Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

Not the update i want to bring you guys.

So i walk out of a store that i serviced and i see this......

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

so i looked around the parking lot while waiting for police, maybe the vehicle that hit me parked elsewhere..... well while doing the police report this older lady in her 60s comes by and says if this just happened. i say yes and she told me she saw a guy in an orange car with a cowboy hat that appeared to be mad at something and pushed a shopping cart as hard as he could into my truck and/or general direction. i saw the said cart a few spots away....yup. this did it.

so here is the thing. parked in the area that had no cameras and the guy who did it parked in the same area.

BUT with his cowboy hat not being common and this a small grocery store, they can review the tapes and find the cowboy hat within the hour time span i was in the store, and if he paid with a credit card (which i hope he did) his ass is mine.

got home and tried to push it out.

now it looks like a door ding...which i can live with...but i am thinking about bed-lining the bottom half of the truck....still up for debate. opinions?

after this me and a few buddies when wheeling. major stress reliever.

got a few more pics, but nothing fancy. we just went though a few trails and that's it. got dark on us fairly quickly.

i have duplicolor spray on bed liner around my truck, pay 10 dollars a can for it and it still faded like it was its job, chipping comes when the painting surface is not preped enough.

Have you called a PDR guy out to check it out?

They can probably get the rest of the dent out for a little cash. Better than painting it, if you're gonna bedline it anyway.

so here is continuing of the "updates" from that day. just got busy so i put them off.

not surprisingly the new offset wheels sling more mud everywhere...yay? kinda sucks as to know i have to keep the windows up, or just not spin tires. we didnt go mudding for maybe 30 minutes or so last time, usually we spend a good portion of the day out there.

tailgate was spotless.

later the next day after washing the underside that night, i finished up cleaning the truck. the wheels were not too bad to clean, but took more attention then the stock ones.

i need to get some new paint on the flares, i have been putting it off for a while... notice the "ding" on the door is not terribly noticeable. i got lucky.

Interesting thing about mud. it actually CLEANS the tires. i guess why not when you have millions of rock particles scraping away at the sidewalls. it gets rid of any stains the tires accumulate. also i had a mild scuff from when i accidentally curb checked but now that is gone too. no armor all and they shine!

i even gave some attention to the sonoma and drove it around for a good bit in the mountains. it wasnt started for 22 days

on the bed liner topic, i cant decide . i was even considering plastic dip on the bottom to see. for a black truck, hell yeah. but for blue/black? not sure. already rocking a blue and black theme, but i think the bedliner will be too much black with not enough blue, and a color matched bedliner will be kinda odd IMO.

just going to have to wait and see.

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

so here is what my stock radio looked like before. the 1 and 4 numbers were burnt out at first, but then more lights burned out. also the 4x4 panel wasn't lit up, i recently added a small bulb in there for the time being.

4mm wrench pictured.... mini vice grips were used.

some fancy wire bending i had to do.

each led had to have its own unique bend due to the radio design.

back of the radio.

hardly any room to work. looks spacious until you put the front cover on and notice that the button moldings prevent where you can put the resistor. i should have used 1/4 watt instead of 1/2.

tolerances are close, but not touching.

4x4 panel i already "fixed" with a normal bulb. led replaced it. (not led below)

finished product.

with my phone its hard to tell the blue from the green display.

all the bulbs that were removed.

so small update, but really enjoy the new change.

So the fronts are basically clear...

Always thought they had a green tint to them. I guess its just the incandescent bulbs. Thats pretty cool. I'd like to do the same with my 4x4 light/HVAC/Instrument panel, except in red. I think my soldering skills are good enough now. lol.

^do it!

did my tape deck today. i was going to get a non tape deck console and throw the tape deck below it out of sight...but decided to keep it and pimp it out instead.

Much simpler so i just bent the resistors wherever due to a ton of room.

The HVAC is next! but doing something special for it

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

man, been slacking for the HVAC. i do have something special planned for it, i just need to get one and tear it apart then swap it. i dont feel like modding mine just yet for something that may or may not work.

so to keep your mind off it i did other stuff.

i disabled the DRLs, found out the relay for the zr2 is located under the brake pedal under the rubber insulating foam. since the Zs use full low beams for DRLs. ended up cutting the center yellow wire and heat shrinked the ends.

with that disabled it allows me to upgrade the wiring with the relay mod. took a bit of time but i completely unwrapped the stock wiring and installed the 10 gauge in the factory wire loom then taped everything up.

wire comparison. i am still amazed that GM used such a small gauge for headlights.

installed some silverstar ultras as well to get rid of the stock lighting. so not only did i gain output from using silverstars, but also from the increased voltage the bulbs will now be seeing. when i did this on my sonoma the voltage is ~12 volts at the pigtail. after this mod the voltage is ~14 and does not drop in comparison to battery voltage.

the Z on the left, and my mom's 2010 Mercedes C300 with stock HIDs on the right.

Her HIDs have a nice cutoff line but my lighting kinda bleeds to that side. still a vast improvement over stock as my stock lighting was....well stock. color temp wise i would guess around 5000K.

