[Project] Jump seat box for orion comp 12
So this will be the thread that get the progress pics. Imma be building a jumpseat enclosure for one of my orion txr pro dvc 12s. Calls for a 1.1 cuft box sealed, so I should be able to get that outta this box with a little massaging from some fiberglass. Ill be using a scosche 550 257 watt 2 channel 2ohm stable amp. Each VC will be wired to a separate channel.
I took the seat out today and started making a few measurements, gotta do some cutting tomorrow on the stock panel to make a litttle room in there. Damn panel got some of my skin so I acctually have blood and sweat in this one. After getting the seat out GM supplied me with 2 stock bolts to bolt the bottom of the box down with, and Im thinking about making a false floor to house the amp and my small tool kit, jumper cables and the like. Ill post the pics tomorrow, and I will have measurements for everyone with pics that wants to do this box. Beware though, you have to take out the two torx bolts for the seat belt to get the panel off and that is a royal pita, they have a gorrilla hiding in the factory to tighten these. Check back for pics, tomorrow after 8pm central or so. Last edited by PhatBoy : 09-12-2006 at 11:55 PM. |

Re: [Project] Jump seat box for orion comp 12
Well here we go...Below are the first set of pics that I have for this project, they include the truck this is going in, whats coming out, whats going in, and some how too pics, and a mock up pic or two. I also threw in a pic of my kick ass creeper my mom got me for Christmas. So without further adeu:
Truck its going in... ![]() Whats coming out, I want my damn space back. ![]() Whats going in, Orion DCV 1000 watt 12 @ 4 ohms ![]() Everywhere there is a arrow or line is a place that has to be taken out or disconnected. The two seat belt bolts are a T-50 torx. DO NOT try to remove them with anything else, they will strip and your screwed.(No pun intended). The coat hanger has one phillips screw, the jump seat bolts and nuts are 1/2 in, and the lines are quick clips. The bottom two for the seat, one is under the carpet, and one is down in the hole under the seat, you have to tilt the seat out to get to that one. There are also two phillips screws to each side of the seat through the panel that have to come out, I forgot the arrows. They are self explanitory. ![]() Hellof alot of sound deadening material there. ![]() Gm decided to leave the old rear speaker opening in the cab support so I have a nice place to french in my antennea. ![]() Mockup for a size comparison, I will be bringing this out to make more airspace, and also mounting the sub inverted for just a tad more...Box will be 1.5 Cuft possibly ported, maybe not. The port will be in the angled section below the woofer. Im using another woofer in better condition incase you are wondering. ![]() Pick of my kick ass creeper my mom got me. Cool mom huh. ![]() Thats all for now, I will be working on this a little each afternoon so check back tomorrow night for an update. Wish me luck. Last edited by PhatBoy : 09-13-2006 at 06:58 PM. |

Re: [Project] Jump seat box for orion comp 12
Well I got a little more done tonight, and I think I will call it quits tonight. Here is more.
This is the amp I will be using Scosche 550 257 watt 2 channel 2ohm stable. A little under powered for that sub but it was cheap, and brand new, and my other one finally quit on me. ![]() Youll wanna peel the stuffing shit back to make the cut. Do not try to saw through this stuff it will make a mess. Remove as much as you can to make a clean cut. ![]() This is enough to make the cut. ![]() Make a cut similar to this about 1/2 in from the edge, and clean the slag up with some 60 grit. Be carefull not to scar up the outside or to cut through anything you dont want cut...Dont get in a hurry! ![]() This is what itll look like when its cut out. ![]() Here is a shot of the panel back in the truck, I took some tentative measurements, but Im not going to post any untill Im sure that everything fits fine. ![]() Then there is the Other Chevy, my dog. Hes cool as shit. And yes his name is really Chevy. ![]() |

Re: [Project] Jump seat box for orion comp 12
Hopefully with alittle luck and some quality time with a box, I will have a template made out of cardboard. Im going to do it this way to make sure it fits correctly, then the measurements will be taken from that and put on some particle board. Its the same shit those premade boxes are done in, so it should be fine. Check back around 8 or 9 pm tonight for an update.

