Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

I might not be able to get that rollpan this week but i did get my cooling system fixed. I put on a new upper hose, lower hose, thermostat, and coolant temperature sensor. I have pics but i have to get to bed so i'll upload tommorow. I managed to break the little end off the two wires that attach to the stud holding the radiator filler neck on so my gauges are ****ed and won't work and my dashlights won't come on. I'm getting a ride to and form work tommorow then putting new ends on them and test driving the truck tommorow. Hopefully my temp gauge now works but if not i guess i'll just have to get a friggin gauge..

Pic #1 = Upper hose installed
Pic #2 = New ends on the wires and put back on the stud for the filler neck. I had to put another nut on because i couldin't remove th eone that was supposed to hold the wires on so it has 3 nuts on it.
Pic #3 = Finished.

I replaced:

*Upper radiator hose
*Lower radiator hose
*Thermostat
*Coolant temperature sensor
*Filler neck gasket

My temp gauge works now but i'm not really sure what it should be at under normal operation. Mine sits between 100 and 210. And on the way to my girlfriends house (4 miles) my lower radiator hose came off the engine (But stayed attached to the radiator) I put it back on and made sure it was as far on the engine as i could slide it then cranked the hell out of the screw on the clamp. It was still on after i drove 4 miles back to the gas station to check it. Also I pumped over 13 gallons of gas and it didn't shut off this time...maybe i have a 20 gallon tank and i had more gas in it last time than i thought? How would i really check that? But anyway ignore the dirt under the hood. I had been working on it otherwise it normally wouldn't be that dirty. Most of the time i wipe everything with a rag and some sort of spray degreaser like greased lightening or something similar. I also worked on my blazer some. I got a wire wheel and started stripping the frame some more and i may have a guy trading or selling me a 350 block that's bored .40 over but it needs a $230+ rebuild kit which i can manage.

This works everytime. I got the silicone, gear oil, and the round off thing. I'll see you sunday sometime. Still debating on coming out saturday. I'm hanging out with some other friends and just depends on how much I drink at dinner before hand.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

The other end of the lower radiator hose wasn't tight enough and it dripped out a little on the way to work and to get lunch but i borrowed tools from work and tightened it down and topped it off on my way out of the parking lot to go home. It hasn't leaked any that i could tell on the way home and i drove 50-55mph almost the whole way so if it was going to overheat it would have then.

Since i did mechanical work i don't have the money this week for that rollpan i wanted but i plan to do body work next week. I think i'm going to alternate and one week do mechanical and then the next week do something body-wise.

I would primer the whole truck but just doing the bed was hard enough. I hate priming because of all the sanding, taping, spraying, and sanding that you have to do in order for it to look decent. I'm thinking about going ahead and spraying bedliner inside my bed though and on the backside of the tailgate.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

This is going to be short since it's 2am and i have to be up for work at 7:30 but Eric (Svtzx555) got the rounded off bolt for me today and replaced the gasket and filled the rear differential so thanks to him that's another thing on the truck that's fixed. I will be taking it back off later to put on a new cover so i'll be putting on a new gasket again aswell as silicone this time.

I also found out that the gasket for the filler neck on the engine block is leaking since there was water aorund it and sitting on my block. I took it off tonight and put silicone on then tightened it back down. Here's a couple pics i took.

And i took off the trim from the front bumper since the left corner was being held on with electrical tape by the previous owner. It'll do until i can buy a new chrome bumper without the holes.

The rust spots and the chrome peeling off isn't as bad in person. But it still sucks balls...

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

I degreased the motor some more earlier. You can really start to see my intake manifold now since i got all the shit off it. I'll ge tpics later when i degrease some more. I am planning a oil and filter change this week along with swapping alternators between my blazer 4.3 and my pickup 4.3 and replacing my belt on my motor. Not sure yet what i'm doing bodywise this week but it might be the new front bumper and the clear corner lights. I'll just have to see.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Drove to Big Ten today to have an estimate on my front brake job and when the guy tried starting the truck to pull it on the lift the truck wouldn't ****ing crank. My friend an i messed with for a good 15 minutes and no change so we said **** it and push started it. It cranked right up in second when i popped the clutch but turning the key normal wouldn't do shit.

I'm going to have to check stuff tommorow after work. I'm putting in the new ignition cylinder then trying the truck and if it still does it then i'll replace the wires going to the starter and then if it still does it i have a new starter that should fit that's on my blazer 4.3

Btw i'm changing my oil and using 10w40 instead of 10w30 this time and if i think it's fine i may go to 20w50 next oil change. I'll still be changing my oil this week aswell as the accessory belt and swapping alternators. I'm also putting on a dressup part under the hood but i'll wait until it's on to tell what it is.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Degreasing the block and timing chain cover..

You can actually see my intake manifold now that the ton of grease is gone...

What i'll be doing tommorow night or Thursday evening..

