91' S10 Restoration. Family Rebuild.

What's up guys! My name is Dillon and I'm from Murr-land! I just had joined the forum and i was siked to see all of these sweet pics of the rebuilds and everything else. I have been in love with S-10's ever since I was like 3 or 4. My dad started showing me pics of his first S-10. He had an 1982 4x4 and it was SWEET! I had then decided that I wanted a first gen S-10 and I wanted to restore one as my first vehicle. I bought the truck I was 15 so it was a great learning expierence and tons of fun. She is a 1991 S-10 Tahoe. It has a 2.8 V6 under the hood and a five speed on the floor. Here she is when I got her home.

The body was almost perfect as far as dent wise. Straight panels and everything else was good.

All the rust came from a oriental rug that the neighbors, of the old couple who passed away, put on top of the truck. The hood not so bad, the roof on the other hand was pitted sooooooooo bad.

Re: 91' S10 Restoration. Family Rebuild.

Now the work begins. Me and My Dad first started by redoing the whole front end with new tie rod ends and repacking all the bearings and such. New shocks, all the good stuff. It also needed to be done to pass inspection sooo...... Here some pics of the mechanical work.

Old exhaust. Rusted all to hell.

My dad also redid the rear in it too but I was at school when he did that and he didn't take any pics.

For some reason I wanted to put in my system before we did any of the cosmetic work so I went ahead and did that too. Just for fun.

I know the picture quality is poor but thats the only camera i had at the time. Sorry.

Next We Started on the deconstruction!

Re: 91' S10 Restoration. Family Rebuild.

looks like a great project. The body looks really good, especially the bed, I was expecting worse. How bad is the rust on the roof/hood? It looks like it's mostly surface.

Re: 91' S10 Restoration. Family Rebuild.

The Roof was pitted really bad but we sanded it all down. The hood was just surface rust. When we primed it you could still see the pits so we sanded it down some more and filled em in. you can barley see them now that the paint is on in it.

I was lookin at all the work you did to you S-10 and it looks amazingly great. I love the interior along with how good the outside forms all together. I want to convert my interior to the saddle color now that the exterior is all done.

Re: 91' S10 Restoration. Family Rebuild.

My dad and I were going to buy a set of used trussle benches to use but instead we made some. We had some left over wood from an old project and we used bolts, chain, and a pool floaty thing for the padding. Heavy as hell but they worked perfectly!

Cleaning the back glass was so much easier on those benches.

Then off comes the body panels.

The sanding and grinding did take a while but it was mos def worth it.

Here We Grinded the roof. I forgot how long it took and we were hoping it didn't rust to far down in to the roof.

Then My dad had sprayed some primer on where the hood and where the grille had been.

After all that was done we had sprayed the whole dang truck a panel at a time with eching primer.(sorry if the pictures are out of order.)

Then We Had Started The Major Sanding And Eching Primering.

Doors are Done!

And The Saga Continues!

Its all good man. I live down on the eastern shore side near ocean city. Theres not to many first geners down here. Just mostly 2nd gens. I have the rear emblem in my bedroom for sentimental value (sorry) but I do have original mirrors, 4 14in original trim rings, the original tail lights, and some other small mic. parts.

What stuff would you have to trade? I'm looking for some saddle color interior parts cause I would like to change the inside since I have finished all the cosmetic work. Just Wondering! Thanks.

Re: 91' S10 Restoration. Family Rebuild.

lol this looks all to familiar. Nice work man, the roof/hood looks great now. I can only imagine how much time you guys put into doing that.

When you took off the rear chevrolet decal how hard was that to do? I take it you were trying to save it. I plan on taking mine off in the very near future and I would like to do it with out ruining it. I'm just afraid if it creases at all it'll be ruined. Just curious what technique you used.

Also was it this rear decal on yours? or one of the newer ones.

anyways, looking forward to checking out more updates.

edit* thanks I appreciate that. The saddle/tweed interior is nice, the only negative is it's the most susceptible to fading from sun, out of all of the original interior colours.

Really I just pulled it off of the stock paint job. I just heated it up with my dads heat gun and i just pulled it off. My emblem is the newer chevy emblem. It says chevy all the way across. Mine had curled up but i put some cardboard boxes ontop of it and it flatened back out. I want to put it on a piece of diamond plate and hang it up in my room some time in the future. Back on the saddle, you said it fades a lot? Do you know any place where they sell original interior parts. LMC truck has all the stuff but its not original so...

I'm thinking about putting a 2 and 3 in drop in it. I have everything done but the suspension. I want to get some 17in rims and buy a leaf spring lowering kit with drop spindels in the front. I'm not into bags all that much, don't get me wrong there really cool, but i don't wanna tub out my bed and have to do all that work cause i use my bed alot.

Re: 91' S10 Restoration. Family Rebuild.

the only place I know of that sells original interior parts is junk yards lol. You can find pieces here and there on ebay. I've tried going to GM for pieces but they are all gone, every dealer in my province is sold out Yeah the saddle definitely fades over time, I'm talking like 10-20 years lol, but I mean in comparison with other colours it's very noticeable. It also becomes chalky and starts to deteriorate as well. My interior panels are at that point, particularly the door panels and a pillar pieces.

oh shit I forgot you are working on a early 90s truck, hey you might have better luck at GM then I did finding interior pieces from the first 3 years is getting really tough to do.

