[PROJECT]: Envoy Conversion w/ HID

Well due to the server crash, my whole Envoy Conversion thread was wiped out! My conversion is more or less done, all of the pieces have been collected. All that it needs is some paint and final assembly.

My thanks go out to:

- s10cyncrvr for all the much needed wiring information and diagram
- layinbody31 for the hook up on the much needed GMC parts
- samandjen1 for the Envoy Conversion How To thread and for the Chrome bumper strips
- eBay for the sweet ass deal I found on three complete Envoy headlights with all the HID components

Also, a huge thanks goes out to all the members that posted comments, criticism, questions, and suggestions in the original thread! And thanks to all of those who purchased pieces of the old front end to help fund the new one!

And now on to the pics!!

Here's what it looked like at the start of this project.

Disassembly Began!

I installed the lights and then tested them.

Re: [PROJECT]: Envoy Conversion w/ HID

Had these brackets that came with the ballasts. At first I didn't know where they went, then yell02sonoma emailed me a diagram showing the placement of all the Envoy headlight pieces.

Once that was figured out, I mounted the ballasts.

Again, more test fitting and light tests.
First High Beams

Then HIDs

Re: [PROJECT]: Envoy Conversion w/ HID

Starting this project, I knew almost nothing about HID lighting. Thanks to s10cyncrvr and samandjen1 for very helpful information allowing me to construct an upgraded wiring harness for both the HIDs and the high beam lights. I used this diagram from s10cyncrvr to make my harness.

Re: [PROJECT]: Envoy Conversion w/ HID

The wiring was time consuming and it being my first time building a harness from scratch didn't help. Overall the harness turned out good, functions properly and offers the protection that was needed to keep the HIDs from frying the factory harness all the way back to the headlight switch, but I plan on going back and cleaning it up a bit. I never took any pics of the harness build but I did take some notes while doing it.

Re: [PROJECT]: Envoy Conversion w/ HID

looks great!

i dont understand something though, the high beams, are those just regular high beam clear bulbs? or are those the HID high beams them self? im confused.

looks great though

Re: [PROJECT]: Envoy Conversion w/ HID

looking at the diagram maybe i've got it figured out, in the first pics its starting in the high beams, the lower set of bulbs in the lenses, later on the top bulbs in the lenses are lihted and they look the same brightness, so is there like a switch or something that makes the bulb from going to looking normal to the HID look?

Okay, the top (oval looking) lights are the HID/low beams. The bottom circular lights on the outer sides are the high beams. The high beams are just 9005 bulbs, the reason why they look blue when they're off is because they are Nokya Artic White bulbs. The high beams are halogen bulbs, not HID. The way that I have them wired, I can keep the HIDs on with the high beams. This will keep from wearing out the ballasts and HID bulbs, due to switching them on and off with the brights.

Sorry man! I know that I at least mentioned that you're the one that gave me the diagram, I guess that I just forgot to thank you for it. Thanks!

Re: [PROJECT]: Envoy Conversion w/ HID

Here are some of the notes that I took on the diagram to help better illustrate what things are.

s10cyncrvr may have to help me out with this one, but I'm gonna give it a shot.
Explaination of how the new harness works:

The power from the factory harness travels through the new harness' Low Power side (relay pin #85 & #86), which then relays the power directly from the battery to pin #30 completing the circuit to pin #87 switching the HIDs and high beams on.

This is a better way of hooking up the ballasts, because of the realativly low current draw that it takes to switch on the relay. Once the relay switches on, it draws power directly from the battery not the factory harness which is why the High Power side of the harness uses heavier gauge wire.

The diodes are used to connect the low beams' wires to the high beams' wires. They only "flow" in one direction so that no power will go to the high beams while you're just running your lows. Once you flip on the highs, both low beams and high beams will be on instead of just the highs.

The diodes are marked with a symbol looking something like this: I<l
That will determine the direction that the power is allowed to flow.

Re: [PROJECT]: Envoy Conversion w/ HID

I FINALLY got my Envoy Cover yesterday! Just messin' with ya Brent, lol.
Here it is just kinda sitting on the reinforcement bumper, it's not actually clipped in or anything. I just threw it on for a couple of pics. It's missing one of the inside mounting tabs, that's why it looks funny on the sides. I'll have to locate one before having it painted.

I'm also going to trade my Chrome GMC grill for a flat black paintable one. I plan on installing a 15 bar billet grill, and think that it'll look better with a body colored grill instead of an all chrome one.

Well, really it didn't cost me too much. I paid about $300 for the lights with all the HID components. I traded my S10 steel bumper, and a busted Envoy light for the GMC impact bumper and the chrome GMC grill. Then I paid $160 for the Envoy cover, $40 for the chrome strips that go on the bumper, and $50 for a pair of Envoy fog lights. That all adds up to $550, but that's not including all the money that I got from selling my whole S10 front end. I pretty much broke even, I'd say. Now all I have to pay for is the paint and billet grills.

Re: [PROJECT]: Envoy Conversion w/ HID

The Envoy conversion with HID's seems to be picking up with popularity here lately with our growing number of forum members. I am also doing an Envoy/Xtreme conversion with HID's on my Xtreme Blazer. I am going to use the diagram and all of the information that you have posted in this thread for reference. I am using the same GMC grille that you are using too but now you've got me debating on whether or not to trade it for a flat black paintable one. Dang you! HA!HA! J/K! I hope I'm able to sell all of my not needed anymore Xtreme parts like you were. By the way, you need a S-10Forum.com sticker on your truck so that you can represent the forum bro'.
