Re: Teaching Fiberglass (part one and two)

Console Update:

I've got 90% of the skeleton complete for the center console. I re-did the switch panel with a more bulbous end to it. When the fabric is streched over it, it will create a hump in the console aft of the panel towards your right hip area of the seat. The hump, makes a nice and comfortable place for your palm to rest as you're hitting switches. Call is a more egonomic design of the switch panel.
The socket for the capacitor is complete and the side walls are roughed in in these pictures. I still have to work more on fitting them flush with the floor by adding more material to the bottom of these pieces.
You all know I don't half ass shit, so you know the gap seen in the pictures will be taken care of prior to any fiberglassing.
The Guages are mounted at a 40* angle and canted 8* toward the driver. You would have to be blind as a bat to not see them. I just ordered my Carlington style rocker switch for the pancake. Its a slightly larger switch than the others which is what I wanted. My interior light theme is red, as all the lights on the interior, including aftermarket guages have been replaced with a red L.E.D.; so the switch I ordered is a momentary on- off - momentary on with red L.E.D. lights in the switch.

Someone asked earlier about the other switches. They are 1" x 1 1/8" marine sealed momentary rocker switches 12vdc.

The switch panel is at a 30* angle, again for a more egonomic and comfortable feel of the switches over longer drives. Call it a blind man's delight with these switches, as they are at hip hieght right next to you.

Like I said, I still have to fit the console to the floor but thats pretty much it. Then I strech fabric and resin it this weekend and then next weekend we'll get the new dash going. Once everything is fabricated and to the point that the new sub box is at, I'll bulk order all my glass and go to town on it.

PM if you have any questions. Just a little FYI, fitting this thing to the floor is not easy if your intentions are to have a seamless fit to the floor with no gaps. Take your time, and it will eventually fit with your console design.

Lastly, while you build your console, DO NOT FORGET to think about how you'll mount it. This console will be held down with 4 selftapping screws. There are two holes pre-drilled by the switches and by the guages. Access to these holes, once covered in glass, will be through one of the switch holes and one of the guage holes.

I'm going as fast as I can, lol. I did all that in about 6 hours. The shit is precise and fitment is exact, expept for the floor, but I'll have that squared away probably tomorrow.

I should have strech fabric and resin on it by Friday, maybe Saturday, so you'll be able to see a generalized look of it then. The glass and paint will be the same shape as the strech fabric so it won't change much after the fabric.

Be patient, friday or saturday.

You mean, me charging someone to do it for them? or teh cost thus far in supplies?

The cost so far in supplies for just the console is roughly $70 if you count the cost for the switches too. And, thats without glass and bondo. When the new dash is done, I'll order just enought to put some decent layers on the box, console and dash. The cost of all the glass I need for each is roughly $120 fo just the glass alone. All in all, the sub box, the console, and the dash, cost wise for just the supplies to complete each, we're looking at around $400 including some of the specialized tools needed.

if youwere counting the sub box with amps and woofers, the consoles guages and switches, and the dash's screen, the total cost for all three items to be complete, painted and functional is roughly $2700 - $2900 total, not including paint of the other items in the interior. The interior total is probably going to be around $4000 when finished. But, thats a showquality finish for all custom fiberglass items and paint. The console, is specifically tailored for me, my comfort, seat position, hand dorsal flex, and driver fatigue have been factored. Custom show quality and function, thats what I say.....

The supplies to do all this does make cost go up; even more if you're in-experienced and screw stuff up. They you obviously have the costs of amps, woofers, guages, shit like that. Just adds up. $4000 might be a stretch but thats what I have allocated for the interior work.

Hell, I've been collecting parts in my garage so that my over-all build of this truck, from interior to suspension, to bondy, to paint, goes as smooth as possible with no lag time wasted waiting for money on parts or parts to be shipped in general. I must have like $12k worth of shit sitting here waiting for the time for them to go on.

Dude ease up lol. I have put the time and money in to my truck. I was jus amazed at the level of engineering you put into your console so that it fits you perfectly. The "wow" meant..."Great fuking job man!"