Eric thinks it will be fine to run 20w50 but since i'm running 10w30 right now i'm going to give 10w40 a try for now and see how it runs with it instead of 30 weight. Should hopefully help with oil pressure during hot days. If 10w40 doesn't satisfy me i'll be switching to 20w50 next time.

I dread replacing the ignition cylinder tommorow but it's got to be done. Hopefully that will solve the problem. It's obviously got to to be the ignition cylinder, starter,or starter wiring. It's probably the cylinder and if not then the starter. I'll post the results once i get the cylinder put in.

I've used them before without problems. I'm pretty sure it's better than the walmart brand that's on it now.

But a little problem....i can't get the new ignition switch to turn back enough to get the key out. It will turn forward and crank the truck and turn the truck off but it won't go back anymore. I can't figure it out and i'm stuck now because i need the lockplate tool to get the lockplate back on and everythign anyways.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

I got the ignition lock cylinder replaced but it's still not doing anything sometimes after driving for a little bit. I'm wondering if pherhaps the starter is getting too hot and not wanting to kick in or what. I'm going to check the wires and starter the next chance i get. The inside of the bed will be done soon. I got a can of bedliner for the backside of the tailgate now i just need to get some for the inside of the bed.

I know it's dirty but i've been busy and my free time has been spent working on it. I'll be washing it and cleaning inside after work tommorow. Kinda debating wether to drive it and hang out this weekend or not. I need to put my new accessory belt on because at random time my belt squeels bad lately. New alternator is going on at the same time. I should have that done Sunday sometime.

Thanks and yes it does suck. I hate how it won't do anything sometimes when i turn the key but it's something that can be fixed with enough effort.

I put on the new serpentine belt today and it runs so much better now. Also i put on a new alternator that i originally had on my blazer 4.3
I also sprayed the backside of the tailgate with liner. And as you can see i put on a cheap 8 ball shifter for now until i can buy an 8 ball and machine out my own authentic 8 ball shift knob.

After first spraying with liner

Old belt and alternator

New belt and alternator

Second spraying of bedliner and installed.

Engine shot after some more degreasing and putting on the new belt and alternator. It's not really this dirty in person but the flash makes it looks real dirty. In person it's really clean

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

First i want to get my brakes done and get my bushings replaced. My alignment is off apparently because going 65 on the interstate i could feel a lot of vibration in the front end and so could jessie.

I've got to buy a starter i think because Saturday it cranked fine but tonight leaving Brittany's house it wouldn't crank and i had been there for about an hour and a half. We had to get it rolling down her driveway to the road then i took a left down the hill and popped the clutch and it started up. It's wierd because after driving the 4 miles home i shut the truck off and tried to crank it with the key and it started up then.

I'm still wondering if maybe my starter is getting overheated because of my motor. I don't think the straight Y pipe exhaust could be dumping that much heat under the truck to get the starter overheated. Plus how could it do it when it's been sitting there but not after driving?

I'm going to price starters and maybe get it this Thursday and replace it. Once my income tax gets here i will have the front bumper and rollpan for sure. I know i keep putting it off but mechanical stuff keeps coming up and as much as i would like my truck to look better i would prefer to drive it like it is then have it look better but not operate.

I will be out this weekend though. If you want i was thinking about going to Irvington to the drag races with Brittany and i don't know how much it is but we could race there if you still want to.

dude. you don't want to race me. i'd kill you lol. i have a couple friends going out draggin sat night so i'll be on airport.

you should get a door before you get the roll pan. have you checked your wiring to your starter yet? that may be the problem, i'd check that first. and also call around to some muffler shops like mcdonald muffler or something and get a price quote to make a new y pipe.

Whatever you say man.....whatever you say. You'd be choking on my exhaust fumes But seriously we'll have to rae one day just for fun. 4.3 vs 4.3 would be pretty fun because it should be close.

I thought about getting doors with power windows but i want to have your friend prime them before i put them on the truck but i can't get in touch with him. I haven't messed with the wiring. I was just going to replace the starter and replace the starter wiring. I had to pop the clutch yesterday to crank it when leaving Brittany's brother's house. His yard is flat though and he lives by a small hill so i got lucky.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Took me 4 hours or so but i managed to replace the starter and it sounds so much better than the old one. It sounds a lot smoother when i crank it where the other sounded rough. I don't know if it will still act up but it shouldn't. I've got to get a connector for my starter wire because i had to cut it but it's good for now until i get off work tommorow.

I also replaced my positive and negative battery cables while i was working on the starter. I'm going to go back under the hood tommorow after work and probably trade ignition coils between my blazer 4.3 and my truck 4.3 because the blazer has a new coil on it where the one on my truck works but it's old.

I'm also more than likely buying my tachometer tommorow after i return my old starter and get the $35 core charge back. If not i'll buy something for under the hood or something small.

