Some very nice welding there, now get a new clear shield for the front of the welding helmet so you can see better.

LOL, the fender looks kind of funny sitting out there with the wheel under it and no truck around.

Re: Project: Metal Head

I hope you don't take this the wrong way and I know it is a little late now, but next time you do these, you should fit the top and bottom caps so that they sit right inside the two side plates like this

(full or half open corner)

It will be a ton less grinding than welding it the way you did.

You can get a nice bead in the corner then just round over or square up the edge. Very little grinding, less weld removed. (I usually prefer the slightly rounded over edges as opposed to the perfectly square)

The rails and whole project look awesome! Keep up the good work!

I looked at the pics and that was my first thoughts. You ground away the majority of your weld the way you did it, and made alot more work for yourself grinding.

Re: Project: Metal Head

Thanks for posting an actual pic Joel. That is much better example than the drawing I found!!!

But that is exactly how I would do it. You just kiss the edge with a grinder and you are done.

Re: Project: Metal Head

ok guys,

First of all thanks for the tips... I take everything to heart from all you guys (and gals). But let me explain myself so you understand why i did it this way.

First of all, the reason i didn't go full or half open corner is becasue of the way i had to bend the material around the plates. It would be very difficult (especially cause i work by myself) to keep a constant half open corner to weld to and remember I only had 3/16 wall thickness to weld to. This could cause serious warping with the thickness of the material being quite thin, and not building a jig to weld it (because its obviously one off). Furthermore, when i tack the pieces together i now have a straight square edge. Now you may ask, how you can you get full penitration? Well see once its all tacked together, straight, and they way i want it i now take my grinder with a coarse stone disc and grind out a 37 degree angle on both pices till the material is about 1/16 (.0625) away from right through. Now i have my welder set to burn a full penetration weld in the "V" style groove i made. Then what is left for me as a "weld cap" above the surface which is what i grind off. Now the cap still may take extensive grinding, BUT the weld is fully penitrated and allows me to have a square edge.....

So now i have a fully welded frame rail with perfectly straight, square edges. This makes it 100 times easier to create my own fillet around the rail and not have to depend on the radius the weld made doing the half or full open corner weld. I have done many half open or full open corner welds were i have ground it smooth to a nice radius on the "dependant weld" but found that i have had to go back and add "weld material" to the radius were the weld would be less than the radius i was going for.

So in my prospective, with the goal i am trying to achieve, my way may take a little bit longer but in the end it makes it a hell of alot easier for my to grind my own radius and keep it square and uniform without having to touch up spots.

Wow that was long. ha hopfully you guys understand what im saying. Haha if not i made a drawing for you guys to understand better how i weld it.

Again thanks for your comments and concerns!!!!

Re: Project: Metal Head

ha i have to explain this everytime. It is a good idea but im goin to make it better. Its for if it ever gets stuck down you can put a reciver in and use that to jack it up to be able to get it off the ground. Where it sits the reciever will come out the front air dam so you don't have to remove the bumper. Ill just have to make a qucik disconnect grille for the air dam so you can get at it. When i redo it i will be making my own that isn't crappy or bought off a shelf and welded in.

that's ingeniously smart, i always had to use a 4x4 piece of wood and 2 jacks..

If your referring to the angle, its impossible with a doored truck. Even stockfloored. its prob only like 2 inches max.
