Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Got off early and blasted the frame with the hose so could actually see the rust spots underneath the dirt and filth. There was about 1/2" of dirt on the skidplate that looks like it had been there for a good 5 years so it's not all off yet. The whole frame isn't too bad but i need to put some rust primer on then put on the bedliner. The primer should be done tommorow once everything is off the truck. If i have enough $ left i'll buy the bedliner and brush it onto the primer and then start putting some of the truck parts onto the frame.

Eric is dropping off the hoist for the engine tommorow so that should be out and my friend Russel is probably coming by tommorow so we might be able to get the cab off too. That would leave removing the fuel lines from the frame, breaking the ball joints and removing the spring and cutting the pocket, and sanding/priming of the frame.

I plan to paint the control arms and bag brackets while i'm at it. That way EVERYTHING is nice and freshly painted before it's put back together.

Pics when i get something done

I need to get the engine and tranny off tommorow then blast the frame with the hose and sand it down and primer it.

Thanks
I've got 3 weeks and 1 day to go. The engine is scheduled to come off tommorow then i'm sanding down the rust and priming it. . Also drilling my skidplate for the trailer ball before i lower it. It's a bitch to get the drill under it with the front low.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

No,no....it had nothing to do with dragging. It was a normal wreck that happened on my lunch break. Some woman was driving down the turning lane about 20mph to get out of traffic and make her turn (She got over way too early ) and i couldn't see her around the big ass line of traffic and went to pull into the turning lane and hit her/she hit me.

To top it off the bitch was driving with a suspended drivers license and in someone else's car.. safe to say i don't think she'll be getting shit.

I thought about that after i posted. I only bolt it on when i plan to drag and i drag until it's almost gone so there's nothing left to hit anything.

I'm using some oil base metal primer from ace hardware for the frame then using bedliner on top of the primer.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Got everything off but my grinder went out. If i bend the back of it to the left it works but otherwise it won't come on. I think it's a short like something came loose but i took it apart and tightened everything but still nothing. I got part of the frame good with the flap disk but it's not ready for the primer yet. I need to fix my grinder or get my hands on another then i can resume.

Priming then coating the frame and putting the motor mounts onto the frame. More updates to come but for now i'm heading to bed. I'm tired as hell

good job on the grinding, sucks your grinder went out. What kind was it? I have a Ryobi and it hasn't died on me yet. I stress yet cause sometimes I feel it's going to die on me.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

It was a cheap black & decker. I paid about $30 for it and put it through hell. I'm kinda not surprised it gave out but i wish it would have waited just a little. I might try fixing it again and get some mor elife out of it so i can finish my frame today. I'm just going to buy another one like it thursday when i get paid but when i get some more $$ i'm going to try and find a nice one with a warranty on it from lowes or ace.

I'll get more pics when i get home from work. If i have to my friend Russel can probably bring an angle grinder from his dad's house and we'll us my flap disk on it. If we can get the rust down then we'll be ready to primer the backhalf of the frame.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Primed the portions of the frame that i could. I need to get me another grinder so i can get the inside of the framerails down enough that i can prime in there. Also need to degrease and clean off the front end and get the suspension out. Not bad for a paintbrush (Although a sprayer would have been nicer)

First time priming a frame too..

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Flap disk, wire brush, and brake cleaner. That will get just about anything off. I used brake cleaner for the grime on the front end from the oil leaking and then scrubbed it with a wire brush.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Since my grinder died i used a sanding block and some 60 grit paper to sand the inside of the frame-rails and then brushed primer on the inside and another coat on the outside of the rails. Cleaned it up some more on the front end from the oil/power steering and also drilled out my skidplate for the trailer ball.

I'll get some pics in a bit. I need to disconnect my spindles so i can lift the upper control arm so i can paint the part of the frame under it but i'll do that tommorow. It's about 2 weeks,5 days until the deadline and it's coming along fairly good. The slow part will be removing the parts off my truck and hooking everything back up onto this frame.

I even have to swap the fuel lines and everything so yeah....installing parts will be a little slower. But for now, back to work...

Drilled the hole closer to the front this time so i won't need a long shank to bolt on the ball..

I have to buy a small paint brush to get some parts of the frame but i'll get that tommorow. Probably talk my girlfriend into doing that part since she likes arts & crafts so she loves painting whereas i hate painting

The rear bumpstops? I'm leaving them on because i'd rather hit rubber than metal because even with 3" blocks i bottom out when coming out of bumpy parking lots. They'll come off when i cut the frame for the notch this December.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Didn't get any work today because it's pouring rain today and tommorow. I hope to do some work tommorow though. If i have to i'll put some poles in the ground and put a tarp over them and work under the tarp in the rain. I need to prime the front and take the other spindle off and clean there. Also i need to finish up some small places on the back.

Bought another angle grinder today and got the bedliner. Should have bedliner on it by the weekend. Hope to have the engine/transmission/rear end on it too.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Thanks
It's awesome to know people like it so much. Me and my girlfriend did some more primer today and i put some bedliner on the rear of the frame but it was getting chilly outside and it was hard to see even with the worklight so we stopped for today. I plan to do more bedliner on the rear of the frame tommorow and hopefully get started on the front. I also bought some spray bedliner tonight for the hard to reach places. It looks like i will end up having the bedliner done this weekend.

Looks good so far

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

The spray on bedliner is good but their "gallon bucket" version ****ing sucks. I went outside this morning to head to work and the bedliner ****ing washed off my frame from the dew. It never even dried. What the hell?!

I'm taking that shit back and using my $$ to buy a gallon of black rust stop paint from ace. It might wrinkle a little from heat under the hood but big deal. As long as it stays on and doesn't come off.

