Keyless entry range fix

thread on zr2usa.com
extend the range of your keyless entry
http://www.zr2usa.com/mboard/index.php?showtopic=29423

Ok, I was fed up with the range (or lack there of...) of the factory keyless entry.....
So after a little inspection.....& 20 minutes invested, my remote now works from around 300 ft.

Here we go:

You need the following:

->4ft. length of 28gauge wire.
->Drill with a bit that's the same size, or just larger than the wire.
->soldering gun & solder
->A little skill....and patience..

1st.....and foremost......DO NOT HAVE THE VEHICLE RUNNING......TAKE THE KEY OUT FROM THE IGNITION.

*Under the dash, drivers side, remove the black plastic panel (where the OBDII connector is), usually 5 screws.

*Lower the panel, behind the OBDII connector, you will find a square black box, this is the RKE module. There are 2 clips that hold the module in, release these clips, and lift the module out.

*Unplug the RKE module, and remove.

*Once removed, unscrew the cover, there are 2 clips on either side of the module, CAREFULLY unclip the cover.

*Remove the circuit board from the housing.

*Turn the board over, with the connector facing you.

*On the upper right hand corner, you'll see four (4) black surface mount transistors, Now, above the third one you will make a notch in the edge of the board, approx. 1/16 of an inch. (See third pic)

DO NOT GO NEAR THE CIRCUITS.......

*The notch is only the give the wire room to fit between the board and the housing.

*Turn the board over, one the outer perimeter of the board, you will find a circuit that ends about 1/4 from the edge of the board, with a small solder stop at the end......just short of where you made the notch. (See pic 4)

*Scrape about 1/4 inch of the protective GREEN layer away from the end of that circuit. (pic 4 aswell).

*Now "tin" the exposed copper trace. (pic 5)

*Tie a not in the wire about 1 1/2" from the end (So that the wire, if stressed, does not pull out of the board) (Pic 6)

*Solder the length of wire to this trace. Make sure that the knotted end of the wire is the end that is attached to the board. (Pic 7)

*Cover the exposed solder connection with melted candle wax to protect it. (Pic 8)

*Drill a small hole (Almost the same size as the wire, into the box. (Pic 9)

*Feed the wire through the hole, FROM THE INSIDE OUT. (Pic 10)

*Put the circuit board back in the box, re-install the cover, and the screw.

*Pull the new antenna (wire), till the knot seats against the inside of the box. (PLEASE...DON'T PULL TOO HARD......)

*Re-install the RKE module under the dash.

*Feed the new wire antenna out to the drivers side of the dash, should come out near the fuse panel.(Pic 11)

*Remove the "A" pillar trim, and tape the new antenna to the existing wire conduit on the piller. (Pic 12)

*Re-install the pillar trim.

*DONE.
