Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Crossmember showed up today!

Came with a couple other brackets that I'm guessing are for relocating the straps? Not sure, it didn't come with any instructions. And some stickers, which are good for at least 1/2" more drop, each.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Yeah, raised gas tank crossmember. Mine is just about rotted through where the strap bolts to it. I'm planning on bagging it this coming winter, so I'm gonna need it anyways. Figure it would make the most sense to buy it now and swap it when I replace the bed.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Got some paint on the crossmember.

Also just about finished up with bodywork on the bed. Still have a little rust to combat and some old filler to remove and redo, but everything should be done and painted by the end of the month.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Well, I've got a fair amount done in the past month or so.

A few weeks ago I got a few things painted.

Did the upper part of the door panels satin black, and the handle trim silver. Also wrapped the door handles in some black vinyl. So, the interior is pretty much how I want it. I painted the side mirrors, since the right one was pretty crappy looking and scuffed up, and the left one was never painted.

Also removed the cap, pulled off the rack, and sanded and prepped it.

Last Monday I picked up a drivers door from the junkyard. Absolutely no rust, and the hinge pin holes are perfect.

Had a bit of a dent, but I took care of that.

Got the rest of the chips and dents worked out, too.

Today, I pulled the headliner,

in order to remove the third brake light assembly, and shave it.

I used panel-bond again, like on the tailgate filler.

A little filler, and it's pretty much done.

Still needs a little finishing, but it's getting there!

Gonna call and get some prices on paint tomorrow, and probably drop off the bed, cap and door Tuesday, since I have it off. This week, I'm planning on pulling the bed off, replacing the cab corners, and installing the raised tank crossmember.

I only experience that feeling for a few minutes every couple of weeks. Then, I find some BS that fcuks up my roll and the project stalls again.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

This happened a week ago

Still have a bit of wet-sanding to do to get it nice and smooth, but for my first time ever painting anything with a gun, I don't think it came out too bad. Planning on getting these sanded and buffed out, and the door and tailgate painted tomorrow and Sunday.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Metallic single stage + wetsanding and buffing is not good. If your not carefull you can make a real mess. Back when i was first learning to paint i sprayed a door metallic blue and when i buffed it i ended up with "rings" everywhere that i went through the last coat of paint. The color will still be there but you disturb the metallic. now i only use single stage on solid colors.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Thanks for the advice, Jott. I'll test it out on an inconspicuous area first, just to see how it turns out. The bed doesn't really need much, but the cap is very textured. I mean, it doesn't look bad; almost intentional. But, I'd like it to be smooth.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Before

After

Half way through the first side. You can see how rough it still is on the right.

Still a little hazy. All I've done so far is sand with 1500 grit, then go over it with rubbing compound. Still needs a final buff.

Got a couple 'fossils' that wouldn't sand out, but most of the runs I had are gone.

Tomorrow I do the cap, which is gonna need a lot more work.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Not bad. Not much to it. Just gotta keep steady speed and distance. Same as spray cans. I know I need to make some adjustments to get it to lay smoother.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

to reduce that texture you wanna make sure you keep a consistent distance and speed with the gun like you said. Keept the tip about 6"-8" from the panel and watch the paint lay out of the gun. If you have the correct distance but are still getting crazy texture, you need to slow down and let it flow out more onto the panel.

what you have there is a good example of a dry texture, next time you need to follow these steps to apply a medium-wet coat/ texture and it'll be much more betterer!

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Thanks Tommy! I should be doing the tailgate and door this weekend, so we'll see how it turns out. Another question, though. When shooting the primer, I had to crank the pressure up to around 20 psi, just to get it to spray decent, without globbing up. I reduced it correctly, but it just wouldn't spray right. I ended up leaving the pressure there when I did color, which likely contributed to the dry spray. Any idea why I would've had such an issue?

What's the formula or ratio for the primer that globbed?
