I'm in no hurry to get it going because I still have no motor. I'm not flintstoning it around.
I have a Blazer that I drive daily so I bought this to spend time on so I had something to work on but didn't have to worry about doing small stuff to it so I could drive it as well.

Right now I plan to run the factory motor out of the truck I may get. If I don't get it then I have a few ideas. Not going to go back with what was in it that is for sure.
I'm concentrating on getting the body straight right now. The motor is not even on the to do list as of right now. I'll work on that after the body is further along unless I finally talk to the guy about the orange truck.

I got the truck with no motor or trans. The motor mounts that were built are junk. I'm going to cut them off the frame sometime soon and grind it smooth.
I want to be able to drive it and get halfway decent gas mileage so I'll drive it more.

By the way. If you want to see a big list of the pics I have taken during the build, click the word LUV in my sig. I have not posted all of the pics I have taken so far.
Made it huge so everyone would see it.

Re: Bodydropped 78 Chevy LUV...

Took a better pic of the bed. I got the rest of it down at the top after this was taken...

Before I started tearing into the side...

This probably looks really funny, but I did it on the other side and it worked well to tell me where the high/ low spots were. I Used a wide flathead that has a sharp point and a hammer and worked diagnal downward chipping the filler away to find the fossils underneath...

A couple of the bigger pieces I pulled off the bedside...

Showing the areas that came off really easy...

Yum...

Most of the bed down. It will be finished next time I work on it...

I decided to go with a wire wheel instead of a sanding disk on this side. It takes about the same amount of time to get it down and I dont have to come back and smooth it out afterwards...

The filler for the blinker on the back corner of the bed...

it looks like someone took a golf club to most of that truck. how are you going to fix all them little dents with minimal bondo?
and i cant beelive he could drive that truck without the bed sides of bondo falling off.

Re: Bodydropped 78 Chevy LUV...

awesome progress! and I have started working on mine again thanks to your inspiration... today im going to get my drille and a change of clothes on my lunch break so that right after work i can go straight to the shop and work on my truck for an hour or so before we play poker... wednesday night poker night

going to wire wheel some parts of the cab and start taking down the bondo on my right bed corner where it was once wrecked and fixed with pure bondo... goin to attempt to fix myself by using kitty hair/a lot stronger and then bondo/filler putty.... atleast enough to make me happy for this show season....

last night i block sanded more on teh cab and primed some spots where it was bare... block sanded on the doors and found a low on the driver side...

ill link you to some pictures tommorrow if i remember... working on a full size long bed = 5x more work

I'm going to straighten the bedside with a dolly, hammer, and a pin gun. Hopefully I can get the big areas out enough to straighten them. I'm not just going to slap bondo back on it and call it done. There were up to 7-8 layers in some spots of primer, paint, filler, primer, filler , filler, filler, paint, glaze, primer, paint. I will go look for one of the pieces that has alot of layers. I wish I would have started the 5 gallon bucket filling with the big pieces when I started on the other side. It would have been filled by now.

Glad to see that I inspired someone. That was my intention of posting soooo many pics and explaining pretty much everything I'm doing and why I'm doing it. i have always liked seeing people let you know everything they are doing on such a big build, so I figured I should go all out with pics and all.
I'm actually using a grinder and a flat wire wheel. A cup on a drill will not work as well because I'm using the side of the wheel most of the time to get the most use of it and not have it wear away at an angle. Did you see the pic of the last wheel I went through??? I have one before it that was not nearly that bad. I'm going to take a pic of a new one I have next to the two used ones to show just how much use I got out of them.
How bad is the dent on your corner that you are going to fix? Is there any way for you to pull it? It would be much better if you pulled it out at least some and tryed to get some of it's shape back before filling it.
After seeing how bad this was and attempting to startt blocking it at first I will most likely never just block sand and paint another used vehicle that I have no clue as to what is hiding underneath. I blocked the Blazer and sprayed it because it still had the factory paint, but I'm going to redo it as soon as the luv is ready for a break and is driveable.

Get me the links for the pics. I love seeing pics of peoples work.

I'm trying. This bed may not be used afterall. That is if I can get another one really cheap. I'm going to cut the taillight fillers out and try to find some factory taillights to see just how hard it will be to get them to fit again.

Re: Bodydropped 78 Chevy LUV...

This thread and Avtekk's thread should be sticky'd, it'll be a race, which takes longer? rebuilding a Peice with roughly 6 gallons of filler? or SFBD from scratch on who knows what the final product will be? I'm sure both of your guys' work is going to turn out superb! Have either of you had feature trucks? just curious.

I'm stripping the entire truck down, redoing all of the suspension, body work, poaint reshaving everything, redoing all of the interior, redoing all of the bodydrop, and adding alot of metalwork into the rebuild. He will kick my ass on getting his done. There is no doubt about that. He is on a deadline, I'm not. I have no deadline for when mine will be done. I'm in no hurry to get it done, I'm just working on it when I can and as much as I can. After the body is done it should go by alot faster because what will take time on the rest will be planning not actually doing hands on work.

About having a feature truck...
No I have not ever had one, but I plan on having one by the time I feel like thi truck will get a break. I have a few plans for it, but going by the shape it is in I'm not going to make any major permanent plans for it because alot of things I am running into are unexpected.

its sad when the bondo you pull off a truck can fill a bucket. Pretty good idea to put it all in a bucket it will give some perspective to how much you are pulling off.

The bad thing is the filler is just from the area around the taillights, the "chevrolet" and where the plate box used to be, and some of the passenger bedside. The rest of it was shavings from using a wire wheel.

I hope this isnt another project like a saw awhile ago when a fella on teh forum was re doing his first gen from the ground up... he put an assload of work and money in it just too end up parting it out after he had the rolling chassis due to getting tired of it. It would be a shame to see you fall under the same kind of thing..because youve got alot on your hands and alot of plans... Id love to see this thing done someday man.

Been watching this from the beginning, soon as my 2nd gen project is done Im going to look into getting a luv or similar year mazda to play with. Your making lots of good progress, keep up the good work. Id hit the guys up over at LUVtruck.com and see if maybe they have some info on where you could score some new bed sides for cheap. http://www.luvtruck.com/

Been on there for a couple weeks. Wicked Mayhem told me about the site and I registered. There is a salvage yard about 6 miles away from me that has alot of luv's. I may just try to find one somewhere around here if the guy with the orange one does not come through.
