Re: Project: Save Dad's Truck from the Scrap Heap
ahhhhh i see, hmm maybe some sort of foam? sticky foam or expanding come to mind. but the expanding could be a lot of work to shave it to were you want it. not sure if expanding foam would just work by itself?

Re: Project: Save Dad's Truck from the Scrap Heap
what about a welded ring on the rim itself that fits perfect inside the pvc. then you just have a couple of small allen head set screws to hold it in place.. not much work to store a small allen in a truck. Granted that you dont lose it

unless you got a body shop or machine shop or metal shop to roll it for you.. just some thin metal would work..

Re: Project: Save Dad's Truck from the Scrap Heap
I painted them. I wonder if the whole thing should be painted silver though. Still needs a Chevy emblem. In these pics, it's just held on with tape to see how it'll look. It looks like it'll work, once I figure out a way to attach them.

I'm going to paint the whole cap silver. I don't like the black tip on them. But I am going to refinish the wheels. I think I'm going to paint them dark gray, and polish the outer rim.

There's no point in having anything nice. It's just going to get stolen or destroyed. Thank God I hadn't painted it yet. I know this seems minor, but it still pisses me off and sets me back quite a bit.

If i were you i'd be looking at every red car in your complex until you find the one with black paint on it and make that asshole pay for it. Hit and run is not cool

Re: Project: Save Dad's Truck from the Scrap Heap
I haven't done anything to the truck. I made a trip up to ND for the first time since I brought the truck back. I put a new bumper on the Mazda. It'd had a crack and several scrapes for a few years (apparently in 2006, I lost all ability to back up, because I backed into stuff four times that year.) The paint was from automotivetouchup.com. It was an exact match.

Re: Project: Save Dad's Truck from the Scrap Heap
Not really any progress to report. I've been looking for a house, preferably one with a garage, so I'll actually have a place to work on the truck. Trying to do everything in an apartment complex parking lot is far from ideal. Unfortunately, there's almost nothing out there in Denver for less than $130k. I'll keep you all posted on how it goes.

Re: Project: Save Dad's Truck from the Scrap Heap
I know how you feel. My landlord in my apt complex freaks out if I do any work to my car during the day. So all my work it done at night -_- I'm anxious to see this project finished though kind of a funny story but my grandfather had a 1st gen s10 like yours. Well he was driving home one night and manage to roll the truck and it landed on some train tracks. Well I'm sure you can guess the rest. He went to get help and his truck wasn't there anymore but I've always wanted to get a 1st gen and do something to it in his name haha. I wish I could have got the truck but yehh it was 2 pieces it'd would make a nice project though!

Re: Project: Save Dad's Truck from the Scrap Heap
Well, as it turns out, any house in Denver for less than $300k is a one or two bedroom shack in the ghetto with a hole in the roof, raccoons in the attic, and a homeless dude living in the one-car garage. So, I'm looking at moving to another part of the country. Colorado's clearly trying to squeeze me out. You can only live here if you're among the richest of the rich.

No idea. The cost to live in North Dakota has skyrocketed, so I won't be going back there. Detroit, maybe? I've heard you can get a killer deal on a house there. Haha

I finally have a house under contract. It only has a one-car garage, but at least I'll have a decent place to work on the truck. I'll close on it in January. Hoping everything goes well in the meantime.

Those are the wrong ones. I tried one like that to see if it might work, and there was nowhere for it to clip onto. Thanks for trying though. I appreciate it.

Thanks guys.
I'm actually letting my nephew have the truck. I've got it to the point where it's running somewhat reliably and safe, so he'll take it from here. Sent from my iPhone using AutoGuide.com App |

I bought a house, finally. After the deal falling through four times, I finally closed about two weeks ago. I have a place to work on the truck now...so I'm thinking of holding onto it for a while longer.

Re: Project: Save Dad's Truck from the Scrap Heap
Sorry I haven't been on here much lately. I've been concentrating mostly on the house, so I haven't been able to do anything with the truck except drive it once in a while. It definitely was nice to have around for the move, and it turns out that it's actually not too bad in the snow, despite being RWD. Here are a couple of pics of the house:

Re: Project: Save Dad's Truck from the Scrap Heap
Since the idiot "hit and ran" on my passenger door, and it'll be easier to replace the door than to fix the dent, I'm thinking of going ahead and replacing both doors with ones from a Blazer with power windows and locks, and wiring it up. Does anyone know if this is as simple as wiring the door locks to a hot source and the windows to an ignition-switched source?

Re: Project: Save Dad's Truck from the Scrap Heap
Just read the whole thread. Pretty cool stuff man. If I'd been in CO when you were trying to get the truck moved I'd have volunteered to help. Glad to see you were able to get it.
I wish I had anything of my dad's but thankfully he's still with us. Last year he sold his really nice '87 bronco for $1300 without telling me first. Sure I already have a K5 but I totally would have bought it for that. As it is our family doesn't really have any heirlooms, though I am putting some of my grandpa's old tools to use on my cars. I know he'd like that. Anyway, keep at it! |

Re: Project: Save Dad's Truck from the Scrap Heap
Thanks, guys! I had kind of lost interest in the truck project for a while since I was putting all of my time and money into the house. I've still got a long way to go with the landscaping and painting and what-not with the house, but I have a place to work on the truck now, and I realized I'll always come back to it. I'm looking forward to getting the rusted fender and doors replaced. I realize that it'll realistically be another year, probably two before I can start on painting the truck though.
Sonomanclature, we'll have to figure out a time to meet up at the UPull in Aurora. I'm just a few miles down the street from there now. Let me know if you need any help with anything. Sent from AutoGuide.com App |
