Power Antenna
Need help clearing up some confusion before I open the dash to my wife's car.
I have an 03 s10. My wife's car(hyundai santa fe) has a power antenna wire (green) on the factory harness. I'm pretty sure it's an amplifier for the antenna so she gets decent reception. She has a clarion setup in her car and she says the reception is lousy. I always thought the power antenna wire was for a motorized antenna, so I capped it off and left it. (Am I the only one?) In my truck, the metra harness or aftermarket harness that plugs into the oem harness doesn't have a power antenna wire, and the reception in my truck is usually fairly decent. My wife's car has the metra 70-2003 wiring harness in it, but I can't find the wiring diagram anywhere online. If the power antenna wire is in the harness then I can go ahead and connect them to fix the reception issue. Otherwise I'll have to tap into the main harness for the wire. Any ideas? Re: Power Antenna
why would you cap it off to begin with? Doesnt the deck have a wire for it?

Re: Power Antenna
if she doesnt have a power antenna, than id assume the wire is there as an add on feature, so im sure its just a dead wire anyways, as the green wire is for the power antenna. usually the power antenna/accessory wire on the headunit is blue with a white marking.
id say the static is from a poor antenna wire, which may have a cut in it somewhere from the radio to the antenna, or a poor ground to the radio. also, i have noticed the kenwood stereo we had in our cavalier had static on certain stations, where the pioneer (the one in my truck now) didnt have any on any station. could or may be the radio also? edit: forgot to mention, if she has a factory system in there, the green wire is also used to turn the factory amp on. but i doubt she does since she can tune into the radio as is, usually the factory system runs all high's and low's. Re: Power Antenna
theres hardly ever a "dead wire", "dead wires" cost money so therefore they wont include them in the harness unless its needed. Im not at work to pull the specs, so Id do this:
put something like a 3-5amp fuse on that wire and hook it up to the red wire on the radio's harness while listening to the radio. If the reception gets better, thats your answer. Id also watch hooking it up to the blue wire on the radio as sometimes the 250milliamp output isnt enough to power a booster like that, so keep it on the red wire. Nissan's can be like that as well. |
