Re: Project 83

Thanks man having a good mask really helps alot.

fabrication is one of my things! i LOVE doing it. if there is a chance to help one of the mechanics with fabricating something, im all over it!

i also enjoy wiring (as anyone who read Project Blue Bitch thread would know )

i have to find some more metal for the other LCA hahaa! saturday, i might be working... i might be fishing, i might be fabricating hahaa! we'll see how it goes. if im working, ill also be working on the arms during lunch and breaks, if im fishing, ill be having an equally good time hanging out with my uncle

Re: Project 83

got the other LCA done today

i used some 3/16" scrap, some of the same stuff i was using before, but i had to use it more conservatively, as i didnt have much left. i had JUST enough to finish the arm.

here is what i got done today. notice more cross-welds.. thats because i had to use as much of the small piece of metal as i could.

here is the other arm. the one i was doing first looks good! still not done yet. i ran out of time... gotta finish it up tomorrow. there is a spot where the metal plate overhung, and i welded to that... when i ground it down, it turns out it didnt penetrate far enough in, and you can see the seam. not a big deal, just weld it up and grind it down again.

you can see the seam here a bit. gotta fix that tomorrow

here is the other side. i really like this look of unfinished raw metal

here is the one i did today got some nice beads laid down, and some good penetration too

other side of the arm. took me 2.5 hours total today to cut the metal, finish the edges and weld it together.

underside. looks pretty good. was really hard to clean up the surface on the inside, so it wasnt as good a weld, but its still a decent weld.

underside of the other side. the space in there is pretty tight, thats why my welds dont look too good... but they still do the job.

just showin off some of my nicer welds

tomorrow im going to re-weld the other LCA, and try to finish them both.

Re: Project 83

went out to have a look at the cab mounts, and discovered that the bottom cups were either rusted off, or completely missing! i grabbed my jack and used a block of wood, and lifted the cab off the frame without even having to unbolt anything...

scary, because we drove 50 miles like that, over bumps and stuff. the only thing holding the cab onto the frame was the weight of the shit inside the cab from the box!

so now i gotta slide the cab off the frame, patch the floor pans up, tub it, and fix the cab mounts (the ones on the driver side are spinning). im stoked

no pics, wasnt anything really special...

i threw out my back at work on friday, and made it for 7 hours before having to leave. went to the hospital, they gave me some tylenol somethings and some muscle relaxants. had a bad time a few hours later when my stomach hurt so friggin bad, it felt like someone cut me open and was pulling my guts out!

so today, i was resting, didnt feel inspired to do anything but sleep and munch a bit today.

Re: Project 83

went to pick n pull today. back was killing me, so i had to be quick.

ripped the C/C module and everything minus the magic wand on the steering column, i also grabbed the HVAC controls with A/C and a Digital gauge cluster

it took me about 5 minutes to figure out how to get this thing to light up hahaa! only crappy thing on this cluster is the tripmeter... some of the LED's are burned out

i like this thing alot! i cant wait to get it all hooked up in my new truck gotta get the cab fixed first though hahaa

Re: Project 83

was working on the dash a bit tonight, taking it easy on my back, just relaxing. lots of cleaning done.

took the automatic gear thing out, and patched it up. no more but no pics...

HVAC controls taken apart for cleaning. yay for AC options!

All put back together, and hooked up to my power source for testing. testing what...?

testing the blue LED's I installed

Dash almost all put together. Not sure what im going to do with the dash speakers... I want to turn this truck into a SQ truck, so i probably wont even use the dash speaker location in my setup.

Cruise Control Stuff everything except the magic wand.

DRAC Module from the blaze. This one is totally different from the one in my 92 pickup..

Brake things. one is for the brake lights and CC, the other one is just for the CC. im planning on automatic for this truck, so I didnt grab one for the clutch.

Here is the cruise control computer box that sits inside the dash

Cruise Control Vacuum Module. Sweet!

Re: Project 83

Did a bit of work today.

marked out the area where the head unit goes. I dont know how you guys deal with aftermarket head units, but ive done this in the Blue Bitch, and it worked good.

cut the section out

kinda out of sequence, but here is the Cruise Control Magic Wand i pulled. every other one of these either had worn wires like these, or the wires were worn right through. this was the best i could get.

pretty worn out, but it was the only one with the wires intact. no big deal... if i want new, i could just hit up the stealership.

So here is my solution to the deep head unit problem. My shop foreman suggested using the heating duct tape, and it works great! i can custom mold it too. and if i need to indent it a bit, i can always cut it and add some more to fill in the hole.

took almost 1" down. should fit most head units now.

payed 5 bucks for a ATX power supply, and turned it into my 5/12V test station. beats using my computer... i have 2 wires running from my computer, and i have touched them and shut my computer off before hahaa! not the best. well worth the 5 bucks! the wires on the left are what i removed.

Re: Project 83

hahaa, does anyone even look at this thread any more?

anywho...

got the dash almost completely built! just needs the head unit bracket, and its all good to go

yay! im thinking when i pull my wire harness, im going to build it onto the dash, and then when i put the dash into the truck, ill hook it all up. i think thats how GM does it... cause i can never get the wires back into the original location after i pull the dash out... sucks.

Yeah the wiring harness has clips that clip into the dash. If you look at the pocket on the dash you will see where the clips come threw.

Re: Project 83

so i figured out how im going to have to wire the Cruise Control light...

im going to have to convert the bulb to positive on. the current setup is a negative on.

Findings:

Grey wire on CC is the 12V on wire.

so im going to use a plug from something else, and solder to the back of the cluster, then run a wire to a 12V source, and then run the other wire to the grey wire on the CC system. bulletproof.

Re: Project 83

Problem solved!

i killed off the seat belt light (for now... dont care anyways, i never drive anywhere without my seatbelt on)

Here is what i came up with. see the track about the middle, where its all scratched up? What i did was separate the Cruise Control light circuit from the rest.

This is what i had originally come up with... Soldered a couple wires onto the back of the board to run to a ground, and the grey wire in the Cruise Control circuit.

Yea, it worked, but it was a pain in the ass... i'd rather have it wired up into the main gauge harness...

So guess what i did :P i wired it into the main harness! see that wire there, i ran the (+) side of the light into the circuit for the Check Fluids light (that GM never implemented either). I had to isolate that circuit too (see the scratches just after the solder ball). What i actually did was cut into the board, just enough to cut through the copper track, then i cut about 1mm up the track, and peeled the copper up.

So this is how it works now. All wired into the main cluster harness! I also ran a ground from the CC Light pin to the main ground for the cluster. Just gotta run the yellow wire to the grey one on the CC harness, and im good to go!

BOOYA! good to go!

I hope this can help some of you guys who wanna do the same

so i hit the C4D, and came up with this:

so what do you all think? i like it alot. its 90% to scale, minus the frame and pumpkin being a bit off... but that is generally what i want to be going for.

the SD bolt on was what i used for a couple of the angles. i used it as a reference so i could tell if i was doing it right or not. now im not sure about rear angles and stuff, but the top bars and bottom bars pivot in the exact same spot.

from a perfect side view, the top and bottom link bar mounts line up vertically
