Darksiders Truck
![]() It’s that time of year again!! Time for me to take my S-10 and do something fun with it with a video game theme! Some of you may remember the Gears of War build Link to the Gears of War Build This year is going to be a bit different (I hope)… this time I’m going to use funds from my graphics business to float some of the cost, but for the most part it’s out of pocket, which I had to do because I don’t have enough groveling skill to convince my wife to let me spend over $1000 in lighting and electronics, and I may be able to squeak most of it by my business checkbook! So YAY! At any rate I’ll be leaving quite a bit of the truck like I did with the GOW build meaning I think I’m going to leave those cool hideous headlights in place… maybe… I don’t know. Part of me says yes, and another part of me says I should go down to the junkyard and find a butt-ugly front clip from something and weld that sucker in place. Either that or I should just glass something from scratch… I’ll see where the build takes me. So lets kick this piggy As you’ve gathered by the thread title, I’m going with Darksiders with the intent of making the Midnight launch on August 14th Lots to do and little time to do it in! Like all of my mods, there is very little design planning, I take the approach that what I’m working on will lead me where it needs to be, still there are always some aspects that have to be planned out. I started with a piece of leftover poster board from another project, and I cut it out in the shape of the new mask that I believe War will be wearing. ![]() Next I sculpted out the shape in duct tape (real duct tape, not the pvc silver that you’re used to associating with the name). ![]() Next I got an idea of how it will fit on the hood (not bad at all) ![]() The next step is one of the only that is a matter of planning, I’m going electronic with this vehicle sculpture, time to dust off some friends… ![]() What you don’t know yet is that this may be your favorite part… the star of the show at night... ![]() These expensive little suckers represent almost half of my budget for the truck, they are that important. I started laying the body with silver duct tape (the real stuff used for ducts), adding in texturing as I went. ![]() Then I started to migrate to the hood, adding in War’s mask that I created last week ![]() I finished texturing out the hood ![]() What you don’t see is the glassing (because it looks almost the same), after I textured out the hood in silver duct, I encapsulated everything in several layers of fiberglass. After everything was textured and glassed I then threw on a silver wash ![]() I repeated with the sides, this is a taped & textured side pic with glassing. ![]() Then I finished out the back ![]() …and here’s my current stopping point showing the drivers side base texture in place, sealed, and painted. ![]() I have a lot more parts on the way, and a ton more to do, however with the holiday around the corner I have no clue how far along I’ll get things this week. More to come! |

Re: Darksiders Truck
I weep for humanity.
Edit: As long as you enjoy it, thats all that matters. But aren't you worried about it blinding the absolute hell out of someone? Or attracting light/heat? |

That "mask" looks just like a dick and balls. Just so you know.

"What in the world? It's like leftovers. " - haha! I thought the same thing at first! I wanted the underlayment to look pruneie
"That "mask" looks just like a dick and balls. Just so you know." - I'd hate to see the results of your Rorschach test ![]() "I weep for humanity." - On a funny note, I've already got someone suggesting I register it with the Burning Man DMV "nice tires" - Thanks! Cooper Discoverer STT's |

Re: Darksiders Truck
The randomness of your build makes me chuckle. As was with the gearz truck this one i am looking forward to seeing, as well as the next transformation.