Re: [Project] Jump seat box for orion comp 12
Here is another short update, Ill be working on this for a while longer tonight so there will be at least one more update today. I got the cardboard template cut out and I only have one fitment issue of about a 1/2 inch, and then I will add the front of the box to this, after that is the serious fabrication part.
Oh and you guys arent getting dimentions till the end...well maybe Ill post some as Im building the box!!!! Put the box in to check the fit, and only the top right rear corner is causing an issue at the moment, glad I started with cardboard. ![]() Here is the clearance with the seat belt housing, not much room for error on that side, eh. ![]() I snapped the panel back on to check fitment with that, and Im pleased with the way it looks so far. I am going to move it just a little to the right. I am also going to take 1/2 in off the top. ![]() Here you can see how close it came to the top side of the cab support, I dont want it to touch there and shake the cab to shit. ![]() Here you can see the bolts that GM was so nice to supply for me to bolt the box down, but I dont think they are going to be long enough. Very easy to change out though. I hope. ![]() That is all for now. I didnt get any pics building the carboard box, but I will be sure to get pics when I build the real one. It was straight foreward box building with gussets to ensure 90*angles on all surfaces. Nothing more than a carpenters square, and a box knife, with some tape. Remember measure 902834283y598234598 x pi to the 3rd power, cut once. Last edited by PhatBoy : 09-14-2006 at 06:21 PM. |

Re: [Project] Jump seat box for orion comp 12
Im working on it now, got alot done today so a really nice update will come tonight. I just found out that this thing displaces 244cu inches. So by inverting it I will be gaining that back, woohoo.
I had to nix the port as it calls for a 4'' port that is 16'' long..way to large for this box. So sealed it is. Here are the specs if you guys wanna tell me what the hell Im looking at...All those damn Qs and Fs and shite. http://www.orioncaraudio.com/alley/pdfs/00xtrprosub.pdf Update later. |

Re: [Project] Jump seat box for orion comp 12
Well heres a good update. I worked on this for around 6 hours today. I know it may look like a mess, but its acctualy going to fit really well, and its really REALLY strong. I used gorilla glue, and 2 1/2 in deck screws to hold the main box together. All the bracing is only glued in right now, but all will get screwed in tomorrow for added strength.
Here we see the box as is when I got home from work. Yes the box was made from a cabinet, no it wasnt a cheap glue and paper synthetic. 5/8 in wood, and this shit is stout. ![]() Back ![]() I sat the box in place after drilling holes for the bolts, fits nicely but needed some trimming up in 3 corners, and if you look at the top I had to add some material there in the next pic. ![]() Added the part up top to have something to staple the material too. ![]() Trimmed up the corners to get a perfect fit, I also had to clearance a little for the seat belt reel. ![]() Back out and started on the braceing for the sub, there is alot of bracing to come. ![]() Cut out my mount rings and glued them together with some weight, more braceing, adn some gussets, That damn sub is heavy as fock, and its going to hang on the box so this part had to be thick, and really strong. Im not done bracing yet. ![]() My ghetto compass cause my other one didnt get big enough. ![]() Heres a shot with the sub on top of the box to give you an idea of whats going on here. Yes its laying on its back, this whole thing will be 90* turned left so the sub will be horozontal. Big ass magnet. ![]() I went to JoAnne fabrics and picked up some stretchy material in the factory color. I want this to be a factory looking install. ![]() This bitch is getting like 6-8 layers of glass, well strips of teeshirt and resin, Im too broke to buy woven cloth, so the tee will have to do. I wonder if 8 layers will be enough. I hope so, I wont have any teeshirts left. LoL Im going to continue work tomorrow, and will have more pics tomorrow night. Were also choppin shropies seats down to buckets to make room for a center console. Woot...Oh and Im getting some Slate grey leather power heated camaro buckets next week... ![]() Last edited by PhatBoy : 09-16-2006 at 02:17 AM. |

Re: [Project] Jump seat box for orion comp 12
you can afford the heated, leather camaro seats but you won't spend the extra cash to get some woven glass. . . tee shirt material is hardly a substitute for fiberglass mat if you want that thing to be strong. . .

