Re: [Project] Living up to my username
I was going to wait till it got painted to show pics, but i decided im putting of painting it until i get all my fiberglass projects done and do it all at the same time. So here is the center console I built throughtout the first half of September:
Began with tapping up the floor: ![]() Then a second layer: ![]() Then came fiberglass matte, 3-4 layers depending upon the area ![]() hardened and removed from the truck: ![]() Tripped to desired foot print: ![]() Then to start mounting stuff off of I wanted a material I was more comfortable working with, so I cut a piece of 1/2" MDF and made it go the length of the console. I just screwed this in into the fiberglass piece ![]() Then using more 1/2"MDF, some 2" PVC pipe, and a universal underdash mount headunit kit I got my general shape ![]() Here you can really see how the fiberglass mold of the floor will truely fit like a glove versus if I had just used a flat piece of wood for the base of the console: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Then I used speaker grill cloth to wrap the console, then resin that up. (not pic) |

Re: [Project] Living up to my username
Then I began the actual fiberglassing. I used fiberglass cloth for this that I cut into multiple sized strips
![]() ![]() ![]() flipped over ![]() ![]() then ill skip over the multiple layers that followed since it all looks the same lol ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Then I used marglass to begin smoothing things out, cut out the holes for the gauges, and for the top part where a fuse box will then go into. The wooden piece will be treated with some foam padding then be wrapped in leather of vinyl of some sort: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() with switches put in now (7 holes but only physically had 4 in for this picture) ![]() ![]() |

Re: [Project] Living up to my username
Then i decided to do a test fit, and I am really really happy with the way it fits and flows with everything.
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Then i decided, i really like it so much that im going to put the gauges in it, and roll around with it until I get it painted. which will be sometime this winter ![]() I allready talked with John at Getbored for some tips/pointers/suggestions for what I can do to improve upon my work to make it as good as can be as well as prepped best to give it to him in a form for him to take over and finish the smoothing/sanding/bondo before he paints it. SO PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, LETS NOT TURN THIS INTO A FIBERGLASSING TECHNIQUE DISCUSSION THREAD. This is the way i did it, it turned out just fine. This is not meant to be a teching aid for anyone, so dont hold me responsible for you trying to do something and saying I tought you wrong. If you wanna learn how to do fiberglass then read NickZagaitas (sp?) how to thread. Last edited by xtucking22s : 10-04-2008 at 11:34 AM. |

Re: [Project] Living up to my username
Now I have also been working on an overhead console. Driving around in my sierra one day I thought to myself it would be cool looking to put this overhead console into the s-10 and throw 2 of my gauges in there. (my old center console had 6 gauges, so i needed to find a home for all of them. except im not putting my ammeter back in currently, or if i do it will be next to the battery rack whenever i get to doing that). Anyways, i knew that for the diesel guys they make a gauge mount for this overhead console. so ya...things worked out well. now pics on that:
this is my sierra's in the sierra: ![]() then I very roughly test fitted it in the s-10. It looks right at home! well with a little help it will ![]() ![]() Now unfortunatly the factory map lights wont work because it is very bulky on the backside of the overhead console, it isnt flush with the mounted surface. See the tabs on the overhead console that make it fit into the sierra? ya i needed to cut those off to put this thing in the s10 so that it sits flush on the headliner. The headliner of my sierra is like cutout underneath the overhead console so it uses those tabs. anyways, ya, so the stock lights wouldnt work, so I needed to find somethign different. So I found these cool high output 1Watt LED flood lights from oznium. decided i would make them work. these things are bright! And yes...they are blue....yes im bringing back a little bit of blue-ness lighting love to the truck, but leaving it plain and simple. ![]() ![]() gauge mount I bought from So Cal Diesel and my 2 voltmeters (one for starter battery, one for main batteries) ![]() Oh, and I bought another overhead console off ebay for $20. so i didnt actually hack up my sierra's lol, I put my sierra's overheadconsole back in after the initial test fit the first night. Now after removing the factory map lights, i was left with a ~2" hole, well the LED lights are only like 1-1/8", so I cut a piece of plastic with the correct 1-1/8" hole and like a 2-1/2" outerdiameter and plastic welded it to the overhead console ![]() Then molded that new piece of plastic in and smoothed it out to make it all blend in and look "right" ![]() ![]() ![]() This still needs some work as well, but thats where it stands now. I have sanded this thing a lot to remove all the factory texture. |

Re: [Project] Living up to my username
Awesome work man! I wish that I had the time, patience, and experience to build custom one-off fiberglass pieces. I tried my hand at it once and ended up very, very disappointed in myself. I'll try it again someday... maybe when I get a set of bucket seats for my ride.

they use em alot in old cars with the AM knob radios so that you can put an aftermarket in the car without hackin up the sweet dashboards.. Last edited by PunkDime99 : 10-04-2008 at 02:40 PM. |

Re: [Project] Living up to my username
Thanks a lot guys, I appreciate the compliments as always. Ill be getting started on my next thing very soon. which is a 10.4" touchscreen fiberglassed into the main dash bezel like orangesonoma and purplepassion have done. Ill get on that starting next week I imagine and Ill do the same thing I did here, post pics once I get it to the point that I give up and wait it out till i get Getbored to finish of the smoothing of it and paint it.

Re: [Project] Living up to my username
I really like the consoles especially the top one. I had the same idea a couple of years ago. I used to have a tripple gauge pod and cut all of them off. I used a piece of 1/4" plexiglass and molded the gauge pods to that. It was not thick enough to cover up the back side so I used aother 1/4" piece and mounted it above my rear view mirror. I will have to get pics but it came out well. Your truck will look real nice at night with all the gauges lit up.

Re: [Project] Living up to my username
Center console looks good, two quick questions- is this your first fiberglass job? and does the new console get mounted to the floor like the stock one, or does it just rest there? thanks and keep up the great work
