Re: Bodydropped 78 Chevy LUV...

I worked on it yesterday...
more done to the floor and back wall
more to the door jam on the drivers side
More done around the vin number on the firewall
went over some of the drivers side.
There was no point to take pics of what I got done because it was spread out. I'll take pics when I get the rest of the floor and back wall done, then some of the doors when they are bare, and some of the firewall.

Re: Bodydropped 78 Chevy LUV...

Went to town with the wire wheel on the drivers side tonight. I got alot of it smooth and got the rest of the pits clean that were filled with body filler...

Most of the floor and back wall is done. There are a few parts that I cannot get to with the wire wheel, so I'm going to have to sand them...

Worked on the cowl and the top of the firewall, I got alot of it done. I'm going to have to move a few things to finish it and move down the firewall further...

Re: Bodydropped 78 Chevy LUV...

looks like your makin good progress with the cleaning process... how many wires wheels you go thru so far? Since your spending all this time on cleaning everything... have you ever thought of taking the truck and just getting it dipped? that removes everything! There wont be a speck of rust on it anywhere

I thought about it but that would require me to get someone to haul it and it would be a pain because the angle of my driveway, i have alot of the air ride unhooked because it is getting redone, and I am cheap and like doing it myself. That would be a good way to get it done, but I'm hard headed and would rather do it the hard way. I'm on my second wire wheel currently. I used a sanding disc on most of the drivers side, but I'm going to use a wire wheel the rest of the way for sure. I get alot of wires stuck in me from flying off, but it is worth it because it just keeps geting shinier.

I thought about that. The body is really wavy, it is going to take a while to get it smooth. I may do that after I get it smooth.

Re: Bodydropped 78 Chevy LUV...

Finally an update. I figured it was time to clean the garage really good and get alot of the stuff sitting around moved out into my near empty storage. I moved the truck over and cleaned up, moved alot of stuff out, then spun it around so it was facing the other way on the same side so I can start on the passenger side. I took alot of close ups of the suspension and alot of sots under the truck in places I cannot see very well just to see what kind of shape everything is in. I did not find anything I did not know about already, so that is good.

After I moved the truck to the other side of the garage showing the huge pile of crap left underneath, and the parts lining the wall and in a big pile in the back of the garage...

Passenger filler plate. It was tacked in a little closer to the surface, but was too far in and not cut as close as I'd like it to be. It will be easier to cut out...

Showing that the body work was done really well. It hid alot, which is shown in the third pic...

Showing off some of the 4 link with upside down mounted shocks...

Showing that the firewall was not welded at all. It is held together with pop rivets and silicone...

The hood. It is the factory steel hood with part of a fiberglass cowl matted to it...

Turned around in the garage ready to be finished. I hate night pics with this camera...

Re: Bodydropped 78 Chevy LUV...

They are pretty bad in person.
Plus I just have to know what is lurking beneath. The bed has alot of dents showing on the inside, so I know there are a few thick layers of filler on the bedside.

Re: Bodydropped 78 Chevy LUV...

Here's what you call using a wire wheel It was a 6 inch...

Big chunk I pulled off the corner...

Layers upon layers gone. It's too bad they put the crooked license box in it. I could have kept the "chevrolet" on the gate. The passenger side light filler was done the exact same way. And the led's looked soo bad I broke them out. I'll do something different with the lights...

Showing the plate box filler...

Showing the welds holding the factory rollpan. The factory hinges on the bottom of the gate that were ground down. And the few tack welds that were holding the gate to the rollpan...

Another crappy night pic. I'm going to try to keep the garage and truck a bit cleaner from now on, so I cleaned out the area between the truck and the wall so I can sweep it out along with the other side of the garage...

I also put it on jackstands a bit higher this time so it is easier to get the rockers down when I get to them, and not have a huge pile of crap on the floor under the truck.

Think of it this way. I have to make new brackets for the bags on the front. I can get away with the rear setup for a little bit just trailering it to a couple shows until I get wheels for it. I have to seld up half of the cab and the firewall to finish what should have been done with the bodydrop. I have to make new floorpans from the seats forward on both sides. I have to section the trans crossmember to let it lay out another inch so the bed lays. I have to straighten the body and prime it. And I have to get a motor/ trans and rewire everything. And I'm going to re-shave everything and shave alot of stuff while I'm at it. That is what I plan on getting done in the next couple months. I'm doing everything in stages to make it go by faster and not waste time doing multiple things at a time.
When it is done in stages it is not that big of a deal. I'm working on it at my house so I don't have to go far to work on it.

And who was it that predicted earier that you'd find the chevy letters on the gate? Did ya find any thing else out about that orange truck? it would be sooo much nicer to just use that bed probably. So how much weight ya think the truck has lost to far in just bondo... This thing is going on a serious diet.

Try to get the upper brackets up a little more if possible, to try and get the links a little more parrellel with each other at ride height. Amazingly, the side to side angle that the uppers are at seems to be pretty good atleast.

And who was it that predicted earier that you'd find the chevy letters on the gate? Did ya find any thing else out about that orange truck? it would be sooo much nicer to just use that bed probably. So how much weight ya think the truck has lost to far in just bondo... This thing is going on a serious diet.
The link bars were put on with no worries of pinion angle. With it raised up all the way the pinion angle is at zero. All the way down, it is bad I have not looked to see what it was, but I'll get a pic of itto show how off it was. The driveshaft rubbed in at least 5-7 places because it was off soo bad. I planned on changing the upper bars before looking at it closer., but I'm probably going to go ahead and redo the upper and lowers. It did get some mean side to side action, but with it not getting much lift it was only about 7 inches or so.
I still have not talked to the guy about the orange truck. I'm hgaving to pay a few things that I did not know were going to come up, so I'm not going to spend too much on it for a little bit. The orange truck isn't going anywhere and will hopefully be less needed for him the longer I wait. This bed is pretty bad, as soon as I start straightening it I bet I'll talk to the guy and have something fresh to start with. That would make doing all of this work pretty funny. I'll keep this bed no matter what just to have a spare so I can shave everything and not have to worry too much about taillights or storage in it.

As far as weight. I know when I got it it was one heavy bish to push up my steep driveway. I had no way to weigh it, but as soon as it is rolling again I'll do the push it up the driveway test and see if it is easier= ghetto . It weighed more than my 96 ext cab S10 with no motor/ trans, so I knew something was going on with it. I don't plan to use much filler at all, but I'll have to use some because I cannot get behind some of the panels with a dolly to straighten them, and a pin gun can only do soo much. I do know that every hole will be welded up and there will be no extremely high/ low spots on it requiring up to 1/2 inch od filler. I started ti fill up a bucket from the pieces I chipped off the rear. I'm going to do the same on the passenger side, but I'm only chipping off a reas about 4 inches apart down the side to see how thick it is. I did this on the other side and it worked well fo letting me know just how thick the filler was on it.

Fill'er up with the classic pink bondo. That will always be the best way to do it.
I.m going to have fun with filling them in. I'm most likely going to cut them out from top to bottom and all the way across and make a filler piece for them. Then make a filler for the crap that was supposed to fill the hole that was cut to fill the plate box. They will be welded flush and grinded down so they will look factory. None of that hold it up to the back side and tack them in in a few spots.
