Question 1st Gen | Dash mounting plate speakers?

After doing some research via this forum, I believe I am either going to purchase a set of one of the following:

Now I've read that people have had to make some slight modifications in order to get this properly installed in the dash. So, I'm asking for some assistance. I'd like to know:
  1. What mods were made (details please)?
  2. Do you have pics of the mods?
  3. How difficult was the installation?

Thanks for the help.

With the speakers midrange being off set it does make fitting them difficult. The pass side is easy from what I remember but the driver's side has the dash cluster in the way. It's been years since I put plates in these so I apologize I am not more of a help.

You have to trim out part of the cluster back. When I was running plates in mine I just used a hacksaw blade and trimmed out enough to fit the speaker in.

Re: 1st Gen | Dash mounting plate speakers?

last ones I did I just turned the speakers to where they just mostly popped in till they hit the ac duct and screwed them in there. They barely pushed in duct, maybe 1/4"

Re: 1st Gen | Dash mounting plate speakers?

Got tired of not being able to fit what i wanted in the dash so i did a custom job with 4" over the factory grill. good plate style 4x6 that are not over sized are hard to find.

Now i can fit any 4" i choose down the line.

I have an extra set of factory covers so i can revert later if i choose.

The wire loom on the drivers side being in the way could be an issue too.

good luck!