Oh, I thought you meant the other Wow referring to the money invested. I was just on a speal about doing things right if you're gonna do it. Have you done any work yet on yours?

Thanks for the compliments. I try to put as much though into it to avoid not liking the end result or having to do things twice. One mess up and you might be doing it over again, i.e., both my sub boxes. One error and it had to be redone.

Nah I'm still trying to figure out exactly what route I want to go. Also, I'm away at college so I don't really have time to work on my truck right now.

Re: Teaching Fiberglass (part one and two)

Here are some more pics of the console roughed in with the seats in place to get an idea of its placement, switch placement and viewing angle of the guages.

This one is of the camara right where your head would be with your eyes viewing down on them. Its going to be pretty damn easy to see these guages.

Hopefully I'll have the fitment with the floor worked out today or tomorrow and then the fabric starts going on. All in all, its a fairly simple design so fabrication went alot faster.

Man, everytime I watch my little video clip I made, I know exactly whose truck is the Blue one, lol. Is that on air or no? Anyway, thanks for the compliments. Its coming along nicely. And, like I'm sure you experience, everytime I see the boxes of parts, I just want to tear into them and start installing shit, lol. I can't wait to get the interior done so I can move onto something different, like the suspension work.

Its a weekend driver. When complete, its probably see a couple 100 miles on it a month from just the weekends. I wanted to keep the overall appearance and size minimal to reduce the feeling of clutter in the cab. Its a regular cab with a good size, but fit-able sub box and now a console, and the buckets are slightly larger than a Blazer bucket. The seats are from a 99 Pontiac Bonneville so they too are adding abit to the room consumption inside the cab. I guess I could have added an armrest but, like I said, room is getting tight to work with. hence, the modified sub box for a much sleeker profile, the capacitor residing in the console, etc. Its becoming a logistical nightmare trying to fit everything I want and not consume the room needed for comfort.

Good idea though. Just not for me.

Re: Teaching Fiberglass (part one and two)

how did you get the shape of the console to match the under/front side of the dash with the curve in it???

That was a little tricky and time consuming. I took careful measurements of the floor and it's angle, the area under the dash and their various angles and lengths, and cut out a piece of carboard for a template. Then, on this template I basically free hand drew on the cardboard the curve of the dash and then cut this portion out of the cardboard. My goal was to leave an 1/8" gap from the console to the dash for fiberglass build up to close this gap. But, the curve I drew was not correct, so, I placed in the cardboard in the truck under the dash where it would go and started looking at the gap between my drawn line and the lines of the dash. At various (10 points) of the curve, I took measurement of how much was needed to close the gap to 1/8". I went to the piece of 1/4" ply and started tracing most of the template that was correct and then marked the 10 points of the curve and drew a line connecting these points. Now, the curve on the plywood was correct for the dash.

Word of caution: The passenger side and driver side of the console are different. The angle of the floor is relatively the same but, the dash extends slightly further for the driver's side than the passenger side and the passenger side has more obsticles to clear such as the extra power plug in's and the like. Just be aware that two templates will need to be made. Do not rely on one template for both sides.

thanks for that so just guess the curve(free hand) then check the fit, see where to cut more or what not.

Thats exactly what I did. Just trial and error til its right. Use a piece of carboard so you don't screw up materials with all the cutting.

Re: Teaching Fiberglass (part one and two)

Update:

You want a center console,,,,,,,,You got a center console.

Check this bad boy out. So far,,,,,Perfect.

I shimmed the bottom edge to line the floor better. Then the strech fabric on.

Pay CLOSE ATTENTION to the strech fabric. It is all one piece streched into some crazy directions. It is very tight.

I'll give $500 if you can do the same with fleece with zero folds or creases...........

Sorry, But you won't. No Damn Way, lol. But you can try.

Now it on to doing the dash and then ordering the glass to do all three. The console still needs the initial coating of resin which I might do tomorrow, but today is was like 30degrees out. Too cold for mixing batches.
