Re: Project: Metal Head

Hey,
So ive been designing a cantilever rear clip on my computer over the last couple days to get an idea of what im doing and how (saves the trial and error i would have to go through). So this is what im thinking. I know that it will work on the computer, but what are the advantages...disadvantages etc.....??? I basicly designed it hoping it would be a nice ride. Oh and the wheels are 22's with 30 wall tires...What do u think....................... thanks

And the suspension lifted

Re: Project: Metal Head

Wouldn't you need some kind of Panhard bar to keep the rearend from moving side to side? I would try to incorporate that in you computer rendering also to see how it would work with it.

that frame is coming out nicely, sweet welds.

did you have the frame measured before you started?

Re: Project: Metal Head

pan hard bar connects the links together from side to side so that the rear end can;t sway or slid from side to side. Its hard to explain without a drawing

Quote:

No the frame was near impossible because it was out of square and not right to begin with. I am basicly building it all from what measurements i could take. and making the rest.

Re: Project: Metal Head

You should do a watts linkage instead of a panhard bar... just my opinion, i love watts linkages, im definitley doing that on my next project... which will start whenever i get off my lazy ass and finish the one at hand...lol

Re: Project: Metal Head

defenitely watts link

and i'd change the mounting point where the lift lever meetsl the upper link bar. 2 tabs on top of each link bar and a link end on the lever bar would be easier and cleaner looking.

Haha ya i am thats just the waterjet pieces. What i am doing after is using 2 x 3/16 flatbar to box it all in.

Question.
Where can i find a good example of a watts link....

Sorry its not really clear but that is the way its going to be lol. I jsut have a hole on the top bars becasue in the program they bars are all the same. The hole is just for reference.

Check out the BBT Fab thread in the bodydroping it section. There is a good one somewhere in there if the pics still work. Its lazer cut so it looks sweet.

What program were you using to draw the setup? Looks nice, i am familiar with Autocad and invetor and am just starting to learn ProE this year!

Can you tell your pinion change through the motion? Cause i am drawing mine up in Inventor and i was wondering if i could cycle the suspension though its motion and figure out my pinion change.

Thanks Man,
Ya im using Solidworks 3d. Its very similar to intentor. I have used inventor as well. What i found for the pinion angle is i set my axel in the program parallel to the transmission (or related angle) and then delete the mate. This now allows me to build my links to the axel and not have a mate holding it in place. Then it has a free motion that you can move with the mouse. This also now makes it able to be measured for pinion angle when the axel is up, down, or half way. This might be kinda confusing but im trying. Let me know if this helps.

Other than that i have now drawn in a mock up of what im going to use. THanks to all the comments i am now going to use a custom made watts link instead of a panhard bar. Also changed the cantilever arms. Let me know if anything seems out of wack. Thanks

Re: Project: Metal Head

I don't know much about this but it looks like the cantilevers may make contact with the bags during motion.

they shouldnt rub because when the bag is completley deflated it has its largest diameter. so there for it should clear.

Yes your right. I redesigned a couple parts now that I know they work.

Looks damn near identical with the setup we did a while back...I like it lol. If you do decide to run your bags like that there are a couple things you should keep in consideration!!

6.25 in. I have to cut the floor and redo it anyways becuase like the rest of the shit the floor looks like poo. I factored in that I would rather my drive shaft at 0 degrees so my pinion angle will be less up and down, especially because its going to be running 22's.

Re: Project: Metal Head

nice job choosing the watts link, but my only concern with that wicked frame is the back end where those plates hang way down to come in contact with the ground.

1. are those goin to stick below the bed? and 2. when you go on an incline without being fully aired are those going to rub the ground?

The plates hanging down are actually going to be 1" off the ground when layed out. Then on the bottom of that im going to mount my drag blocks. The blocks when mounted will be ground level when layed out. I don;t think i will hit the groud with them on an incline becasue a) i wont be driving it up major inclines and b) if i do its 6" in the air when its at ride height. So i feel in my personal opinion that i wont have a problem. Good questions though man.

Im gona put mine behing the axle so you can layout flat and then you can drop the ass end and ride cali and get the drag blocks instead of the frame.
