: S-10 from Finland

Wow, I can't believe how bad the frame was compared to the body. Nice work so far.

A 2nd gen core support won't work. 91-94 SUV or 91-93 pick up will work.

Re: S-10 from Finland

Welcome!
X2 what Mo said. I have never seen a frame that bad and my 4x4 is BAD...

What keeps you from importing an S10 from USA, aside from cost? Are there restrictions in Finland?
I lived in Puerto Rico for about 1 1/2 years, and they SLAM you with tax bringing cars in from the mainland. Older vehicles are not as heavily taxed, but WOW for stuff under 7 years old.

Nice work on frame recovery...

And BTW, your English is better than some on the forum...

Re: S-10 from Finland

Thanks guys!

Importing another body could have been an option, but this is my, if you will "second" toy, first one being the '80 Cutlass I bought when I was 17. (now I'm 21.) I really didn't have money for importing car, because it would cost i guess 2-3 big ones. I guess taxes wouldn't be issue since these cars are already a bit old. I didn't even planned buying a pickup, this just happened to be close and pretty cheap so I thought what the heck I'll buy it

Its really crazy how bad that rear frame was. the body itself really is GOOD compared to the frame. Sure I'll need to make a few patches here and there but nothing huge, I guess

Keep the pix coming!

Question: Are there any requirements that the Finnish motor vehicle requires to run an American rig in Finland? I know some countries require an orange directional signal and other minor changes - for example.

^^^required....there is another member from Norway...maybe Sweden...someplace cold and snowy that said the side markers on the tail lights have to be painted over. Not sure of the reasoning on that.

Re: S-10 from Finland

I think the side indicator is a "must" car produced from 1985->. I'm going to delete them and hope the inspector isn't too interested about my lights... I have red rear sidemarkers in my Cutlass. In the first inspection the inspector said that I should delete them but now I have driven that thing 4 years and no one have said anything about them.

Hazard lights must be deleted! Thats funny, finnish people are so stupid that two red lamps flashing is a rail road passing so they must be deleted

And if you have a car with a turn signal that goes side to side (don't know the english name for that). That function must be deleted. Thats all I figured quickly? Stupid things...

The Cutlass:

Rebuilded a 403 for it, anxious to drive that thing, I have driven it with mild 350 for 4 years.

Nice looking Cutlass.
I have a 403 in a 79 Firebird. It's pretty stout. Surprising for an Olds...

I figured there were a few differences for the Finland motor vehicle, but I figured more than what you described.

Re: S-10 from Finland

There might and will be more differences, I can update when I figure out more differences.

I like the Cutlass myself too alot, doesn't matter to me its a 4door I guess its pretty much no go for you guys but there wasn't much to choose from when you're 17 I think the 403 is pretty cool engine. Did a girdle for it, KB hyper pistons, Lunati cam with .511/.522 lift, C heads from big block olds. Hoping it will make 400hp and will make killer torque...

Today I took the front end apart, started it the otherday tho.

Thanks!

Scored a real nice radiator support in the near "junkyardstore"! Zero rust

I would LOVE to have a Bravada grille. Does anyone have one AND would be willing to ship it to Finland. I dont know much would it cost but I guess it cant be THAT expensive since I have ordered from US million times and the grill is pretty light weighted.

Like so:

A Kukko for your project... or maybe 6.

That early Bravada grille will be difficult to make work on your truck. You'll have to get a newer model grille.

Haha Kukko is a good way to keep you hydrated while working on the car

But isn't the fenders and the hood same in my S10 and Bravada? What grilles I would be able to fit as direct and what kind of modifications needed to make that early Bravada grill fit to my S10?

The link you put isn't working for me?

Started to disassemble the front suspension. Brakes are suprisingly good, just needs new pads and new gaskets to brake caliper pistons. Needs some painting etc but I think it will be just fine.

Does anyone have a photo what this bracket should look like? Didn't survive the disassembly

Re: S-10 from Finland

Haha cool this project is becoming international

Disassembled the front suspension further. Everything seems okay. If I wanted I could just throw new struts and brake pads and drive that thing but I think its better now just take a little longer, change better control arms, struts, brakepads, change new gaskets to wheel cylinders (I know you guys dont do that because new calipers are so cheap in US am I right?), paint some stuff so it will last again little longer...

