Re: not an s10 but she is my GAL
x 4 Personally, 8-10 years ago, I would have said hell yes. Now a days, I prefer the more "clean" and "older" look, which I think you have going with the dash the way it is (obviously, it will have gauges in it, but I think the TV would kind of cheapen the look of it a bit). Of course, that choice is 100% yours, and if everyone liked/did the same things, we would all be driving the exact same vehicles. So whatever you decide, it is purely up to you. |

What heads do you plan on running? If you stay stock, pre-71 351W heads have bigger ports than the later ones but still aren't that great. I'd recommend AFR 205's or Trickflows. What cam and intake did you get?

Re: not an s10 but she is my GAL
well i got kinda screwed on the heads. the car is a 69. so naturally i thought the motor was from 69. and i know alot of people like to swap 69 heads onto there 302s. so i was going to sell them and put that money towards some new heads. well turns out the motor was replaced with a 74 motor. so i have the normal shit heads. im still doing lots of research on the heads i dont really know what i want. AFRs are too expensive for me. i was actually lookin at the edelbrock performer heads and some trickflows. im hoping i can come up on some used heads though. you dont have any from your stang or friends do you?
this is the cam i went with...http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CCA-CL35-242-3/ pretty mild cam. if the car was half the weight it would probably haul ass but it weighs 4100 pounds if the heads that i choose will allow (clearance wise) ill be going with 1.7 ratio roller tip rockers as well which will bump my lift to .542/.544 the intake manifold is the edelbrock air gap and the carb is a demon 625 double pump |

Re: not an s10 but she is my GAL
The Performer heads are just redesigned stock heads, Trickflows are the shiz. Look at the 190 FAC (fast as cast). Also, that dual plane is not ideal for a blown application. What are you doing for fuel system?

Re: not an s10 but she is my GAL
My car has garbage E7's that have had too much time wasted porting them. Check all the mustang sites; stangnet, corral.net, sbftech.com, yellowbullet. They normally have a good selection of parts. Also, checkout theturboforum.com and learn all you can about FI motors although they are mainly turbo stuff, there is some blower guys. Yellowbullet has a shit load of traffic too.

Re: not an s10 but she is my GAL
Well you can shoot for mid 300hp with the parts you have, FYI. Not to shoot you in the foot or be rude but that's about it being honest. It'll still be a good running motor though.

Re: not an s10 but she is my GAL
Heads and pistons. Your carb may also be undersized. To get the Fords to run you really need to have tons of exhaust flow. Sbf's also like split pattern cams. Spend some time on sbftech and read a bunch. There are guys on there with so much knowledge it's crazy.

Re: not an s10 but she is my GAL
Yours is .542/.544 which is close to a split pattern. A split would be like .542/.555 for example. With your engine being a 74, it most likely has flat top or dished pistons which would make about 8:5.1 compression. You add that cam to it and it will drop the compression ratio turning it into a dog of a motor. Cheap and fast don't go together.

Re: not an s10 but she is my GAL
It would be best to talk it over with an engine builder familiar with sbf's. Or, check out fordstrokers.com and see what packages they have. I'll be honest, I'm not going to tell you the "ghetto" way to make power (which would be wrong #s anyways). Just surf that forum and see what other guys are running.

also when you say my heads are part of my limiting factor to mid300s are you talking about with my stock heads or with the edelbrocks?

Stock. But on that motor 300 may be stretching it. The mid 70's weren't kind to performance

But your dream of sub $1k heads will be shattered once you start researching unfortunately. You and I are in the same boat. You could always turbo it!!

Re: not an s10 but she is my GAL
whats the specs on your motor? you running a 351 or do you have something different?
well my dream of sub 1000$ heads is mainly for used heads. if i could find some vic jr or afr (even the 185s) used for under a grand i would jump on them. but they dont seem to pop up as often as s10 parts do |

Re: not an s10 but she is my GAL
dont really have any updates other than i now have the hood back off (just easier to work in the engine bay with it off. and the rad support is now on. also the long tubes in the pictures above did not even come close to fitting. so those are now hanging on my wall and i went through 2 other sets before i found some that fit. which are shorties off a f150. so those are now on as well.

Re: not an s10 but she is my GAL
no big updates like i would have liked to have by today. just little stuff like efan is now wired, starter solenoid is wired, power wire for alt is run, main power wire from battery to the front of the car is ran, both headlight bezels have been painted, replaced the headlights for some new ones since the stock ones had shattered internals and they are sealed beams. throttle cable is finally hooked up, spark plugs are in.
i leave for a 2 week vacation tomorrow (5 hours from now actually) so hopefully when i get back the trans will finially go in and the driveline will be COMPLETE. |