Hope to get that settled after work today (5pm) and get the backhalf done and pull the driverside spindle. and clean it so i can paint there.
If i can get it painted with 1 full coat today then it will just need one more coat tommorow then i can start taking parts off my truck and putting them on the frame.

Fixed that problem. It still is wet some but it's almost dry. I need to do a second coat tommorow and get in the spots where the roller wouldn't go. I have pics but can't post until i get my camera tommorow.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

The frame will be covered completely. I am finishing up with another coat in places where the roller will go and getting the rest with a brush. If there's a place where i can't get with the roller or brush,i have a full can of spray on liner that can get it

I don't plan to leave any spots. I'm mostly concerned about the back of the frame because when it's back on the road and i get to do a tilt bed (After bagging the back) i want my frame to look good when i tilt it.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Been kneeling/squatting/sitting for about an hour painting so i'm taking a break for a bit. I've almost finished bedlining the frame except:

*Inside of frame-rails
*Misc. places on outside of frame-rails
*Front section of the frame
*Control arms (Yes,even the control arms)

I hope to get a lot of it done today:

*Install leaf springs,blocks,and axle
*Install motor mounts + Engine/transmission
*Install bag setup
*Install gas tank and fuel/brake lines

That will knock out most of it and will let the frame have 4 wheel on it instead of being propped up with pallets (No jackstands....) Then i can worry about getting the cab off (Which will be a bitch) and putting it on and plugging up all the wires. If i can just get the motor mounts bolted to the new frame then that's fine. I can put the motor on Tuesday or so.

I've done some of it on my blazer. I admit the blazer was hacked since it was my first vehicle but i learned from messing around on it.

Got the rear done good enough to put on the rear end. I need to touch up some places where i messed it up trying to get the leaf spring in (What a bitch) but it's all good. I have the gas tank on my truck unhooked but i need to pull it out tommorow and put it on the new frame. The rear end off my try is already on the frame. I've got the leaf springs on but i need to tighten the nuts down on them. Also my u-bolts are loose so i definately need to go under there and torque them down. I need to put my tire on too. I have one of the blazer tires on the rear axle for now until i can get my other tires off my truck.

I don't have my camera right now because i just got done working on it and i haven't been to my girlfriend's to pick up the camera yet. I'll post some pics tonight when i get home from her house.

Tommorow i plan to have the gas tank on the new frame, the leaf springs and u-bolts tight, brake and fuel lines ran,and MAYBE the bag setup along with the spindles and brake calipers.

I never thought about that
It's actually red primer but the flash makes it look orange. My girlfriend mentioned coming over to help today so i might let her do those tight spots on the frame with bedliner while i tighten down the rear end and attach the gas tank and fuel/brake lines.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Got my gas tank off and managed to put a ****in hole in it when the jack fell over and the truck/jack landed on it. My tank is the 20 gallon version but i'm going to use the 13 gallon tank out of the donor truck and just put my fuel pump in it since it's been replaced.

I have to clean the inside of the 13 gallon tank and siphon out the remaining 19-20 gallons out of my tank. I can swpa fuel pumps then install the gas tank tommorow. I didn't get to tighten up the leaf springs and u-bolts so i will do that tommorow when i install the fuel and brake lines. My girlfriend got the rest of the front with bedliner while i was removing the gas tank. I know it's a pretty important part but damn,do they really need that many bolts to hold the ****er on?

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Being skinny comes in handy

13 gallon tank bolted on. I need to try and level it out though...i'm pretty sure it shouldn't sit like that.

Looks like the 13 will clear and not hang below the frame?

Left side apart. I need to remove the shock and coil them clean it up and bedline it.

How my yard looks right now...

I have one bolt left holding the rear brake line to the frame that i couldn't get off but i hope to have it off tommorow after work. It's a bitch getting to it with the truck sitting on the ground but i can manage i think...

I thought about something like you want but i was going to cut a hole in the bed floor and put a stock gas door at the rear and have my filler neck connected to the bed floor. After shaving the raised sections on the floor of course.

I'm just going to shave my gas door though and shorten my filler neck because i plan to make a tilt bed so i can fill up that way.

I need to get that bolt off and take the brake line and bolt it on the new frame and straighten that gas tank tommorow after work. I'll get the fuel and remaming brake lines first then by the weekend i hope to have motor mounts on and have my engine on the frame.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

If i make my deadline of November 9 for having the truck back together and on the road,i will be attempting my goal of having the rear bagged by Christmas. I might go ahead and buy $2 worth of spraypaint and spray the leaf springs until then but i don't know because if i make that second goal then my leaf springs won't be on for much longer anyway. Eventually i will paint my rear axle but not right now. I'm more concerned with getting it back together, bagged, and on the road.

Painting the axle is a minor detail right now.

Re: My newly acquired truck! =]

Fixed the gas tank and removed the shock and coil spring. Also loosened the last bolt holding the rear brake line on but my hands started hurting from the 38 degree temperature and also i don't want to get sick so i had to call it a night.

It will be warmer tommorow evening so i'll finish taking out that bolt and the rear brake line should come off then. If so i'll bolt it to the new frame and start removing some more brake/fuel lines.

Keep up the good work. If it makes you feel any better, my s10 is down for a few days. I drove it to work monday and it died on me a few times on the way....well I found out that it has no spark now, so I think my coil is bad. Always something with it...

That left rear wheel is off my blazer. The wheel against the tree is the one off my truck. I put the blazer one on so we could roll the rear axle across the yard to the frame. I'll be changing it out later but for now it does the job of supporting the frame.

I do need to tighten my u-bolts though. Your truck is posessed i think.

Your yard looks like a Swap meet. Coming along nicely though. I enjoy reading your thread and was sad to see the damage. Looks good though!