Instead of looking for just saddle pieces you can also grab other colours and paint them with the saddle paint from LMC. I just bought 2 cans of it and I'm going to do that this coming spring.

Re: 91' S10 Restoration. Family Rebuild.

You should be able to find saddle interior parts without too much trouble, sadly many people have put their s-10s to rest, the junk yards around here anyways are full of them, i would say the pull-a-part i was just at had about 30 first gens on the lot. Looks like a great project though, nice progress and stay on it! Good luck.

Ah, Sweet. I was wondering how good that stuff worked. I was going to paint all my interior pieces and buy new carpet, a headliner(or get the one which has the speakers built in and paint it), and seat cover for the bench inside. When you use it on your truck hit me up and tell me how it good it is and how it looks. Thanks.

Oh yea he did. He has been painting cars since he was 18. I had to stand outside my garage and look through the windows and watch him paint cause he wouldn't let me in. Haha. But I am planing on redoing my interior now that the exterior is done. I want to put a 2in drop in the front and a 3in drop in the back with some 17 or 18in rims. Still have to decide what kind to put on it though. ITS SO DIFFICULT TO CHOOSE! THERE ARE SO MANNNNYYYYY!!!!

Re: 91' S10 Restoration. Family Rebuild.

Here is the tailgate after sanding it down. This is the only place on the whole dang truck that had a wave in the metal, so we fixed that with filler and smoothed it back out.

The Cowl

Can You Guess Whats Going To Go Onto The Blocks?

THE BED!

I love this pic cause it looks like its about to dump a load. Haha.

I'm taking off the spare tire mount.

Then we got ready to paint the door sills the cowl, under the hood, the tail gate, and the front of the bed and the back of the cab. I had to go to school this day, it was a monday, and i begged and pleaded with my dad to let me stay home but I had to go. I was so excited to get off the bus to see what my dad had done and how the paint actually turned out. So Here It Is! (Photos curtisy* of my dad.)

Then We Waited A Day Or So after the paint was done to put every thing back together and to spray the bed.

And Here You See We Began To Unmask All The tape only to be put back on again.

One Door Is On!

Now Two!! Along With The Hood And The Cowl.

Now To Only Take The Bed off again to paint it finally on the next day!

Finally Paint Is Mass Quanity! I Was Super Stoked!

Now to Be Put Back Together. Once Again. Haha. It never got tireing cause it was so much fun.

Then We Took and Put her back together and parked sideways in my garage ready for us to paint it.

She's All Masked Up!

Nice...

I agree, while some bagged trucks look really good, it's just not really something I'm into. A good 2/3 or 3/4 inch drop is more my style.

I soon learned that a clean work space is a happy work space. all my parts were up in my room. haha. No actually it has red metal flake in to it. It changes colors in the light. When the sun is up beating down she is purple(this is when it looks like there is the pearl into it), when the sun is setting it has a rootbeer color which is when you can see the red metal flake in it, and at night under floresent lights like in a parking lot it looks gloss black with the flake in it.

WHAT! Keep going! Don't stop lol progress is coming along great. You had a clean truck to start with shame you're not keeping that blue-ish green color. I've been noticing alot of dad-son projects and I gotta say they are better than the others.

I thought about it at first to keep it all stock but, its my first vehicle and i wanted to make it what i have always wanted. The next one truck i am doing is going to be either a black and white two tone or the sea foam green color this truck orginially was. But that is when I get a wee bit older. And More money. Haha.

Re: 91' S10 Restoration. Family Rebuild.

Here We Go! The Primer, The Paint, And The Clear. This was the moment I had been waiting for for a long time! Everytime I look at it I get the sence of joy that i got the first time we wet sanded it. This was the highlight of the whole restoration build. Hope you enjoy.

And Now Comes The Paint. The Name of the paint was "Black Concurrent" and i fell in love with it the first time i saw it in the NAPA paint code book!

But What Made It Pop was the Clear Coat SON! Oh lord I thought i had walked in to a candy store when i saw how much in shined and glistened. I have pics of it out in the sun after it was done, let me just say it looks fricken AWESOME!, but you'll see those later. For now here is the clear.

That Was it for the paint besides the wet sanding but those pics are coming soooooooon!

Thanks dude. It feels great to know that other people like what you have done with your stuff. I appreciate it all from everyone. I have some more pics of the build when we finished it. I may post those tonight or tomorrow. Only time will tell, and how long I can stay on my computer. Haha.

Stay gold ponyboy, stay gold.

Nevermind what I said about keeping in sea green, that purple color is way cooler.

No and Yes acutually. I first got it from New Found Glory(they are a band if someone is wondering). Its from there first album, plus i wanna get it tatted on both of my forearms. But In the outsiders case, i read the book later on, I use the meaning that ponyboy had said in the movie when he was talking and looking up at the sky. So yea i did just never thought of it like that.
