Re: 91..Bagged, Bodied, Shaved

I still need a little help on the primer. lol.

I read the tech sheet on that xtreme dtm.

It says if sprayed 4:1:2 used as a sealer, it must be topcoated within 24 hours, if not within 24 hours, you must sand it, and then topcoat it.

I plan on priming my truck, reducing it down again, and spraying it as sealer, and leaving it like that for a while, before paint. not exactly sure how long.

So ill have to sand my sealer back off, then reseal it, and spray topcoat within 24 hours for it to get proper "adhesion" according to the tech sheet.??

Is there something i can put over the primer to protect it from water/sun damage until im ready to paint it? I was under the impression thats what sealing it was for.

Re: 91..Bagged, Bodied, Shaved

You can spray it 4:1 as a primer/sealer. Going 4:1:2 will just make it lay suuuuuper thin and smooth, I do 4:1 until the final coat then I reduce it. You can leave it on for months before a top coat. It hardens fully in 24hr. No matter what before you put the color coat you'll need to wet sand it. It will be hard(er) to wetsand it the longer you wait. The black primer looks like shit wet sanded though, So I wouldn't do it until you're ready for your color coat. Im leaving mine the way it is in primer until this winter and water wont damage it, nor will the sun. Its no biggie at all. Before I do any color coats I still have another block sand I have to do, another coat of primer and then my final wet sand. So its not a big deal for me cuz I still have a blocking to do. If you do ALL your body work and just prime it and keep it primed for a while before painting it, it will be more difficult for you to wet sand cuz of how hard it the primer is. Hope this helps and I'm not just rambling on, If I missed anything or you have more questions/concerns by all means ask away!

Re: 91..Bagged, Bodied, Shaved

If you look at all my post dates they are well over a 24hr span. I did re-coats of primer between all, and its 100+ degree outside where I'm at so it had plenty of set-up time. I had no issue at all blocking it either time.

Re: 91..Bagged, Bodied, Shaved

Okay, that pretty much took care of it for me.

I just want something durable, my truck is my daily, so i will more than likely be priming it in a weekend and work on it during the weeks/weekends until im completely done with it. I just want something that water wont attack and make it rust from underneath..

My primer thats on it now, has prolly been on it for years, and the bodywork is rusting from underneath, and now rust is showing through the primer. Previous owner did that, not me. hah

I just wasn't aware you could leave it out in the elements without it causing damage, i just want to be sure. I read online that people say wetsanding a 2k primer will cause it to absorb moisture and you will have to let it dry for 2-3 hours before topcoating it?

Ill be spraying this at my shop, we have a paintbooth we use to paint tractors in, nothing too fancy, it works, has venelation system, and a heater, gets it about 90-100 in there if you leave the doors closed.

I have to remove my back glass to fix some slight rust damage, where the dumbass shaved the drip rails on my truck, it has some pinholes in it, causing the back window to leak. I was considering picking up a quart of black urethane single stage, and doing all the bodywork on the roof, and window channel, and spraying the whole roof, and down the b pillars and just stopping somewhere down the pillar, just so i can stick the back glass back in, and know that its topcoated and wont rust back through that primer back there.

What is your opinion on doing this? Would it be okay to sand that single stage with say 400 grit when im ready to apply my final base/clear ontop of it?

Re: 91..Bagged, Bodied, Shaved

400 is still aggressive if you plan on leaving it like that. The Primer/sealer is designed to do just that seal and prime any bare metal surfaces. I wouldn't use a single stage paint, I would shoot the sealer over it and leave it be. If you reduce it, you wont need to sand it smooth. I haven't wet sanded my truck its just shot in primer and its smooth as hell

Re: 91..Bagged, Bodied, Shaved

so you think primer/sealer behind the glass is fine and wont ever give any troubles?

I may or may not remove the glass again when i paint it.

I just figured some sort of paint back there would help it from ever rusting/causing problems.

Re: 91..Bagged, Bodied, Shaved

Well, The truck is basically done. I have maybe 10% more body work to do, But I'm not doing the final work til it goes in for paint. Which won't be happening until this fall/winter. My civic is done, Minus paint, Which literally should be done any day. So, I'm kind of bored right now lol with nothing to work on. Waiting for my neighbor to come home from vacation and I'm going to ask them if they still wanna sell me their Pontiac Catalina wagon. I've wanted a pre smog boat of a car for forever. I'm hoping they say yes, and I get it super cheap. Whole car is original, its sat for a VERY long time, so the whole thing will need being gone through. I'm picking up my buddies dads 400 small block that he is giving me super cheap. Its bored .60 over, Balanced, Cam, Gear drive, Edelbrock intake manifold. Some other minor things. He went a diff route on his GTO, So I'm luckin out Motor is already torn mostly apart, I'm going to tear it to bare block and strip the heads. Port match everything and all new bearings and rings etc etc. Anywho, Picking up the motor either this weekend or sometime next week. Hoping to bring the Catalina home this weekend.... Keeping my fingers crossed

I didnt get the pontiac, Traded that 410 and all included parts for a 1000cc Kawi quad. Am now trading that quad tomorrow for two rifles. lol.
