Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Got the rear brake line on. I need to tighten the connections but it's bolted down snug. I have the front ready except for removing the line from the calipers. I need vice grips for that because it's too tight and trying to strip out. I'll do that tommorow when i can borrow a set since i don't have mine.

After that's done the next order of business is to swap fuel lines to the frame. I've got the front tires off my truck and waiting to swap spindles when i get the motor mounts on my new frame. I think i'm just going to cut the old ones off the frame and buy a new set this payday. They're probably shot anyway and too they're so rusty they would most likely be near impossible to remove.

I only got 1 hour in before dark but that was one cold ****ing hour of work. It's freezing outside already

Gas tank seems level now too. I've got to finish up a little bedliner under the transmission crossmember and do some spots that were missed on the front still. Not much longer...

might I suggest you paint the gas tank and drive shaft and axel tubes. I will only take a few and is easier to do with the body off.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

I'm not really concerned with the driveshaft. The gas tank will eventually be replaced with a brand new one so i'm not worries about it. The rear end could use cleaning but i'd prefer not to mess with it right now.

It would be a nice touch but i've been without my truck for 3-4 weeks now so i'd just like to get it put back together and drive it right now.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Got the front brake lines on. The paint brush has some thinner on it still and it thinned the bedliner when my girlfriend was putting it on (While i was laying in the dirt with a wrench, undoing the brake lines..) so the parts she did won't stick i don't think. Some of it looks ok while small parts look milky so i may have to hose it off and re-do those parts. It's all good though. It was kinda my fault anyway because i should have dried the brush out better after cleaning it.

No pics since everybody knows what brake lines look like when installed. I plan to get the fuel lines removed tommorow after work and installed onto the new frame. Then Saturday i will probably label all of the wires under the hood that way when Sunday comes and i put the motor on the frame i won't have to figure out where all of those wires go.

Hope to have motor bolted on Sunday evening and have my fuel lines connected to it. Maybe Tuesday or probably th next Sunday i will transfer the cab and hook up the wires and bleed the brakes and clutch (Yay....not. Bleeding hydraulic lines suck)

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Disconnected the fuel lines but i need to pick up some 3/8" drive sockets. I have 13mm sockets but no ratchet to fit them
A couple more nuts and my fuel lines should come off the frame. I won't be working on it tonight probably but i'm going to try and get off work early tommorow if i'm lucky and my co-worker shows up.

Just waiting on my girlfriend to get off then we're on our way to the coast guard base for a private tour
Pays to have a friend/co-worker who's in the coast guard..

Picked up some sockets last night but didn't really do anything to it because it was too late. Definately will have the fuel lines off tonight. The engine transfer should go on as planned tommorow.

Fuel lines are on. I don't have them snapped into the clip that holds them to the frame but i'll fix that tommorow. I'm tired and ready to relax form work. It's starting to look like a truck again

Pics tommorow when the real action takes place.

Unbolted the engine and removed the spindles and bags. I also put my steering box onto the new frame. I couldn't get an engine lift but the mechanic i know down the road is letting me borrow one tuesday when i'm off work again so hopefully it will be on the new frame by the end of the day.

I'm ****ing tired....

I hope to get it bolted on the new frame tommorow. I need to pick up a new positive battery wire and some misc parts like a 90 degree end for one of my vacuum lines because it broke. Also need some gaskets and gear oil. I'll post tommorow evening when i'm done with everything.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Engine is on the new frame. I need to find the bolts to hold the engine mount to the frame mount though. I have some in to hold it but i can't find the right ones. I'll find them and put them in asap. I need a transmission mount thursday when i get paid too. They only run $7.99 plus tax and take like 5 minutes. The engine fell today though and i need a harmonic balancer and one other pulley on the front. ****ing sucks but oh well.

I've got pics but i'll upload them after i return the engine hoist to the mechanic's shop that let me borrow it.

How bad was the damage to the harmonic balancer? If it took a hard enough hit to destroy it you may have damage to the crank as well.

