Re: Project Girl with Wrenches

As far as the paint questions go. I have no personal issue with single stage but I don't recomend it in metallic. To make metallic lay out without a tiger stripe effect you reduce gun pressure and pull the gun back a bit to do what is called a drop coat or finesse coat. This just evens out the colour and metallics. With single stage doing the drop coat would make for a rough texture to the paint. But I painted the front clip of my truck in single stage last year. I liked it to be honest. Much more durable, didn't chip as easily.

As far as bare metal yes an etch primer or epoxy primer for bare metal should always be topped with a sealer or high build primer of some kind. I myself don't bother with a third step of sealing. When I'm blocking and sanding my primer I only reprime if I break through to metal or bondo. But if I break through to paint I don't bother. We use a rule of thumb of bare metal etch primer should be used on any spot bigger then 4 square inches. If it was just say an edge of a panel showing bare metal I just use primer on it.

I'm going to check out a local uphostery shop that's supposed to be a katskinz dealer and see what their pricing is like.

Got a fair bit done on the truck tonight. Went to the Stampede yesterday so I didn't work on it but tonight I go most of the cab sanded. Just have to catch my edges and bodylines and it's ready to be masked and painted
I'm going to yank the hood off and polysurface and block it. Fiberglass is so wavy it drives me nuts. Tomorrow I'm going to start sectioning my bumpers to make my ultra custom bumper. I hate fabrication, I suck at it. I think the bumper will be super frustrating. I have to make the end caps off the 98+ bumper slimmer to fit up with the 97 rebar bumper. I'm taking about a 3/4" strip out of the middle of them to try to make that work. Then I have to make it fit on the truck. Not looking forward to it. No luck yet on a new gate. Might be a weekend project.

The truck is scheduled to be in it's first car show on the 28th. Has to be mostly done by then lol.

Re: Project Girl with Wrenches

I used to install Katzkin and Classic Soft Trim. I don't know about these days, but back then Katzkin was a lower grade leather that wore, wrinkled, and cracked much more easily than CST. When a new car buyer wanted a car off the lot, but with leather, CST is what they got because it was the same or almost the same feel and quality as factory leather.

I am not a painter by no means, but here goes:
1. There's a write up on here stating not to do it unless it's a pos and you're going to sell it (or something along those lines).
2. We have a Kubota tractor that we redone with single stage. It came out looking like brand new. A couple years later the paint turned flat orange and now looks exactly the way it did to begin with minus the few rust spots it had.
3. I've used metallic single stage (after I was talked into buying it) and it's a bitch to spray and make look right, then you go back to it looking like crap soon down the road.

Now with the tractor, I thought it was possibly a bad mix of paint or something until I read that post on here which detailed my experience word for word.

I took the rest of the single stage metallic to my painter and asked him to use it since I figured he'd do a much better job. He wouldn't touch it and says he never uses it. He said pretty much the same thing, if you want a quality job that will last (which I did) then go with base coat/clear coat.

Do it right. Just my two cents.

Yea a anything but spray bomb primer lol. A polyester primer is nice to work with. Sands like baby powder.

You're right. All paints of similar application methods are obviously of the same quality as well. The price difference is in the name only. /sarcasm

Buy cheap paint, expect to get bad results in one form or another, be that how it lays down, how many coats it takes to cover, or durability of the finish. A QUALITY single stage will hold a shine for many years, but requires periodic maintenance of which I'm sure the kubota did not receive.

I've seen BC/CC systems that stay shiny but peel off in sheets or chip from every little stone. Cheap paint is cheap for a reason.

Yeah the Kubota was washed every now and then and taken care of. It had more than one coat though. I still don't see why someone wouldn't want to just do bass coat/clear coat. How many show trucks run single stage?

Mine was going to be a single stage show truck lol. Harder to scratch, easier to polish. You want quality single stage that will last forever and NEVER fade. John Deere tractor paint, that stuff is amazing!