I've decided to wait until i get doors to get my rollpan. I will be hopefully buying my doors this next paycheck and getting 2 new doors with power windows. After that i'll buy the rollpan. Once income tax get's here i would like to take it and buy a new cowl hood but i'll have to wait and see once it get's here. I do want 2nd gen mirrors though and i found some nice 18's for $150

Oh,and this shirt used to be white when i started

And the goggles are because grease, dirt, and rust kept falling in my face and it didn't feel too good when it got in my eye so i went inside and put them on.

I'll post pics tommorow after i replace the coil and clean under the hood. It looks bad right now because there's a thin film of dirt everywhere....

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Didn't get a chance to replace the coil yet. I'll be replacing it tommorow before the weekly "meet". I've still got to put a connector on my starter wire becauuse i had to cut it and right now it's just stripped and twisted together until tommorow after work when i can put the connector on.

I was thinking today and i've decided once i get the front end fixed up (Bushings, and brakes) and i lower it i'll go 4/5 instead of 2/3. I got my state income tax but i have yet to get my federal and my stimulus check >_<

Pics tommorow after i replace the coil, clean under the hood, and wash the truck. Also vaccuming this week since i didn't last week.

Edit: I've been looking at first gens with a 4/5 and they don't look very low. Would i have rubbing issues or need a notch with a 4/5? I could always go 3/4 because i don't want to notch the frame right now nor do i want the tires to rub since it's a daily driver and that shit would get on my nerves.

Sweet. I thought about that then i read about static drops and notches and i couldn't find anything about needing a notch for a 4/5. I cleaned under the hood and put some wireloom on but no pics. I will be hopefully getting doors this coming week.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Not much changed but it's neater under the hood. i'm not the best at wireloom either but i replaced the dry-rotted wireloom last night (Some of it)

I'm going to try and take a trip to the u-pull it again and find a couple nice doors with power windows and get them for the truck. Hopefully Tuesday when i'm off because i will be getting paid for lawncare jobs and should have the money for them before payday. While i'm there i may also get some 2nd gen mirrors.

But anyway here are some new photos until i have the money for the doors

New cables =)

Scrubbed some more with degreaser. It's slowly getting clean

New starter (Kinda difficult to get a photo when the motor was only shut off about 5 minutes before and is still burning up plus trying to get near the header to see the starter)

The new bed...i need to finish with the wirewheel inside the bed so i can do the floor and the wheelwells

It'll definitely be at 190K by Thursday.

Clean as ****......except the worn seat but i'll get to that soon enough

And thanks. I'm making decent progress but not the amount i would like. Most of it has been mechanical and not enough of anything else.

While everyone is in the giving mood, I have some second gen swirly wheels that you can have too. I have some 3" blocks and u bolts too laying around also.

You need to look for some cavalier bucket seats and ditch the benchseat while you're at the junkyard. The truck is really starting to clean up.

It might be cheaper to drive. I get like 400 miles on a tank and it costs about $52 to fill up with 5 gallons in the tank. Doors here run like $65 each i think is what the u-pull it guy said....

Edit: Nevermind...it's over 600 miles just to get there. If i had the money i'd drive up there and pick them up. I might just check the u-pull it again and weigh my options.

No way...

Bench seats are awesome. I just need to have mine re-done with new padding and black leather for covering. I'm not terribly worried about it right now though because it's not too bad. I want the truck itself fixed up more first. Thanks though

Edit: I might be interested in the 3" blocks. It's not 4/5 like i want but it would be a little lower for now. I just need 2" drop spindles for the front. I'm not really interested in the 2nd gen wheels anymore. Nick know someone who was selling a set of 18's for $150 or something like that. I haven't seen them yet but i'm interested in those.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Plans this week are to replace the right front rotor so that my brakes are in good shape and so the truck won't hop all over the place when i get on the brakes (Warped rotors ****ing suck)

Also while working on it i'm going to replace my upper control arm bushings because one is missing and the other is getting torn up. That should make the control arm not rattle around when i brake or go over bumps and will make for a nicer ride aswell. Once that's done i will be going with a 2/3 drop unless something doesn't go as planned.

I would get my doors this week but i forgot i have to pay my insurance so there isn't much left this week unless i get paid this week for my lawncare jobs. If i do then i will be hitting up the u-pull it for a set of doors (Or at least a passenger door for now)

How much is involved in replacing manual doors with power doors?

If you replace one rotor you should defently replace the other! But you are really turning this truck around!

Thanks

I haven't put the rotor or control arm bushings on yet but i have already bought them just no time to put them on. My income tax is still not in yet so i don't have much new going on right now. I might go ahead and get a new door this coming week. I've got a date scheduled on June 10 to have a 1 piece rear window installed.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

The truck is looking good!

I ran 10-w40 for a while in my 4.3 and developed alot of lifter noise. Went back to 10-w30 and it went away. Must be the Cali heat.

Your a/c still working?

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

It works but it's not extremely cold. I've got to replace more stuff on it but for now i'm interested in doing more body work this week. If nothing happens i am going to try and find a way to get to the junkyard for a door but i work every day >_<