Not that bad. It bent the edge of it but it wasn't catastrophic. It's bent just enough to piss me off. I'm going to price them new when i get home tonight.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Picked up some parts today. They didn't have the pulley for the harmonic balancer though. I did however get the power steering pump pulley but i am waiting until Sunday to rent the puller/installer to put it on.

I bought this setup so i can install my bags and lines then use a portable air tank with 120psi to raise the front up so i can move it out from the carport to install the cab (No room under there)

I need to look for the pulley on the harmonic balancer but nobody local has it except for junkyards probably. I may try and pull one local at the u-pull it and just spraypaint it and make it look new or order one off summit or something...

Didn't have time to get the front put together but i plan to have the lower control arms back on,spring pocket cut,and bags installed tommorow evening after work. Pics tommorow..

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Nah they don't really care. The older lady who lives next door (You can see her hous ein some of the pics of the frame under the carport) actually encourages me on my truck. Also most of the remaining neighbors love my truck and were sad it got wrecked. While i don't like them all the time i must admit they can be pretty cool people.

Update: I called summit and the guy found me a chrome pulley for the harmonic balancer that is a stock replacement. What's awesome about it,the chrome version is actually cheaper than the black one
It should be here around tuesday considering i'm ordering it online now.

Btw lowconstruction,i have a '86 blazer frame, some parts, and another 4.3 engine on the other side of my house aswell

Was told the worng part on summit. The only pulley they have is an underdrive pulley so i'll be getting a few more horsepower and i am getting a new serpentine belt too since the pulley is a little smaller.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Bags rub so i need to cut the spring pockets some more but i didn't bolt everything down yet anyway so it won't be a hassle to remove. I've got to take the bags out tommorow or Sunday and cut the spring pocket then the front should be done. I have it setup so i can fill my portable 7 gallon tank to 100psi and air up the truck level using it.

Pics but i don't have time to resize and upload tonight. I'll post them on my lunch break tommorow at work.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

If my transmission was raised a little this is how it would actually lay..

My temp setup for working on it..

Down..

Up...

Whole thing...

I've got to take my bags back out and cut the spring pockets more but other than that it's good to go. I need to tighten down my castle nuts and lower control arms but everything is just on temporarily right now. Next step after getting all of that finished is tightening my brake lines and fuel lines then put the cab onto the frame and start plugging wires and stuff back up. I need to charge my battery too i bet.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Old versus new

Damage to the old power steering pulley

Installed

Driveshaft connected

Everything is how it used to be....but shouldn't this be in further? It will come out more when i slide the transmission forward so it goes into the crossmember hole.

Damage to the hamonic balancer pulley (Crankshaft pulley or w/e else you want to call it)

I tightened my brake lines earlier and checked my driveside bag. It still leaks for some reason but **** it. I'm going to see if i can get my friend Nick over to look at it since he has more experience and maybe he can figure it out. I may have to buy another bag because i can't find a leak on the fitting or anything. I'm fixing to look on summit for a fan/water pump pulley because my dad pointed out mine is ****ed up. The shaft on the pump looks good but the pulley looks bent. I'm considering using the electric fan off our old '91 cavalier and removing my engine driven fan. I'm not for sure on it yet though. Anywya that's my current progress. i need to finish tightening stuff and making sure everything is lined up right then i will be ready to lift the cab onto the frame, bolt it down, and start hooking up the ratnest of wires. Progress when i get everything tight and figure out how to get the cab up and onto the frame.

OK, im back! It just keeps lookin batter. Did you try takin the bag off and filling it with air, put it in a bucket of water and see if bubbles appear??? That way you can figure out if its the bag thats leaking or not.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

I thought about that but no,i didn't. I might do it this evening when i get home but i hate taking the cotter pins out and removing everything then putting it back. It's a pain. I'll do it though and if it's the bag i guess i'll order another dominator 2500. I'm trying to find a water pump pulley right now. Summit has one from march pulleys that is $61.88 and should work nicely with my underdrive pulley. I'm ordering it or a stock one form lmc. Probably just order the one form summit this thursday when i get paid again.

Ever think about cleaning the watery rust off the engine while the engine was out? May look 100X's better once you get the truck back together.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

I found the leak on the driverside. It's coming from the bag fitting. I just ordered a new one from suicidedoors and it should be here by the end of the week i hope. My underdrive pulley is being delivered tommorow sometime. I just need to figure out how to keep my crankshaft form turning when i try to break those bolts loose.

