Mo's 1993 Olds Achieva SCX W41

I found this car last week on Craigslist. After looking it over and talking to the owner for a bit I was able to pick it up pretty cheap. This car is one of 191 so its a pretty rare bird.

It's got upgraded cam gears, a Rocketparts chip, a brand new GM 1992 SCX spec head thats been ported, Sprint suspension springs(lowered 1.5"), front upper strut brace and lower cradle brace. There's probably a couple other things that are escaping me at the moment.
I bought the car from a GM part guy who bought it from a GM mechanic. Both work at the dealership where I picked the car up.

The car is pretty solid but there are a couple problem areas in the way of rust. Aside from that it's got a bunch of nickle/dime shit wrong with it. Tiny leak in the rad, the new(but wrong) AC compressor that the lines don't fit on, one power lock button works to lock and one works to unlock, a dash rattle, a slow passenger side window, some paint issues, the gas gauge is a bit off etc...

The biggest problems are that all the synchros grind a bit between gears and the ignition cylinder is wonky. I've already lined up a brand new trans but I suspect this one may currently have the wrong fluid in it so I'll give a fluid change a whirl before picking up the other trans. It's just kind of odd to me that it grinds briefly between every gear. Not like my past experiences with synchros gone bad. The trans by the way is a rarity in it's own right because of the gear ratios.

So...as of right now it's cold as shit, I have no room in the garage, no money for another project etc... My eventual plan is to fix it up and flip it for a profit to another enthusiast. Or a more likely scenario is....I get attached to it and keep it. Only time will tell.

Yez, that is sort of a rare bird.
Those quads were pretty hot, but the water pump ran on the timing gear chain under the cover. What a nightmare. I changed a few... like a 2 month long job... Ha.
W41 was totally the hot rod engine for those IIRC. 215 HPs?

Nice score Dood - as long as the rust issues aren't too bad.

Hopefully I don't ever have to mess with that. This one was 185 stock. It may be closer to 200 now, I'm not sure. Trans is a close ratio Getrag 282.

191? isnt that half of all achieva production? doesnt sound rare to me :P

just kididng. we may be related because I love high strung weirdo production 4 cylinder cars too. the quad4 was a nutso platform too, I think a lot of ohc engines still use some of the advancements

This will be my first FWD GM. I've always been a fan of late 80's early 90's FWD Mopars though. It'll be interesting to see how the GM stacks up. Factory redline on this one is 7200, now 7400 with the chip. I'm definitely not used to that. lol

It does need a black hood. And it was a MI car it's whole life. It's just been garaged and not driven in the winters.

I just went out and let it run for a bit while I was doing the snow. I love listening to the lopey idle it has. It's pretty loud too. I'm not crazy about that. It's kinda got that raspy sound like the 3.1/3.4/3.8's have. I'd hate to get rid of the OG factory stainless exhaust.

That's crazy. Those cars are so bad ass. Not as bad ass as the turbo III cars though IMO. I'va always wanted a 93 Daytona IROC R/T.

I do remember. Pretty sure A.J. Foyt drove that car to set some records.

Thanks dude. I been kinda slouching on buying the trans for it. Dudes got 4 left, there was 7 when I picked the car up. I haven't had any time to dick with the car. I'd hate to get the trans and then find out it just had the wrong fluid in it. All the bros here are telling me I should just buy it and if nothing else it'll have a 0 mile trans in it. I wouldn't mind rebuilding the old trans and throwing a diff in it.

Well, I changed out the trans fluid today and it didn't help. I did drive it for a while though. It drives really nice. It was a trip playing with the adjustable suspension while it was in motion. Night/day difference between soft and sport.

I did notice that the clutch pedal feels like absolute shit. It doesn't really have and resistance until it's close to the floor and it doesn't really return with any "umph", if that makes any sense. Now I'm wondering if the clutch is fully disengaging or disengaging slowly due to air in the hydros.

