Re: Project: Evasive Motivation

Ohh okay I know what one it is now. Its a shame it doesnt lay frame. Theres also another one in the city here.. its green or something. I havent seen it personally but the guy that owns it was at my place the other day with a buddy picking up some stuff I was selling.

Also, it looks like I may be getting the retro dash in this summer after all. Might be shipping the truck out to Brennan (ravenmachine) to get it fitted and everything for me since I just dont got the time. Just waiting for my eelay to come in from airlift before we set a date!

Re: Project: Evasive Motivation

So a slight change of plans occurred today. Rather than putting in a dash from a 55 ford fairline/buick niagra, I found a different complete dash in my area for $50. Steal of a deal! Its getting sent by greyhound today or tomorrow and should be here monday. I was going to toss up some pics, but the seller took down the ad already.

What's the new dash out of? And what are you doing with the one you were going to put in?

Re: Project: Evasive Motivation

So, anyone have any idea how to convert the digital signal to work with a mechanical gauge? Really wanting to keep the old school gauge, but the only thing i've found that might work.. is $300. Which is retarded, considering if I wanted to go the other way (i.e. analog signal to digital output) it's $30.

Re: Project: Evasive Motivation

Throw up a pic of the old dash and where its cut in half, please and thank you. I might be interested if you would want to sell it. If its the one on the first page, it might be pretty cool in my truck.

Finally took her for a spin last night with a buddy of mine. Man, after hardly moving for the last couple months the brakes squeeked like a mofo. once the bit of rust wore off on them it was all good. But I need an alignment in a bad way!

Thread needs a slight update. Got an alignment done on it almost a month ago now and I've been driving it a fair bit. still need to drive it more though for the money i have into it

couple pics from this last weekend after a 2.5hr drive to the lake.. she was clean but the gravel roads at the lake made her a mess again.

Re: Project: Evasive Motivation

I'm still searching for a front bumper cover from a gmc, but everything around here has been beat to shit so ive had no luck whatsoever. For the most part I'm going to drive her as is for the summer and then tear into her again this winter. Unless I find a bumper cover for the front, then the xtreme stuff will be torn off ASAP. Also, I'm about to begin on the next part of my project. Decided I'm going to do an engine swap to a 5.3. Budget is $2500 - 3000 before shipping, taxes etc. Heres what I plan to do as of right now. Might change ten minutes from now, but meh

5.3 engine w/ truck accessories & intake
cpw harness, engine mounts & 1 5/8 headers
ls2/3 oil pan
stock 4.3 4l60e trans right now with a hughes flexplate spacer
stock 4.3 radiator recessed into core support with JY fans most likely from an intrepid

I'll also be notching the frame for the a/c compressor which ill convert to an air compressor for the bags.. after i wasted money on getting a york haha. I also still need to figure out what exactly i'll be doing for fuel as well as a tranny cooler. I'm hoping I can make my current external fuel pump work with the 5.3, i think i can but i need to look into it more. As far as power upgrades go, I wont be doing much for now. Mainly sticking with the stock 5.3 until I figure out exactly what direction I want to go.

Re: Project: Evasive Motivation

Small update. Placed an order for the CPW poly mounts & 1 5/8 headers. CPW needs to update their shipping calculator though, was quoted at $300 to get it to my door. So instead i got it shipped to the border.. for $35. Also placed an order to summit for the hughes adapter.

As far as the block goes, should be picking one up in about 2 weeks or so from a local junkyard for ~$500. Once that happens I'll spend some time cleaning and painting the block and the stuff that comes with it to make it purdy before she gets dropped in.

Thanks. And nah, I wish it was mine, it's the parents.

Also, just purchased the LS2 corvette oil pan kit from southern performance. Just need the actual block now, and the harness as well as some efans. I'll still need the small things such as hoses and lines etc, but I'm working at the bigger stuff first to get it out of the way.

Re: Project: Evasive Motivation

Small update for you guys. Picking up a 5.3 on saturday from a guy about an hour from me for 650 with all the accessories, so long as i pull it. So as long as i can round up a few guys I'll be getting that saturday and I can finally start to tear into it.

Also, I got my trans spacer in as well s my cpw motor mounts and sanderson headers. Wasnt even expecting them in yet it was a nice surprise when I got home! Didnt bother taking pics though since we've all seen them 15x before. I'll try to get some photos up this weekend.

Where did you pick the motor up from? I was just going to swap in a carbed 350 but have been throwing around the idea of 5.3 lately for better reliability and likely fuel economy.

