Just Did the big 3...

and i made sure all my solder joints were good. i just about picked up the welder and cart by the wire on each joint. got my wire to alt, wire to engine, and wire to frame. i drove around today and sometimes if i was at a light it would idle so low itd almost die then it jump back up to normal. then sometimes when i go to take off from the light it no matter if i floored it or not it wouldnt go over about 1grand for a few seconds, then finally start to accelerate quickly. i removed the factory wiring minus the wire going to the starter and wire going from positive side to the big fuse under the battery tray. im guessing somethings not getting a good connection???

overview

frame ground.. im fixing that heatshrink so it covers my shielding stuff.

Re: Just Did the big 3...

hook up stock wires again and then start unhooking them one by one until you figure out which one needed to stay.

that is, if you're sure your wires have good contacts. on that note, you should have scraped the paint off your frame before you attached that ground. dremel some paint off and put your ground back on to bare, shiny metal. a star washer couldn't hurt. then you can paint over that if you want...

Re: Just Did the big 3...

i think ill hook up the wires tomorrow... try that out.

and for the frame gound, it is ground down to bare metal.. actually a pretty big section. i can see it in the pic.

Re: Just Did the big 3...

I take it from the pics that you used a heavy guage wire to mount the stock wire's connector to. That shouldn't be necessary with the lugs that you purchased that I see are on the battery now. That lugh should hold the factory connector as it would in a stock application, and allow the new wires you have to be mounted on the stud (as you have it in the pics). I would put the stock connector back and alleviate that heavy guage wire as a possible bottle neck.

Re: Just Did the big 3...

I couldn't tell that the frame was ground down bare or not. To me, it looks like you have a nicely painted frame and you just wiped away dirt and grime from about a 2" diameter all around your ground. Hard to tell in the picture I guess.

Re: Just Did the big 3...

As long as the lug is making good contact with the frame the loc tite won't hurt anything. I use it on all my fasteners on my truck and in electrical panel connections at work.

Re: Just Did the big 3...

I had a thought today...I'm not sure where the wire that plugs into the back of the alternator connects into the rest of your electrical harness. It may have been indirectly connected to the smaller wire on your positive battery terminal. Start with reconnecting that wire...that could be your culprit since I believe that pin is what tells the alternator to produce fewer or more amperage based on system voltage.

ok.. i put all the stock ground wires back on.. the one to the block, frame, and core support. drove it around the block and it was fine.. then i started it up and drove it again and it is back again. so now the only wire left not connected like factory is the one coming off the alternator to the big fuse under the battery tray.

i also noticed that on one of my terminals, its kinda stripped out. so i guess that can cause some problems. im going to buy some more tomorrow and also going to solder my factory alt wire back in.. thats all thats left lol.

where the red electrical tape is, thats where the stock alt wire went into.. then it ran to the battery.

Re: Just Did the big 3...

the stock wire in your last picture shouldn't have caused any problems taking it out. that should just be the main charging wire going through the fusible link to the battery and should be able to be deleted (unless, that small wire that plugs into the back of your alternator via the 4 pin plug is somehow linked to that wire). like i said before you did the upgrade, there are little differences between engines and years and stuff frank and bob did with the wiring that makes one truck different than another in odd ways. some trucks don't even have fusible links and some even use as small as 8 gauge wire for the main charging wire!

so from hearing this, im gonna say its my semi stripped out terminal bolt. it is fine once i am moving. but the initial take off backing down the driveway and going back up, the truck stumbled on itself for like 5 seconds them finally made it up the driveway. i dont even have a steep driveway lol.