Re: [Project] Jump seat box for orion comp 12
This is what happened today. Pretty good day. My wife got her new bowling ball drilled, I rolled a 173. My truck got washed, there will be a thread with pics in the rides section. Shropie got his console in, and his seat cut down to a bucket. Oh yeah...the box...
This is after I put 3 in countersunk deck screws in every possible place there was to put one for bracing. Added a couple more braces and gussets. ![]() This is the start of the covering and glassing part. Took lots of staples for this. ![]() This is after I got it covered and trimed up. This box is acctually gonna be rather large in airspace. ![]() I brushed resin on the starter material to give it some rigidity to lay the glass on, and proceded to lay 2 layers of REAL GLASS NOT TEE SHIRT down. With only the two layers its already rediculously strong, but not good enough yet. ![]() The first two layers dry. Like I said its really strong already, but I can still wiggle it just a tad if I push hard, so at least two more layers are going on it. Possibly 3 or 4 more layers depending on how strong it gets with each additional layer. And Paint toad owns me, tee shirt is deffinitly not as strong. For less than obvious reasons. ![]() ![]() Now heres the thing...The glassed layers ARE NOT going to be the outside of the box. There will be another layer stapled to the inside of the mount rings, and to the back side of the trim around the box. This layer isnt getting anything on it except resin on the back side to make sure it doesnt go anywhere. The outside is going to stay soft to conform to the shape of the opening. In my haste to get this done, I did not put the box in the truck to place the mount rings, and I will have to trim my panel up to fit. However, when you do your box, if you do one you should put the box in the truck first, then figure out where you want the mount ring to go. Also I think it will be funny when people see my box and touch it. They will be really surprized that the outside of the box is only cloth. LOL. No really man the outside is just cloth nothing else. That is a special airtight cloth I got from Indonesia. That is all for today. Last edited by PhatBoy : 09-17-2006 at 12:53 AM. |

Re: [Project] Jump seat box for orion comp 12
You really think itll need that many layers. I mean there is a 25lb woofer hanging off this thing.
Also my amp is 2ohm stable, do you think I could wire it like this and be ok. Or would it be better to just wire one VC to each channel normally, and have a 4ohm load? Last edited by PhatBoy : 09-17-2006 at 01:28 AM. |

Your amp is 2 ohm stable stereo, 4 ohm stable mono. You would have to wire each voice coil, to each channel. |

Re: [Project] Jump seat box for orion comp 12
Well guys and gals its pretty much done, I will have at least one more update showing the acctual bolting in of the box, and some links that were a big help to me. This damn thing pounds like its the cool thing to do. My wife was worried about the neighbors calling the cops, and it wasnt even turned up past 5 clicks on the stock head.
As close as I can figure it came out to just over 1.1 cuft witch is exactly what the speaker calls for, and I couldnt be happier with the end result. So enough talk heres the pics. I took Paint toads advice and put 8 layers of glass on there, and covered that with 2 layers of just resin, its like 1/2 in thick literally more in some places. ![]() I didnt like the quirky little angled part at the bottom of the panel so I trimed it to a rectangle, I was having some fitment issues and this cleared them up. Man am I glad I trimmed it, it turned out great. ![]() First test fit after the trimming and this is the point where I got in ''Go mode" to finish this up. ![]() The start of the covering process. ![]() Covered and stretched nice and taught, but still has enough play that it can conform to the panels opening. ![]() Another shot of the covering. ![]() Sat the sub on it to get an idea of what it looks like finished. I got really damn antsy about now. ![]() Here you can kinda see that the outside fabric is still soft to the touch, kinda trips your head out to think that the outside is soft, and pliable. I like it, neat trick. ![]() Put it back in the truck, and bolted the sub in. ![]() Here she is in all her glory, and man I cant tell you how happy I am. I just wish you could hear it over the internet. It hits waaaaaaaaaaay harder than the two of them did in that older box. Much clearer also. ![]() This is my air gauge light controller, my air gauges hit with the bass. I can also switch them to steady on like normal. ![]() Over all Im exstatic about the way it came out, and I will be working on photoshoping you guys dimentions right now. Keep in mind that the way you do the front of the box is completely up to you. Im only going to give you outside dimentions of the main box. Be sure to take into consideration the thickness of the wood you are using, as that is added to the outer measurements. What do you think? |

Re: [Project] Jump seat box for orion comp 12
i really really like that soft covering. much easier than sanding and painting to match. very good project. i cant wait to get started on mine this fall/winter.
i think im gonna do my 12 normal in the box instead of reverse. yours still looks cool, but i wanna be able to hide all the wires and stuff. Last edited by Kovz : 09-19-2006 at 01:52 PM. |

Re: [Project] Jump seat box for orion comp 12
i know you did. well if you ever change you're mine, it's not like you cant cut that one brace out. seems like it would be sturdy enough without it.
also, ive never fiberglassed before. will you put a list of the material i will need to do mine like yours. just add it to your write up. ive read a few things here and there on the forum about fleece, spandex, staples, what to do, what not to do, but anything that works and looks good is fine with me. besides, im going to do a soft covering on it, so it doesnt need sanded smooth |
