Why you don't need a capacitor - Realm of Excursion: Forum

nuff said. read it and you will understand. i knew they were worthless before, it's just good to know exactly why.

edit - good call on selling it to a clueless "friend". hopefully one of those know-it-all types.

That's one man's opinion. I've got a cap on my stereo, and it does what it's suppose to do. If I were competing in sound offs, that's a different story. But I listen to my stereo at modest to semi high levels, and at night I don't worry about my lights blinking because of the load (I probably wouldn't anyway). I've used caps in my systems for years now, and I'll continue to do so. I've also been doing installs for 21 years now (since I was 19). Capacitors have thier place in some systems, and unless I design and/or install a competition system, I'll keep using them for what they're meant for.

if you had followed the libnk that was posted, you would had been better educated. that is factual evidence. you should read up. your lights dont dimm probably because your amp doesnt draw enough power to dim them

the backup:

-0ga big 3
-missing link module (15.6v setpoint)
-powermaster 200a alt
-yellowtop up front
-hc2400 in back

hardly dips below 13.5 full tilt

I'll still keep my cap, even if it's only to keep an eye on how much voltage I have going to my amps.
I've also done a test. I ran my stereo without my cap, and the lights will blink depending on the volume that I'm running at (never more that 3/4 volume). With it, they don't blink. I need all the help that I can get, because they don't make a high output alternator for a '93 Toyota Paseo, and I can't find anyone that will build it up for me around here. Now, once I get an S-10/Sonoma, you're right, I won't need a cap (I may use on in the amp display though) because I could just get a high output alternator.
And BTW, I did read that link awhile back, long after I did the install in my car. It was very informative and educational, but I still think that depending on the install, a cap can still serve a purpose. Like I said before, one man's opinion. None of the installs that I do for myself are for competition, so they can serve a purpose there. In a competition system (that is what you're building/have built) they serve no purpose. An extra battery would be a better choice if necessary.
In a street car (like mine), I can see a purpose in them. I sometimes have to have my foglights, wipers, and heater on at the same time, and the short burst of energy that you can get from a cap during those times is useful. But in a competition system, when you're not moving and the only thing that should be on IS the stereo, there's no use for them.
But anyway, you have your opinion, and I have mine. I'll keep my cap, and I won't loose any sleep over your opinion of me using one.

Re: sound system show off!!

That whole lightbulb/battery/capacitor deal is BS. Sure, the cap cannot power the light bulb nowhere near the length of time a battery can; but that is not what a capacitor is used for. To use that as proof that a capacitor is useless is smoke and mirrors; a half truth to make RC look correct. Notice that there was no response by RC to the engineer's rebuttal in that thread; he left it up to the "dazzled and amazed" to fire off at the guy. He knew his part was done, and left the dirty work for the nut hangers.

Want an actual, real world, every day rebuttal? Buy a HID wallpack, tie it directly into your breaker box (don't need any bogus voltage drop excuses), and disconnect the capacitor from the ballast and see if the light ever fires up. An endless supply of energy will not have the power necessary to fire the light off. If anyone here has ever had to change the starter out in a florescent fixture has experienced the the necessity of a capacitor, as that is what the starter is.

Unless your amplifiers have a ton of headroom, a capacitor can and will help with the transients in music, moreso when you are playing your music at high volume.

Let's attack nitrous next. Your engine can't run on nitrous alone, as it can with gasoline; and using nitrous only makes it necessary to use more gas! So get a bigger gas tank and fuel pump and say F* you to nitrous!!!

Re: sound system show off!!

Thanks guys, my first attempt at doing anything like that, I feel like it came out pretty good. It was basically all trim work as the sub box was an MTX sledge hammer with 2 12 4500s. The focus box was all custom made and has 2 kicker cvr comps, same subs going in my s10. I am looking to get an ex cab but need to sell the damn focus first haha

Personally i would have thrown some LEDs in, but thats just me

Those arent 10s are they?...if so how did you manage to them in without hitting against the seat and not bottoming on the box (unless they are shallow...which im not sure MTX makes)

.....I might have to look into getting myself some 3/4 Plexi/Lexan for when i break down and get subs.

Temporary system until i can save enough money to get what I really want. Cheap 1000watt amp & Capacitor for now. Its all I could afford. (Installing back in my truck after it gets back from the paint shop, I hit a pole by our driveway so its getting re painted.)