Re: Darksiders Truck
I was going to start wiring up the lights, but I decided to triple check my math… I’m very glad I did! My driver setup was waaaaay off! I have no clue what I was thinking! But if I had let it ride I would have blown out over $200 in lights!
I have new drivers in route, but I want to get the passenger side & roof done before I start working on them. On another Darksiders note.. I don’t know if that symbol thingee is going to be in the game or not… and without a demo to exploit… I mean “research”, I guess I’m going to have to set my own tune to play to. So I’ve decide that making War’s mask for the hood sculpture was pretty fun, so why not create a decal? I started with half of the shape ![]() Then I cut out the eyes ![]() And booya! ![]() War’s Mask! I'll be giving these away launch night! Moving back to the truck... I textured out the right front quarter panel ![]() Then I glassed it, but when I glassed this part I made sure to add in the booger texture like I did on the hood ![]() Then I base coated it ![]() Next I started on the door, and I had started to cut out the extended cab window, but then I wondered why I even cared? I liked it covered! ![]() So I went back to the drivers side and textured it as well ![]() Then I base coated my work after I glassed it ![]() ![]() I ran out of tape for the 3rd time, so before running out for more, I started to hit the primary black ![]() Then I hit the store and got another roll, textured and glassed it ![]() Let's not forget the roof! ![]() Which I also painted to keep with the theme (even though no one will ever see it) ![]() With the rear based painted, I hit it with the black ![]() Now for the reason I went with silver as a base... I was going to use black paint to "wash" away some of the silver ![]() It worked well in theory, but in reality I ended up painting all of the textures by hand, it took forever! Here's the hood ![]() And a few more shots ![]() . ![]() ![]() The truck is roughly 30% complete at this point. I spent the rest of the night base wiring several hundred lights ![]() The truck had been sitting at the same point for a couple of frustrating weeks now... mostly because I hit a huge wall with the lights. I had bought some fairly pricey electronics to go in it, only to nearly set the truck on fire. So if fancy shmancy electronics wont cut it... then I'll just make them myself. I started running my caterpillar lines ![]() I started stringing out my trees ![]() Here's a cleaner shot (you're looking at an eye... this will make sense later) ![]() I threw together a main line squid, as you can see I'm designing it to tap into the trailer light plug (that I installed in the previous build) ![]() Then I had to daisy chain a hundred lights ![]() Now before I can go on with the lights, I need to get the body ready, I started with the hood by ripping up paper and turning it into a "skin" to go over the body ![]() ![]() I need some cloth for backing... quite a bit of it. I started to tear up old clothes, some of them I kept the art... ![]() After backing with resined cloth, I started to form fit the pieces ![]() ![]() The weather was kind to me today... so I worked as much as I could while I had the chance! I ran my electrical tracing into the fiberglass and secured it in place ![]() Next I ran the eyes electronics into the sockets ![]() After getting the electronics in there like I wanted, I hit a wall of how do I "fill" the eyes? I saw some stuff at Menards that would do the trick, but it was way too expensive (and I'm already extremely over budget), and it's too clear. I need semi opaque. When I make my Caffy (coffee taffy), or Buzzbears (energy shot gummie bears) I have a cast iron frying pan I use exclusively for the task because it makes an amazing diffuser, today I had to sacrifice it for the good of the project. I bought one of those 50 packs of glue sticks and melted them down all at once. ![]() Then I filled the eye sockets up with melted glue ![]() Over the next 12 hours secured the "skin" to the hood, detail painting it, running tracings and integrating the wiring into the truck. Let's we're skipping to the cool part, here is the result of that labor, the eyes ![]() My camera doesn't work very well in the dark, but here is a shot of what the body looks like with the skin lights ![]() Now that I have a taste, it's time to step up more parts... I glassed on the panels ![]() ![]() ![]() and then I started with the base black ![]() working on the hood has taught me the error of my ways, so I'm refining the way I do the rest of the body panels There is still so much to do in such a very short period of time... while the game is coming out in a couple of weeks, I only have 4 more days I can work on the truck because like an idiot, I've agreed to work over time at the office... which will put me working a 70 the week before launch. I had honestly expected to be done by now, the two week delay due to electrical really put a hurting on things, I'm not sure how I'm going to make up the time, but I'm going to give it one hell of a try! |

Not something that I would do to my truck, but I applaud your effort in doing something different and creative. |

Re: Darksiders Truck
Now with the Gears of War theme gone and the notion of a Boomer out of my head all I can think of is the Family Truckster ![]() and can't help but to grin like crazy! It's so awesomely hidious!! I was going to change it out to something a little more wicked, but it's far too cool! Moving right along... I spent all night wiring, but the yeild was one completed panel, 6 more to go. It takes quite a bit longer than I thought it would, but I'll take what I can get. ![]() A commen thing that I hear A LOT about the truck is the lack of a rear bumper. I hear that it looks "unfinished" quite a bit. So I took a break from wiring to work on it. I decided that I just wanted a flat board bumper, something I can put a logo or some nonsense on. So I cut out a board ![]() I glassed it so that it matched the rest of the truck, but also because I wanted runny little danglies hanging . ![]() I know you can't really see the danglies, but they are there. It's subtle. Less is more and all that. I gave it a scrape paintjob to match the skin. ![]() The rest of the day I spent tearing and forming skin panels then glassing them. ![]() This is my halting point for the week. There is still so much to do and only a few days to accomplish it in! |
