Re: Home made teardrop trailer

that looks amazing! how much do you suppose it will cost you at end? i know i can buy an old decent condition pop-up trailer for 1000 bucks.. but your model looks way nicer then them pop up trailers!

Re: Home made teardrop trailer

if you are still looking for the siding, since you live in birch run Mi go to the new General RV store. they can order the skin from a travel trailer for you rather cheap. I work at the one in Wayland (grand Rapids) and we get it in all the time.

Re: Home made teardrop trailer

awsome, i was gonna go there but i've been kinda busy and havent even thought about it. How cheap is "cheap" though? i'm looking for the smooth (not the one with the ridges) kind of siding. Thanks!

Re: Home made teardrop trailer

dident want yall thinking i quit or forgot about this project... just been busy/poor. I cut the door out and fitted the window. I cant do anything else this weekend because of my little sisters open house but soon as i can get crackin again, the other door is getting cut and the interior is getting done. Today I bought the siding for it too. I got some stuff super cheap. Its fiberglass FRP sheeting made for showers/kitchens and what not. One side has like little rain drops on it, one side is completely smooth, so we are gonna put the smooth side out and then paint it with automotive paint, cause its hella ugly. Its supposed to be almond, but its kinda irregular color.... thats why we got it so cheap. Home depot sells it for 30 bucks a sheet. Our small town lumber yard had it for 14.99 and the guy said we could have it for 10.99 because they were irregular, and if we thought we could use broken or damaged ones we could have em for half price 200 bucks later we were on our way... not bad considering i priced out UNFINISHED BARE aluminum at over 600 bones.
and of course, a pic. The door will be suicide, of course

Re: Home made teardrop trailer

Be carefull trying to paint that stuff, most of the time, I've seen somebody paint it in a house it starts peeling a short time. So make sure you find some good primer, that will bond to it.

Re: Home made teardrop trailer

Whoa, how could I have missed this thread??? Awesome project bro, I'm real curious to see how this thing turns out. I've actually been planning on starting a teardrop project for a while now. Mine will probably just be a 4x8, so I dont have to custom build a trailer frame. I noticed Harbor Freight has a 4x8 trailer kit on sale right now for $220, so once I get back home (outta town right now) I might end up picking one up and starting this project sooner than I planned. As for the paint job, I think the first flame idea would be cool, but I'd invert the colors so it'd be a black trailer with red flames. The two layer flame paintjob is an awesome idea as well.

the frame is actually from a pop up, so its not custom built. Downside=oddly sized, everything else IS custom built. Black i fear would make it WAAAYY too hot, plus i want it to match my truck but yeah, i'm a big guy, and i like my toys. so a 4x8 would have been WAY too small for me. This thing is 10 or 11 feet long and 6.5 feet wide

Re: Home made teardrop trailer

Good point about the black paintjob...you'd think I'd realize that due to the fact that I'm in southern mississippi right now in a black truck with no air conditioning lol. When I build mine, I'm probably going to mount a window-unit style air conditioning unit on the front wall of the trailer. I'm planning on mounting one or two group 29 deep cycle marine batteries, a battery charger, and a large power inverter in a compartment somewhere inside the trailer, which should be enough juice to power everything. Then if electricity is available, all I'd need to do is plug in a drop cord to power the battery charger. I'm sort of debating if a 4x8 would be big enough as well, since I'm 6'2" but it'd be hard to find a trailer frame any bigger without having to either rip apart another camper, or spend alot more money than I had planned on...

Re: Home made teardrop trailer

finally got some progress pics! the inside is fully paneled, except the very front of course. The outside is about half sheeted. I still have to put the doors on the cabinets on the inside and put the trim on. then after we finish putting the sheeting on the outside, we gotta glue on the final skin which is .90 frp fiberglass. almost there!

the sticks are just there to hold it while the glue dries...

naw no generator. I have one if i need one though... but nearly everywhere i go, i'll either have electricity, or i wont need it (other than the fridge, but you only need that if your staying extended periods of time, and you normally only stay extended periods of time if you have electricity) besides, i hate the drone of a generator.
