Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

After having done the rust batlle on too many vehicles, I have come to this conclusion:

DON'T DRIVE THE B*TCH IN WINTER!!!

All of the work you did... WASTED!!!

So, like Extremist says... a nice rust free rig to start and you never have to skrew with rust.
I live in Baton Rouge but my house/farm is near Syracuse, NY. So... I am very familar with salt and rust. Most of my vehicles are rust free...
Why you ask?
Because they sleep when it snows! Doesn't have to be indoors, just no salt exposure.

I know, I know, everyone says that is a PIA. Well, think of all the hours you spent on the work that is hatching. Not only that, but the $$ in materials.

A cheap old Subaru ($500) and transfer the reggy for the winter to it. In the spring, you can sell it for what you paid or keep it for the next winter.

I do this when I'm home, and my vehicles stay rust free! I don't care about the winter sled, it can rust away.

I have (7) S10s and only 1 has rust (I recently sold one). Want a nice rust free 1st gen? I have a few. Just a 4 hour drive from Holyoke
(I used to live in Marblehead).

I feel for ya Dood...

Confucius say: RUST SUX!....

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Believe me, once this thing gets a new bed and all the other rust repaired, it will never see another New England winter. It's either that , or buy myself something newer and rust free, and just keep this as my winter beater. I'd really hate to do that though.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

I drive my truck every winter and the only thing that has gotten any rustier is the cab corner that was rusted when I got it 8+ years ago. Even if it's cold as fcuk, you have to keep them clean. It's as simple as that.

Yeah, well, I'm a lazy asshole. Hopefully I'll have a different vehicle for next winter. Or just coat the entire truck in POR-15.

Shit happens man. lol My post was directed more towards the bros that think there's no way to combat the elements up here. I'll agree that it's not easy but there are ways to keep your shit from rusting.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Oh, I know it was Jerry. As much as I hate the salt wreaking havoc on my truck, I love driving it so much I don't know if I'd be able to go the entire winter driving something else. The rust really hasn't gotten much worse than it was when I got the truck. I guess as long as I can fix all the current rust issues and rust-proof everything, I won't mind driving it next winter.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Did an oil change on the turd today. While it was in the air, I noticed how rotted my gas tank crossmember was.

Super! Well, when I got home after work, I promptly ratchet-strapped that bitch to the frame. I'd probably be ok for another couple months, when I pull the bed off to do bodywork, and I could just do it then. But I didn't want to risk it. Plus, I'm driving close to 100 miles to pick up a new bed tomorrow, and knowing my luck, this thing would let go 80 miles from home, doing 70 down the highway, spark, and blow the entire truck up.

I'll be sure to get some pics tomorrow of the new bed.

Two-fiddy. Completely rust free. Some minor damage on the right side, but nothing down to bare metal.

Wheel arches are beautiful.

Like I said, slight damage on the right side, but nothing terrible.

Should be able to pop out most of it. Some body work was done on the bottom of the bed, but it all looks solid and rust free.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Some more gratuitous shots of the new bed.

Bed floor is absolutely perfect. Not a single dent.

Inside the wheel wells is so nice and rust free, I giggled a little when I took these pics.

A couple down sides though...

Bed has obviously been repainted. Looks like they didn't scuff the bed floor, because it's peeling in quite a few spots. Not a major concern since I'm gonna roll on some bedliner after I paint it. The exterior is good. No flaking or peeling anywhere. It's actually a very thorough repaint. Behind the taillights and under the bed rails and every other place you'll never really see was painted.

This upset me the most. It's actually a 98+ bed, with the holes drilled, and redrilled for the stupid plastic end caps. I really wish I didn't have to deal with filling them in. But, it needs other work done in those areas , so it's not the end of the world. Overall, I'm beyond satisfied with it. Can't wait to start working on it once it gets warm enough.