So I haven't done nothing special lately, when it becomes to cars.

Over here, there are places that specialize in import parts. Around the Boston area, there was a company called Foreign Autopart.
They could get most anything for imports.
I don't know how it is in Finland, do they have specialty shops for US parts?

Re: S-10 from Finland

Had a change yesterday to mess with the truck a little. So a small update:

Took my leaf springs to a company, that overhauls them. They changed the center bolt, straps, all the little stuff, changed new bushings and lowered them by 3 inches. And I don't know what to call it but they "cold hammered" the springs for better handling. So these are basically good as new. They could paint them for that money

Now the front end is completely apart. Find out that I need to rust repair the front cab bracket from atleast passenger side...

Painted some little stuff, changed the thermostat to engine and made a new tank breather line to intake manifold because the old one was so rusted away And I did assebled the fuel sender unit to place. The old one was, guess what, ruined by rust

I guess I will have a small break from doing the car. Its going to be crazy cold in here (tomorrow I guess it will be up to minus -25 celsius), but I will update when I get a change to work on the car!

Re: S-10 from Finland

I think cold hammering is referring to the process they used to de-arch the leafs. Most places use presses to arch and de-arch leafs. I'm not sure if you took note or not but there is a front and rear to the leafs too.

Yes I meant that but didn't know how to say it

And yes I did noticed that and I have marked the front of the leafs I even marked which one is driver side and which is passenger. Just to be safe.

Re: S-10 from Finland

Are you going with tube upper and lower control arms, or stock?
I don't know if you have a lot of US vehicle breaker yards there, but it would be cool to grab a set of 98 to 04 Blazer front spindles with the big disc brakes. (unless you are going with drop spindles). Blazers also have the 1 1/8" sway bar.

Re: S-10 from Finland

Stock control arms will do for me.

I have been dreaming about 98-04 brake set for my cutlass for years. In Finland, theres NONE. Basically all (they were very few of them) 2nd genners are 4wd that came to Finland. For example, in biggest Finnish car marketing netsite, there is like a one 2nd genner for sale, no 1st onces at all. When I bought this truck there were two 1st genners for sale and none of the 2nd genners for sale.

These trucks really are rare here in Finland.

To other subject, does anyone know what thread is in the G-body front lower ball joint? Bought decent set of control arms of a G-body because they are not as rare as S10...

OT: Damn I was exhausted today, I watched the Superbowl yesterday, in Finland the game started like 01.30 AM and stopped like 5.30AM. I slept like 1 hour before I got to work /OT

Re: S-10 from Finland

It's really too bad that shipping is so expensive. I can send you all of that stuff easily. I have 3 sets of the dual piston front disc brake spindles - complete. They are pretty heavy though.
I am guessing that Asian cars are very popular there?

If you really are interested selling them to me, could you go ask for a price for shipping and PM me the price on the parts and shipping combined? I could use two set of them! One for S10 and one for Cutlass!

Re: S-10 from Finland

I'll see what it costs to ship to Finland. I am guessing either FedEx or UPS.
I have to weigh them since I bet they will want the exact shipping weight.

I buy them at the local Upull yards here, they are about $135 for a complete pair IIRC.
All you have to do is pop the 2 ball joints, the tie rod and the brake line. Most of the time the front stays aligned!

These are going on the Barbie Truck...

Re: S-10 from Finland

Cool!

I could even consider buying three complete sets, if some of my friends with g-bodys or s-10's would be interested. Of course, NOT to make money, but If the shipping is about the same for 2 and 3 sets, splitting the shipping with one of my friends would be good situation for both of us.

My co-worker was bored so I gave him passenger side front fender, do something with it, and he did! He does sheet metal work for living, so its nice that couple of the patches in the car are made by a pro

I'll see about a shipping quote. Do you have postal codes there? I'll probably need something like that.
I don't know if you care, but the drilled/slotted plated rotors with ceramic pads are about $100 on ebay. If I loaded them onto the assembly, it would save you more shipping.(if you were going to do that)