M & S Salvage in caronport sk. Evan is the guy that runs it, and it is hands down one of the best yards I have been to. Great prices, and he'll help you out with whatever you need. He also has import, domestic, old and new so its just awesome haha.

Anyways, I picked up an engine on saturday out of a 99-02 pickup. Not sure exactly on the year, but the engine bay was SPOTLESS. I was amazed at how clean it was. Especially for being in the middle of a JY. I need to remove the heads to be sure its a 5.3 yet, but regardless if its a 4.8 I wont be to disappointed. Heres a few pics for you guys

I've also got the engine cover for it as well sitting in the cab of the truck yet. Once I figure out if its a 4.8 or a 5.3 I'll decide whether I want to basically drop it in or if I want to build it up a bit first.

LOL, Caron port, to funny, I spent about 7 years of my life there. Played in the hangar quite a bit too. Brings back old memories. If I am out that way, I'll have to stop there. I have lots of relatives in Speedy Creek.

Re: Project: Evasive Motivation

I honestly have never heard of speedy creek.. which is odd considering I used to work at purolator. Think i'd of heard of it at least once!

Anyways, got the headers, plugs, and pan off last night. Still need to pull the windage tray and pickup tube to determine what engine it is i've got. I also found a few metal pieces in the pan that I wasnt excited to see at all. Now I need to figure out where they came from.

Re: Project: Evasive Motivation

All right guys, I need some opinions. I'm debating whether or not to do a full rebuild on this engine. On the one hand, it makes most sense to put a freshened up engine in the truck rather than a tired out one. That way its life is greatly expanded.

But on the other hand, if I'm tearing it all apart I feel that I might as well make it worth while and add some power to the engine while its all torn apart. But that would greatly extend the time frame to get this in the truck, as well as the budget.

Lastly, I'm highly considering going FI shortly down the road since its so easy to gain power through a good turbo. If I do plan to go that route, I need to keep it in mind if I were to build up the engine so that a turbo will go well with it.

So does anyone have any helpful advice? Since I hope to go FI should I just rebuild the engine and then add in FI, or should I build it up a bit and then turbo it slightly later with a larger power gain?

Re: Project: Evasive Motivation

So I'm unsure of what to make of this. I found a few metal shavings/pieces after pulling the pan.

Heres the pickup tube:

And the pan, not sure how well this photo is going to turn out:

Searching the forums a bit here, sometimes small pieces are common, and to be expected. Im concerned though that these pieces are a bit larger than average and a sign of a needed rebuild. Honestly, this is my first go at building an engine and am not 100% sure of what is appropriate in this situation. I've gathered all my knowledge from heavy researching.

Anyone have any go forward suggestions? Does this call for further tear down, or should it be fine as is? These few pieces in the pickup tube were the only larger sized pieces of metal I found.

Not much of an update, but i got my non xtreme shavers in. Now I just need to find time to pull all the xtreme garbage. I'll upload a photo in a few minutes for you guys, apparently my phone didnt auto upload it.

Other than that I've just been deconstructing the engine and scraping away all the dirt and grime on the block. Hoping to paint it soon, but I'm debating whether or not I'll get the cylinders bored or not.

Re: Project: Evasive Motivation

Sorry dude, I traded the xtreme shavers for non x ones!

Had a long weekend and decided to take a break from doing work on the truck. This week I'll be calling around though to see who will hone the cylinders on the 5.3 for a good price. Then I just need to install the cam, vette oil pan, and reassemble & paint the block and components. Still a bit of a ways away, but it'll get done! I've also decided what my next project will be once the engine swap is done in the truck haha

Re: Project: Evasive Motivation

Holy shit, havent been on here in a while. Surprised to see my thread near the top! As of an update, theres not much to say really. truck has been parked since the last time I posted basically, and its 2 hours away from me at the farm. So not much can be done haha.

As for the engine, its torn down completely and I actually ordered a rebuild kit for it as well as a rad, shroud, and electric fan like two days ago so theres a slight amount of progress. Still need it assembled, as well as a harness but thats it. Then she can go in!

Speaking to the cab, I'm still looking for one. However, I'll have a garage to myself soon so I can completely tear down the truck and really get into it. I have a lot planned for the truck, its just a matter of finding the parts I need.

Also, I'm in the middle of starting a company up with a good buddy of mine. Were gunna be powder coating and such, so this engine is going to look great! Once I get the cab I can really get moving on the project as a whole. Until then I'm somewhat stuck, as its the central piece to my plans.
