Not bad at all. Seams like you're putting some good thought into this thing. Welds on the notch came out great.

Bust out a angle grinder and flap disk and grind those welds on the top cap of the notch smooth. Strength in the notch is from the side and bottom pieces, not the top filler piece. Go ahead and nail it while you can.

its partially because I moved it back 1 or 1 1/4" and also because nothing is ever perfect haha. But we wanted the notch level, that was the main priority so thats what we were going off of. that bottom piece will get trimmed off tonight

...lol, not the truck the nice shiny powdercoated stuff from SD. Wrap it up with something, tape, anything, so you don't scratch it.

I posted my consern a while back, you probably missed it, no worries, i'm only clownin'. I just don't want to see it gettin scratched on you. I have done it before, by mistake by dropping a wrench, or something stupid like that.

Keep up the good fight!

i think he meant taping up all your link bars til the time of completion. so you don't accidently scratch them putting everything back on.

did you ever put a crossmember in after this pic so the bag plates wont push up and eventually break? Im not trying to start anything but I had the same problem.

Re: [Project] Living up to my username

ya, that was just a pic from when I was mocking up the bag plates, the notch wasn't even welded up fully then.

This was a pic from when I started priming everything...it's a SD bridge kit, I had to put it in like that or the dif cover bracket would hit the crossmember when it layed out...thx for looking out though...that's why I like this forum.

Re: [Project] Living up to my username

allright, unfortunatly the tank of gas ran out in the middle of welding stuff....so we are delayed again until thursday night. The next two days eric and myself are both busy and he needs to get a refill on his tank, so ya...Thursday night we should be finally done with this welding. so here are abunch of pics....the more pics i post the more work it looks like we actually got done lol, but in reality we worked 2 hours....and then ran out of gas
frame finally cut

proud owner right there...hackin away at the frame

the bottom piece was crazy wider then the top piece, i dont really understand why this is done, and I think it looks like shit when the pieces make a little hat to the notch, eric felt the same way so he trimmed it down to make this notch look real good and strong

I used a flap disk wheel on my grinder and cleaned up the welds a little. Eric warned me not to do to much cuz then your grinding away the strenght of the weld, so i only did what was needed to smooth it out

I put a "pull string" in the notches so i can later run whatever i want threw the notches. Its just some 16 gauge wire, i used this because i figured when welding in the last piece of the notch it wouldnt melt like actual string would, i figured the red jacket would melt and i would still have the copper conductor to pull but somehow the insulating didnt melt, i was suprised

I trimmed down the shock bar, cut off 2.5" on each end to make it fit between the notches. We thought about drilling a hole in the notch and sticking it in there then welding it up but since its only a shock bar we felt it would be plenty strong just welded to the outsides of the notches. if it was a BOA setup we might have done it the other way, but this is fine. so ya this is what was cut off

Re: [Project] Living up to my username

They have those bottom caps wider so that you can do a vertical up fillet weld on them. It's an easier weld then doing the vertical-up/overhead weld like you have there. As long as the welder is skilled, they will work either way. It does look cleaner with them trimmed flush.

Also hang onto one those pieces of tubing you cut off, they are excellant for pressing out the superpivots if you would ever need to.

Re: [Project] Living up to my username

yea the notches def aren't goin anywhere. i really don't like the 8 piece step notches that much as it is, and it looks even worse when nothing is trimmed. i don't love welding overhead but i can do it and this is gonna be a show truck (so adam tells me, haha) so i'm tryin to do it as clean as i can.

gonna be a show truck? excuse me? lol, it has been a show truck...for about 2 years now...i dont have all the goofy shit like 8 tvs in there for my practical cinematic viewing pleasure.

And the notch is turning out very very pretty. just as good as the best work ive ever seen done with these 8 piece notches.

haha eric picture whoring lol, its cool. and hey man ill smooth them welds down perfectly smooth if ya let me...u said not to do it too much...but hey i got no problem smoothing em out some more. I remember seeing that truck u did a while back on ur site(when u had a website)

And no....u dont need to work on your daily driver, your fine without a single working driveable car of your own lol. (the point of a daily driver is to drive it and leave it stock eric....not be working on both your cars at the same time haha)

Re: [Project] Living up to my username

lookin real good adam. nice progress.

ps- good idea putting the pull through wire in the notch to run your taillight wires and stuff. takes a real EE to come up with good ideas like that (not melting the conductor, haha)