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

nope, i replaced BOTH sides. replacing the hot will still limit the bulbs, though help.

i did a writeup a while back. and my soldering skills improved a ton since then the concept is the same on any vehicle or application. i recommend using a weather resistant socket/led as i did not and had problems 2 years later or mount the relay in the engine compartment. i did on the Z because the s10 grill sucks to remove. so its mounted on the battery, in fact zip tied to the trans cooler hard line using the built in bracket on the relay. its a perfect location as its easy to reach, yet not permanently mounted so its not in the way.

I was glad you did the headlight wiring upgrade write up. It drastically improved my headlights' output.

Procrastination has carried me this far in life, it will carry me to my grave, and hopefully put that off as well.

A friend of mine has an early 2000s Nissan Sentra (POS) that the headlight wiring is 20 or 22 gauge...

Blew my mind that it was THAT thin. He tried to splice into it for something and it broke right though.

HIDS are the greatest haha I have them in everything and wouldnt change them for the world, However your upgrade did a HUGE improvement in visibility so great job! The wiing is so small its crazy from factory. Makes you wonder wtf were they thinking? lol Great job, Now lower those damn lights lol, They are high as hell blinding everybody The Sylvania silverstar ultras are IMO the best halogen bulb. They make the ZXEs but they are garbage IMO. Great job, Badass truck...Rant done

HIDs are great, but in the stock housings it does throw light everywhere...properly aimed though its not too bad.

the reason why i dont like HIDs is simply for the fact that if a bulb or ballast burns out, i have to order one and wait, where as i can always stop by any auto parts store and grab a silverstar or something for temp replacement. The height of the headlights are stock, its just the way the truck sits on the driveway and the fact i was fairly close tho the garage door.

wire yours then, you will be more than happy with the output, but IMO not worth using stock bulbs.

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

I guess it depends on the kit really. I have always used stock housings and never had any issues just great results. Knock on wood but Ive had my HIDs in my civic the longest, going on 4 years with no issues and my driver side housing leaks in the winter lol. You can always put a stock bulb in if one goes out though. Just unplg the HID and instal the oe bulb. I always have kits on hand cuz I sell them locally for people so I have an unfair advantage lol

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

Silverstars are horrible IMO, those burn out allot faster than the stock bulbs and for what they cost I'd rather get a HID kit (actually cheaper) with a lifetime warranty. (Knock on wood) I've had DDM kits in all my cars/trucks and motorcycle for 5+ yrs with not one single hicup. Yes they suck for oncoming traffic in the stock housing but I aim mine down slighty to try and not be that as*hole.

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

Muddin97, i'm painting the flares the same color....sorta. black night metallic. according to a few threads on zr2usa its a very close match, just a tad darker.....but blue/black goes good together so why not? its not a black, but a dark gray.

anyways here is the color match. this is on the front grille shell.

and on the flare.

so today i bought... i didnt want to run out of paint, so overkill isnt bad. also have other uses for it. total, $60. sandpaper i already have, but needed more anyways.

starting now!!!! i already painted a part of a lower fan shroud. i did 180 grit, and 400, sanded them in both random, and even patterns, also left a spot with no sanding, painted the whole thing and then keyed the hell out of it to test which is better, 180, or 400? more importantly i couldn't see the 180 grit scratches. of course the test spot without any sanding did poorly for adhesion... i did this just to test it out as these flares will see mud/rocks of course so testing was necessary.

so doing something different....i'll post updates as i go, instead of one big update

the whole truck is going to be masked off. also i am keeping the rubber on the flares, not painting it for a few reasons.

Pain in the ass. Using a razor to cut along the rubber flare gasket. Now it's time for sanding.

All 4 done. needs more masking along the paint, but hey, its a work in progress

Re: Bean's New Dip {PROJECT ZR2}

Man, im WAY too focused on stuff...i didnt even make dinner so 14 hours without food.

anyways, i'm done. im SO glad i decided to do this as i was getting sick of how crappy the flares looked like. Going to peel off the masking tape slowly tomorrow. with 3 coats of rustolium, and 3 coats of clear the flare and the tape have "fused". right now the paint is too sticky to try. dry to the touch, but not cured. so if anything tomorrow i just need to use a razor and cut along the tape line carefully. hope i dont....never really painted anything to this extent involving taping something off.

so here it is all fully taped up. this metallic gets everywhere so i dont want any overspray or floating particals... right now i look like i came from a strip club, i am freaking covered in metallic glitter

the plastic worked out great! buddy said it was overkill, but i think professional is a more accurate description. well, the masking tape looks like shit

I BRING TO YOU! shitty cell pics! this was the 3rd night black metallic coat.

so, i did 3 coats of rustolium night black metallic, 1 light, and 2 semi heavy. waited approx 10 minutes between coats.

clear i did 2 light coats and 1 heavy coat. i can always sand and buff these to a mirror shine, but honestly there isnt any orange peel, but rather a texture to the clear. it matches the stock as i dont want the flares to look better than the truck it has that right gloss finish to it.

durability wise i think it should withstand weather/sun pretty good. i did chipride-slow's upper door since the clear was peeling. it was a temp fix, at least it prevented it from looking like ass. his blazer isnt garage kept and has lasted a year and still looks like this.

wow...that isn't a bad color at all...I may end up doing that to my flares/bumperettes, and grille? my grille isn't faded any, but i wouldn't mind it matching up to the color of the flares, and maybe even spraying the bumpers with that also? or something close to it, out of a gun...
