Project: Cab Over

Heres my newest mouth to feed. Not an S-10 but it will be going on an S-10 chassis. Its a 1949 Chevy Cab Over Engine Truck. aka COE. Here are pics from the first day I got it home.

Re: Project: Cab Over

Here is the S10 I bought for the chassis.

Since this picture, the s-10 has been stripped down and all parts sold except for the bed and dash. After selling all the parts the chassis was almost free.

Re: Project: Cab Over

As you can tell, its getting a regular truck bed from the same era chevy truck. Will also sport a small block 350. It will be bagged eventually but not until I get it running and driving.

I will have updated pics soon. Today, we took the body off the original frame and got it set in the garage so we can start doing metal work.

Interesting looking project..how close in dimensions are the two trucks? From the looks of the pics the cab looks a lil too big for the lil S10.

Its easy to be fooled looking at it up on the big frame and the big hood. In all actuality, the cab portion is the same cab as the regular 47-53 trucks. It just has different wheel arches and different doors, otherwise its the same cab. There are alot of people that put the regular 47-53 trucks on s-10 frames. There is even a kit to do so. We took the hood, doors and grille out of it and 4 of us were able to lift the cab and fenders off as one unit so its not all that heavy.

As I said, this past sunday we got the body off the old frame and semi set on the s10 frame in our garage.

Heres the cab all braced up for the move

Re: Project: Cab Over

I have a show this saturday but hopefully sunday I will make some progress on this. First of all we have to put in a new garage door opener. The garge door opener decided to crap out mere moments after we got the cab inside.

I havent decided 100% on the wheels yet. I have a set of old school American Racing Hammers I hope to throw on it.

No, the truck in the youtube vid is on a 70 something c-10 chassis. He has a bunch of pics of his build on webshots i believe it is.

I'm going to leave it as it is. I want to keep the big truck look . Its friday evening, Im off the next two days and have very little I need to get done so that hopefully translates to lots of garage time!

Re: Project: Cab Over

Over the weekend i got a new passenger cab corner most of the way put in, I had a parts truck with good cowl panels, i cut the good panels out of the parts truck...i did alot of cleanup on the s10 frame, and got the cabover body mounts started. Sorry I do not have pics of the progress. I will definately get some this coming weekend if not before. We are a man short at work all week so my play time after work is non-existant this week.

my only question so far is... wont the s10 frame and side to side wheel track width be quite a bit narrow for that fullsize body and bed?

Very interesting build. Strange question though: Is the cab on a cob-over body the same as a regular truck?

Actually the s10 frame is wider than the stock cabover frame. If you look at pic # 1 in post 17 , look at the bottom of the cab, you can see how much narrower the cabover frame is in that section. also if you look at pic # 2 in post 18, you can see the main forward cab supports are acually sitting on the s10 frame with no modification at all. (in the pic it is offset to the drivers side a little but when the cab is centered, those two main supports for the cab hit dead center of the frame rails.

As far as track width, yeah the wheels will have to have low backspacing #'s The set of american racing hammers i have are 8 inch wheels with only 2 inches of backspacing. Im going to try to test fit one of them this weekend.

For the most part yeah. It is essentially a stock cab with a few tweaks to make it a cabover. the doors are different, the door hindges are different, and the wheel arch area is different. otherwise, everything else is the same as a regular truck cab.
