Running the Power Wire Through the Antenna Grommet

I figured out a good way to safely get the power wire through the grommet on the antenna. Everybody knows to use it, but I have something to add

I was trying to figure out how to run my power wire through the firewall tonight (as no doubt you have tried if you have a rather small gauge power wire), and I tried drilling out the antenna grommet when it split. The install was not going to work very well, so I got the Phoenix Gold 4-2/0 gauge firewall grommet $4.95 from Parts Express and used it for this installation.

It is actually slightly on the small side, but it covers the hole, and I don’t have to worry about wearing through the grommet and wire now.

I had to take the bottom of the dash and a few other pieces off, but I found out that the antenna lead is secured in 2 places in the dash, between the HVAC, the glove box (which you can’t reach), and below the dash. The clip below the dash comes off by unwrapping the tape from the wire. This leaves the wire free to slide up and down in the dash. Then you have to pull the wire down and out the hole in the firewall. The easiest way to do this is take some remote wire lead (roughly 18 gauge, although any smaller wire will work) and wrap it around the tip of the antenna lead. Once you have it down, you need to take it through the firewall, put the nut on the wire, reinsert it thru the firewall. Have a buddy hold the “bolt” side of the grommet while you thread it. Voila, you have a new grommet in the firewall that will allow a 4 gauge wire to coexist with your antenna lead! Finally, just rewrap the antenna lead to the feeder cable and pull it back up to the top of the dash and you will be set.

Thanks

Eric

Does that have a rubber seal on the inside or is it just plastic?
