Project: from wrecked to stockfloored

So you guys have prolly seen all the bad luck with my truck. First i totalled the front end and came back with a sonoma front end. Then i got rear ended and the bed got smashed and my backhalf is cracked and tweaked. After a bunch of bullshit and thanks to the dudes insurance that hit me, i finally got the checks in mail. So now im comin back with a sfbd from the second accident.

Cliff notes:Insurance checks = stock floor body drop

The work will begin tmrw and it will be DONE by the end of the month because I'm going to drive to the Forbidden Fantasy show out here in SoCal. I will most likely post updates every couple days since well be workin on it everyday. Ill have pics of the tear down tmrw. Oh yeah its gonna set up to lay body on 20s even though ill be running 18's on it for now.

Heres a couple pics of how it looks right now

Make sure you do it right though bro! Its a lot of work to do a SF...and from the look of how much steel tubing you bought...your redoing the entire frame which is something you definatly dont wanna rush! Good luck to you bro! Please keep posting picts of your progress!

chase: yeah its a bummer. i guess ill see you next meet then man. hopefully with ur new truck

Re: Project: from wrecked to stockfloored

You building an entire frame from the firewall back or just laying in the 2x3 inside the stock frame?

Yes u can...most people do it this way so it goes much faster then building an entire custom frame. When building an entire frame you have to make a TON of measurements and make sure everything is level and straight.

Re: Project: from wrecked to stockfloored

BTW...even with a full frame build you will have to cut the floor out right near the floor board to the firewall. The area right there is very tight and has to be reworked.

most stockfloors that i have ever seen done are always done with a whole new frame from the firewall. i still dont see how you can keep the stockfloor if ur gonna use original frame, cuz it seems like the original frame is too tall. got pics of this? im not tryin to say ur wrong or anythin ive just never seen that done before.

Ive bagged a few trucks and backhalfed my truck but im brand new to the stockflooring so any tips and advice will be very helpful

yeah i kno im gonna have to rework some of the floor and cut n tub for the tranny and driveshaft.

exhaust question: whats the best way to run the exhaust with the stockfloor? since im usin 2x3s im gonna have 3inches of clearence for exhaust. anyone got pics of how they ran theres?

Re: Project: from wrecked to stockfloored

all you have to do is cut your frame on the inside, opening up your rails under the cab, where its "boxed". then place your 2x3 inside there, weld it. have it layin on the frame rail. weld it in. cut out the upper portion of your rail, move cab mounts down, cut around your tranny tunnel, and lay the cab down. if you dont work the transition right in the front below the firewall, you have to rework alot of your floor. umm...tryin the think...check out some member projects, alot of people have done it.

Re: Project: from wrecked to stockfloored

look through my project thread man.

i laid the 2x3 inside my stock frame, welded it in, then cut off the top 2" of the stock frame.

This will save you tons of time and measuring.

Re: Project: from wrecked to stockfloored

wow thanks a lot guys. thats gonna very useful. im gonna talk to my buddy tmrw that has done sfbd before and tell him if hes interested in doin this because it will save us a lot of time.

the only problem i see with this is that when i got rear ended my backhalf bent pretty badly so there could be a chance that the part of the frame under the cab was effected to. well kno hopefully tmrw if not monday for sure when we pull the cab off. ill keep you guys posted as soon as i get the cab off ill post some pics.

thank you once again for explanin this to me. sure will come in handy

are there anymore pros and cons with usin the original frame or doin just the 2x3 from the firewall back?

Re: Project: from wrecked to stockfloored

if you got rearended it's very unlikely that your frame under the cab is tweaked unless you were hit super hard.

there are alot of crossmembers between the rear bumper and cab to take the beating.

I personally would lay the 2x3 inside the old frame man. you don't have to have a frame table, and don't have to measure a thousand times to square up a new frame with the old front clip. just trim the old frame guts out, sit the tubing in, weld it, then cut off the excess.

Re: Project: from wrecked to stockfloored

I'm curious to see what Jon thinks about doing the bd this way. From what I know of him, he's not one that takes a quick route but rather a more unique, custom and professional approach. I'm not saying the other way is unprofessional, Jon just seems like the guy that wants everything to be custom and that makes you think 'Damn, thats some quality work right there!'

Re: Project: from wrecked to stockfloored

thanks.

IMO though, just do the section under the cab like I did mine, it will save you alot of time and work on the area of the truck you'll rarely see and that will get beat up anyways when you drag, lay out, or just sit in traffic with it an inch away from the pavement.

you can always do the back half completely custom anyways even if you do under the cab like i did mine.

Yeah looks good. Make sure you get strong penetration in the welds when you connect the tubbing together. Wouldn't want it cracking or worse, fall appart down the road. Keep er comin man!
