amp draw

how do i find out how many amps an amp, and radio would draw.

I have an extra deck, 2 6.5 speakers, and an amp and sub that I want to build a "garage" stereo out of.

If anybody has done this let me know what kind and where you got the ac110 to dc12v converter from.

Thanks guys

Re: amp draw

Look at the ratings on the inline fuse(s) on the head unit wiring harness and the fuse(s) rating on the amp. Add those up and you've got your answer.

that works if everything is 100% efficent which it isnt. What gear are you running? To tell you the honest truth its cheaper to go on ebay and pick up some old receivers/amps and run your shit than to try to run it with power inverters

That isn't correct, skinnyg. Efficiency is merely a ratio of usable output / power consumption, with power consumption being the common denominator here. The power consumption of any device is 100% of all energy displaced, useful or wasted (which, of course, is what the ratio of efficiency seeks to tell us).

And that's what makes using the Chop's technique reliable for figuring out the necessary size of the converter.
Fuses are (should be) rated right above the protected device's peak power consumption. Thus, under all normal conditions, should never be exceeded. Therefore, the converter's supply should always be efficient also.

Re: amp draw

If you plan on doing this, just use a computer power supply. go on google and look up the wiring for them and only use the ground and 12 volt ones. I know ground is black, i think 12V is red. and you also have to wire the green? wire to a ground to trick the power supply into thinking its hooked up to a motherboard. pretty easy all in all i made a little speaker box with 2 5 1/4s and a 10" type E runnin off a couple amps and it works fine for the price i paid for everything.

Re: amp draw

Not going against the computer supply idea, as there are some beefy computer power supplies out there; here is an idea of the costs you are going to encounter based on your needs:
http://www.trcelectronics.com/12-vol...hassis-1.shtml

Actually, this next page is a fairer (is that a word?) bet, as the supplies above are of the largest type available on that site. Here is a list of all of the 12V power supplies:

The "Chop's Technique"... LOL! I like that.
