Shifting Q

anyways as i post in another thread, that when racing i was having trouble with my 2nd-3rd shift. anyways after playing around a little bit i found that the car would only let me smoothly go into 3rd at 45-4600rpms

so what would be the faster way down the track, to risk going above 4600rpms for the shift and more then likely get grinding and waste close to a second to get it in gear

or shift at 4600rpm with no grinding at all

this is my first stick, so im not too great with racing yet

Re: Shifting Q

Yo know mine does the same thing everytime when i am racing or switching gears fast, see waht my friend told me and works good is hit 3rd in a rev, like when shifting out of sec when double clutching let go of the gas just a hair and csalme it again and when slamming the gas down slam the shifter into 3rd, although 3rd should be at the end of the track, 3rd is the weakest for a 2.2 i hate it, if i aint cought up in 2nd i lost no doubt, anyways try that shizznit

Re: Shifting Q

let me ask you this, are you trying to do WOT shifts? meaning that you never take your foot off of the gas pedal?

Re: Shifting Q

Hmmm, the nv3500 (5 speed in the v6 s10's) likes to grind as well, usually anything close to 5,000 and above if you're trying to shift too fast. I think both of these transmissions do this because they are truck trannies, not meant to be hotrodded, but once you get more used to it you will be able to minimize the grinding. The gear that grinds for me is 2nd if I try and shift real fast, happens about 15% of the time I try a real hard, fast gear change.

150k miles and i never grinded any gear.. and even with the 350 now in place.. doesnt grind.. .. its up to 190k now after a rebuild still no grinding.. you guys synchros maybe going out .. if its grinding when shifting.. why are you guys revin your engines so dayum high?? :O let me know when you guys throw a rod threw the side.. 6k interesting.. i didnt think 2.2 would rev so dayum high.. i dont rev my 4.3 or 5.7 past 4500 RPM.. plus most engines well american have power from idle to mid rpm..

He said 6000 rpms because he has a vortec 3500 5 cyl which just like the vortec 4200, revs to 6000 rpms safely. I rev my 4.3 to around 5300-5500 when I'm at the track just to ride out 3rd gear so I don't have to shift 4th, perfectly safe for the motor, sure it's past the hp peak but it allows the next gear to stay in the powerband. Like I said before, these are truck trannies not meant to be shifted like a T56 in a camaro, so taking the motor past 4500-4800 rpms and trying to shift too quickly sometimes just doesn't work as planned.

Re: Shifting Q

I shift all the time at 5000rpm and I also get grinding every once in a while but not that often.

Re: Shifting Q

Did you check your tranny fluid level? I was grinding into 3rd and decided to flush and fill my tranny, now she only grinds into 1st if I don't double clutch :-)

Re: Shifting Q

If your fluid level is correct and newly changed, then its your syncros.