Re: Mo's 1993 Olds Achieva SCX W41

might be master/slave fluid related, the grossest brake fluid I have ever changed came out of a clutch master. lifetime fill, not.

could be broken or weak fingers on the clutch. I bought a 72 BMW that was stored on jacks and the guy had heard that the clutch disc might stick to the flywheel in storage so he pushed the clutch in with a broomstick. after 10 years the clutch didnt stick, but the fingers were weak and shifting was fun.

pull that trans! new clutch and trans and wooty woot around town.

is the rubber line between the master and the slave new? because old rubber brake line (I know its a clutch line) swells up sometimes and the actual tubing size gets really small and can resist pressure in and hold pressure coming back out. you know, like what you are describing.

I'm pretty sure it's that plastic line like the S10's use. I want to get out there and go over the hydros with a fine tooth comb but it's been about 10 degrees out lately.

Re: Mo's 1993 Olds Achieva SCX W41

I drove this thing the other day and almost got stranded in traffic because the ignition wouldnt stay in the run position....good times. Well, I mentioned the ignition being an asshole earlier and it was at it again. You should have seen me trying to steer, shift, and hold the key to the run position all at once. lol When I went to go drive it that day the radio wouldn't work, the wipers wouldn't work and the gauges were all glitchy. I drove it anyways and almost screwed myself. I suspected the ignition switch was the culprit which I confirmed today. I fired it up and everything was working fine so I started tapping the ignition and shit was going on and off, the guages were glitching out etc... You can't just start it either. To start it so that it stays running you have to start and then let the key back real slow or it'll just shut off.

Now I just need to get a wheel puller and some external torx sockets to remove the plastics from the column.

At least you've pretty much diagnosed the issue. It's not some mysterious phantom wiring issue. It is funny to picture you doing all those things at once though

This is going to sound un-American but I don't even have any.

I scored a Delco ignition switch for 35 bucks (60 everywhere else) and some crapsman external torx shits for 5 bucks. Ebay ftw again. They should get here today and tomorrow.

Little tip for weird part searching on ebay. I usually try to find GM part #'s and I'll search the just the # on ebay. 99% of the time you'll find whatever it is for buttcheap or close to it. It works that way for whatever make too really as long as you can track down OEM part #'s.

That's cool, Joe. My buddy had a 90 Z24 for a long time when we were younger. I always liked that car. It moved pretty good too.

Glad it plugs in at the switch and not the bottom of the dash like most I have dealt with. It's still pretty cold out so I'm not gonna mess with it until it gets a little warmer. I'm leary when it comes to messing with plastic interior parts when it's cold.

Sup dude? The car and I are still getting acquainted. So far even with all the quirks it's hard to not take a liking to the 7,000+ rpm pulls and the lopey idle. lol

POSS10 had a 2.3/5speed Grand Am and sent me videos of it way back when. I thought it was really neat.

I wonder if the Quad could be modded to fit in a Dime...

Looks like the intake and PS pump/belt drive would be a problem.

Absolutely. Quad4rods sells a bellhousing for the T5. The biggest hurdles would be exhaust and intake manifold fabrication. Believe me, the thought has been milling around in my head, even before I got the car. I'm sure you could probably find me mentioning it a long ass time ago in my S10 build thread. lol

In other news...I ordered the AC compressor delete pulley and the drivers side front trans mount. Slowly acquiring stuff.

BlueZQ8 and I were just talking about the fact that the S10s should have come with Quad 4s...

Nice snotty Quad4, water pump driven off the timing set really doesn't sound too awful, unless its in something with no room to work on.

Quad4 S10 was an idea I was thinking about too, lack of skills on my part. Olds did have a cool split grill.

Yeah, I don't think the 2.2/2200 should have ever existed. They should have went from the iron duke to the quad4 to the ecotec IMO.

Also, picked up a brand new trans and installed the AC delete pulley...

I picked up a steering wheel puller while I was at the Autorama so I'll probably go out tomorrow and mess with the ignition switch and maybe see if I can scrounge up the parts to fix the horn button while I'm in there.