Exactly one year ago, I was standing on the side of the road, freezing my tits off because this shit happened

Against the advice of most, including a lot of you, I rebuilt it as best I could, as cheap as I could. I'm gonna bust ass like never before this coming spring, and have this truck complete and ready to roll to as many shows and cruises as I can possibly make.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Headlight covers never gave me an issue with the po-po. Nothing I would ever do again though. Kinda grew out of that phase.
No updates on the truck, except for abusibg it through its (hopefully) final winter.

Did pick this up Saturday to properly pull the dents from the new bed.

And, of course, the next day I found another bed, in better shape, for less, and an hour closer!! It even already has a spray on bedliner, which I was planning on doing. The guy says he's not sure when I'll be able to come look/buy it because of the snow. Haven't heard from him since, so who knows.

Heading out to RI to grab a new aftermarket hood from Tommy (slowlowandbangin) on Sunday. That way I won't be rolling hoodless while getting paint. And I can always switch back and forth between green and flat black (I'm not sure which I wanna do yet).

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Man that bumper was a pain in the tits to take off!! But that's what 19 years in New England will do to steel. Tried my hardest with Tommy's ratchet, with a random lug wrench I found on the ground, shoved on the end for more leverage. Managed to get one bolt broke free. Other two (one was already missing, someone else probably tried snagging this bumper before me) wouldn't budge. Pretty much gave up, packed shit up, and started walking out. Then, I spotted a two foot piece of pipe in the bed of (ironically) another Ranger. Looked at Tommy, "I got this", went back and managed to bust the other two bolts loose. Snipped the wires for the plate lights, and walked out of there with the whole deal for $56.15.
I'll take some pics and put them up later.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Back side it pretty rusty, but nothing that a wire wheel and some paint can't fix.

But it's perfectly straight and the front is nice and rust free.

Just need to straighten out a small bend in the top, behind the license plate area, paint the plastic cap black, wire up the lights, and install it.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Is there any way you can trim the radius on the ends so it follows the curve of the end of the bed better and tuck the whole bumper closer to the body Or would it require a buttload of work because the top/center of the bumper sits flush against the bed floor?

If that makes any sense.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

The top center area of the bumper is right up against the bed floor. But, that doesn't mean I can't cut off 3/4" or so to get it to tuck in a little more. I'm probably gonna experiment with the shitty one first, so I don't ruin a perfectly good bumper.

The one on it now (dented one) is from an '03. The new one is off a '95. 94-05 are all the same, as far as I've read. Plastic cap is a little different, though. Jerry, I'll be using the new cap, too. Just gonna paint it black. The old one is missing a bunch of the mounting tabs, and has a hole busted in it.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

New ones are 50 bucks on the bay. They should be more like 30 if you ask me. You should eventually really mess with one of those bumpers though. I think one would look really good sucked up to the body a little more. I've been thinking about a rear bumper for a while now myself.

Was originally thinking of tucking it in as far as possible, almost like a chrome roll pan. But , I really like to look of a bit of bumper sticking out the back of the truck. Gives it a better side profile, I think. Plus, it makes it look a little more station wagon-y, which is kinda what I'm going for.

Yeah, I'm not saying slam it into the bed until it reaches roll pan status. I just mean tucked enough where the re-radiused ends sit flush with the bed corners.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

Did some measuring yesterday, and the brackets on the Ranger bumper are 8" narrower than the s10 frame. I'm gonna have to come up with a bracket/adapter to make up the difference. No angle iron this time!! I learned my lesson.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

So, apparently I've picked up the habit of buying truck bumpers in Rhode Island.

98+ front bumper in much better shape than the one I originally bought.

Also got the brackets, which the other one didn't have.

Bumper has a few chips/scrapes that need to be smoothed out. But, other than that it's pretty much ready to paint.

Re: MyTruckHasNoPantsOn!

when I put the 98+ brackets on my 97 I had to weld a little extra onto the body mount for the rad suppt. On a 98+ it has a fatter gusset on the body mount where the bracket bolts in. I welded more material on for the bracket to have something to grab onto.

Once you have the bumper on and mocked up you'll see what I'm talking about.