Re: Project Girl with Wrenches

I was just talking to a painter friend a few weeks ago about this. He said, for a black or dark solid color, go with single stage paint as the clear will bring out any surface imperfections. If it's a metallic or you want to cover the edges (like pin striping or a color change line) then you will want to use BC/CC. Although you can get different answers by talking to different painters.

Just my $.02 worth.

Re: Project Girl with Wrenches

Yea I would never use metallic single stage. Single stage is definately a really good choice engines though.

Like DJ said you can ask 10 painters and get 10 completely different opinions on paint. It's all in preference, application and care. Single stage LOOOOVES wax. Wax really helps to prevent oxidization. Single stage in red is extremely prone to oxidizing. Red is another colour I would personally avoid with single stage. But colours like black, blue, white and most of those old muscle car colours work fine in single stage. Only reason I'm not going with single stage now is because it's getting painted at work and my boss is paying for base clear. Now I have 5 gallons of 8555 single stage lol. I may end up using it on chassis parts and painting the rear end when I get time.

so can metallic single stage be shot on and look nice or is it just the difficult factor of getting it to look good?

Re: Project Girl with Wrenches

Metallic just doesn't work it goes stripey and blotchy looking. It tends to end up looking spray bombed. It takes a seriously skilled painter to make the metallics lay out properly. You could get away with the radar blue but I highly advise against SS silver.

They likely don't even make a single stage in that WRX blue because of the pearl tone in it. But I could be wrong.

Re: Project Girl with Wrenches

I present to you. UPDATES! YAY!

Got another tailgate from the wreckers after the reman'd gate catastrophe. So it's been shaved already and awaits primer tomorrow. I'm working on the hood as well trying to get it as straight as possible for fiberglass. The bumper will stay stock for the time being. I have all the parts to make my custom bumper and I've started cutting but I want this thing in the local show n shine this weekend so I'm just going to put the old bumper on for now. Grille mirrors and valance are in the spray booth waiting to be painted in the morning. Yay progress! Box will go back on tomorrow after I undercoat it. Windows hopefully will go back in and doors put back together so I can start cleaning the horrendous dirty interior. Noticed my dash is looking a little worse for wear. It's stained yellow and no matter what I use on it I can't get it to come clean. Not sure what I'm going to do about that.

haha yup and while working on it you you see more that you want to do or need to do. The glass guy cut my headliner when he took my front and rear glass out so I need to redo my suede headliner as well. I also have an alarm system to install that's been sitting in the garage forever. And with driveshaft angle alignment kit from JTR I still have a nasty vibration so I also need to figure that out. Then seat upholstrey. And sub box build. And.... ugh it will never end. Then there's the v8 sitting in the garage needing a rebuild lol.

I know I'm sooo broke though. Literally a week after signing the dotted line for the dodge. Work got stupid slow. I've gone to work for free for the last 2 days now. SUCKS!! Time for an evening job at walmart just to be able to buy groceries. So new phone with good camera isn't in the near future. My phone is so f'ed. Has a lot of reception issues now too. Note to self don't run over phone EVER AGAIN.

Great update, for your dash try some simple green or even some mean green but you have to be careful because mean grean can take any type of coating right off of plastic parts.

Single stage is FINE. It has its place. My 72 chevy is original single stage paint and it still polishes up.

You just cant expect single to look like a brand new corvette. Clear adds depth.

Good to know! Thanks Justin! I can't wait to get working on mine. Started to notice the 4.3 sounds pretty tired on startup. Hopefully have the motor rebuilt and ready to be dropped in next spring. How's the power feel on the blazer with the new motor?

Re: Project Girl with Wrenches

Shitty lol. But that's cause I welded up the exhaust real quick so it wouldn't be so loud in the garage and I have a bad leak causing the o2's to not read right and run the system rich. Then I need a crank relearn and a camshaft retard done. Getting 11mpg lol. Gonna get all of the above fixed Monday though.