I have thought about cleaning the engine but i'm not sure what to use to get it clean..? I'm ordering my water pump pulley this Thursday. I found one on summit that will work with my underdrive pulley setup.

I've decided that i'm running a chrome 3 piece grill since i only have core supports for the older grills. I'm sticking with the bumper like i had and the clear bumper and corner lights though.

I've got to get my fitting replaced then i can air it up and roll it out next to my old frame and lift the cab onto the new frame.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Got my pulley off the harmonic balancer (Learned a trick from a car forum actually) and took a look at the water pump. I know there's a round piece with studs that goes onto the shaft then the pulley slides on and finally the fan slides on and bolts it all together. I can't figure out how the round piece is held onto the shaft though. It looks like it has a groove for some kind of retaining clip but i looked at the one off my blazer and i can't see one. I'm thinking about just swapping the water pump off the blazer but i need gaskets and silicone first.

Underdrive pulley will be on tommorow. Pics then.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Swapped water pumps with my blazer's 4.3 after getting gaskets and silicone. Pics later. I've still got to swap the radiator hose on it because mine has been replaced since i bought the truck and the other is old as crap. Getting a new fan blade from summit Thursday. I should have my new serpentine belt on tonight when i get back home. I'm eventually replacing all of the pulleys but for now i'm just replacing enough to get it running. I need to do a couple more things still then i think it will be ready for the cab.

That underdrive pulley has got me itching to do more stuff to my engine so once it's fully bagged i'd like to build up my 4.3 a little bit too.

Old water pump

"New" water pump (Came off my blazer 4.3)

The leak....

I put everything together on the driveside but i didn't tighten the castle nuts on the balljoints yet. I just set everything in lace and hand tightened the nuts so i could take it off the jack and get it normal for now. The new fitting for the driverside bag is on it's way and once it get's here i'll just lift the truck, stick the jack under it,raise the jack, then let the air out of the bags and swap the fitting.

I need to find one piece for my valve cover. Anybody know what the peice is that comes out of the passenger side valve cover and the vacuum line connect it to the throttle body? The previous owner electrical taped it because it was broke and i can't figure out what they're called so i can replace it...

A pic might help. Probably some sort of pcv valve. Hope you get it running soon. I just got my s10 back up and running. A new distributor and spark plugs work wonders.

It will be soon. I need to figure out how i am getting my cab on without damaging stuff. I'd prefer to get a lot of people and lift but it's hard to get that many people at the same time. The engine pretty much needs a fan blade and it's good.

Thanks but it's cool. I'll price them at advance and probably buy a new one and install it tommorow evening after getting home from work. I always wondered why it was taped but i never messed with it. Glad i didn't

Here's an idea...couldn't cap off where the hose form the pcv valve goes into the throttle body then use one of those "Breathers" or whatever that some people have on their valve cover? Or would that hurt anything?

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

the pcv is setup like that so the vaccum in your intake sucks the pressure and what not out. id leave it setup how it is. ive never been able to find an exact description of the workings of that. But i know older cars *40s at the newest* had just hoses that run out and down the side of the engine and they would smoke out of the tube so alot of guys hook up new style pcv systems to do away with it.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

I just bought another pcv valve and popped it in. I was trying to take out my heater hose form the intake manifold but the ****er is corroded to hell and i was wiggling it and it just broke off in my hand. The threaded peice is still in the intake manifold (****!!!!!) but a little is sticking out so maybe,MAYBE i can put some plyers or vice grips on and work it loose with some penetrating spray and patience.

If not i'm going to try buying a big bolt extractor and if that doesn't work i'm contemplating just using a rubber mallet and screwdriver to break that part off and take a shop vac or something and get any pieces that fall into the hole on the manifold.

Shits pisses me off....

Also,i put in 4 quarts of gear oil in the transmission and it's not full. How many does it take? The auto takes like 5 but i don't think 1 more quart will do it on mine. I've been having an aggrivating day that has just dragged by..
