Good morning homie. I'll be dropping off that Aluminum plate for the tanks this weekend. As far as glassing goes.....I get off at 3 and then I'm going home to finish the glass in the goose neck of the sub box and then going like a wild man with the bondo and sanding work. I'm guess I might have about 90% of the surface prep for paint completed by the end of the weekend.

Next weekend, I'll start the new dash bezel and TV install, glass it, and maybe even bondo it next weekend. lol, I've done so many that each time I get quicker and quicker.

I'm so ready for this interior to be done. About another month and it will. Then its time to pull the bed off and go to town on it........this time with a welder.

Nick...I dont know if you have ever heard of this product but its absoultly amazing. Its called slick sand which is a high filler primer that can be broken down with 320 grit paper. It will fill everything from 1/8" low. Its an evercoat product and I used it on my panels. I had some pits and alot of work...but when I sprayed this stuff and sanded it quick with some 400 it came out fukin smooth as hell. A friend of mine who is a pro recomended I used this..I was so upset cause I feel that I did way to much work for this. But like I say...if you have the right tools then the job gets done quicker and easier. Do a search and take a look at this stuff called slick sand. Its cool as hell!

Re: Teaching Fiberglass (part one and two)

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII'm Back!! Wooot!

God damn this is getting rediculous. Said my e-mail was invalid and it was right all along.

Anyway, I took pics but the progress really isn't to die for. Just sanding andf shaping the box like I've done with everything on this thread. Nothing new.

Vio0633, PM me. I want to know everything about this Slick Sand stuff. If for instance I sanded the shit out of the plastic pieces and there was the slightest grain still in it, would this stiff cover it? Do they sell in in quart size verses a gallon?,,,etc. I want to know everything cause if it is what you say it is, I'll pic up a quart and give it a try. Its a polyester base, I know that so it has a MEKL hardner for it. I have never worked with paints or mixing paints. Only resin and epoxy. With paints that require MEK hardner, how do you apply the hardner? In drops like with resin from a small tube?
What happens if a couple drops extra get mixed into the primer, will it cure really damn fast like resin? Also, my biggest worry is that I just bought a new gun. I've never shot it nor shot paint through a gun but i was gonna give it a try on this sub box I've been working on. Especially when it came to the clear coat. I don't want to sieze the gun with paint that hardened inside it. I guess my question is, with paints that require MEK, is there a science behind it when mixing in warm humid climates verses colder climates like with resin. i.e. more drops of MEK in the winter months when cold verses less drops in the summer when hot.

I need to pick your brain on this cause you have recent experience with it. I also want you to grill your Pro-painter partner over there as far as some of these questions, if you wouldn't mind.

Can you PM me a pic of your door panels. 1 pic of the non-slick sand primer and one with the primer. I want to see difference. Thanks

Re: Teaching Fiberglass (part one and two)

I just wanted to thank all those who have viewed this thread for information. I hope it has been helpful for you all and that you learned something. I always learn from others with regards to glassing and a number of other aspects. So don't take my word for gospel. Add this info the the info gathered from others who glass and you'll be a better, more overall knowledgeable person with regards to glassing.

18000+ hits is humbling. I never would have imagined that kind of response. Awesome.

Hell, its been averaging 1000+ hits every 2 weeks. I bet 20K+ by June. Weird, never would have thought.

OK I will try and answer all your questions nick. Slick sand is a high filler primer. It is 2 part and smells like fiberglass. It filled my panel holes that had the pits in them that were low of about 1/8 inch. Its asouloutly amazing man. Its hard to explain...but its like a spray on filler and primer that goes on smooth and fills everything in and also adheres to fiberglass very well. Take a look at google. Look up Slick sand made by evercoat. Please nick...get some of this stuff and try it out. Im telling you now....NO MORE FILLERS ARE NEEDED! This stuff is a filler and can be sanded with 320 or 400 grit. You can take a piece that you would think would take a month to sand...and do it all in one day with an exceptional finish.

Re: Teaching Fiberglass (part one and two)

It does require you the use of a hardner to add to it. If you buy a paint can you can have it measure right for a good mixture. I will get as many picts as I can get. The picture with the light weight filler and kitty hair was sprayed once and was VERY close to perfect. I was so upset...cause I did all this work and thought I had so much more to do but in reality...with the right tools and knowledge I was able to do the job right in 1/2 the time. I will talk to him and see if he can chime in. To give an example on how well this fills...I took my power window switch armrest out right...well scuffed the paint and it had the texture still in it. Sprayed 1 coat of slick sand on it and bam....it all went away. This shit is the bomb...I hope you reccomend this out to everyone and maybe help people out with the use of this nick. Again...please get some of this stuff bro.

Re: Teaching Fiberglass (part one and two)

It is thick product. I think he had to take the plastic piece out in his gun to make it work. When we were spraying it....if it got to thick it was the hardner making the solution alot harder...kinda like fiberglass. You just have to know how much hardner and filler you have to use. If you get some...the instructions should help you out nick.

I think you're gonna piss yourself if I don't use it, lol. Actually, I called a local supplier I use. They can get Slick Sand in quart size for $18.00. It uses an MEK hardner that can be measured and adjusted in cure rate like resin and hardner drops. It is thick. The painter I talked to said that you need a 2.0 of larger tip on the gun to shoot it. The supplier I use has a gun meant for shooting paints that thick for $30.00.

I WILL GIVE IT A TRY, Vio. Don't worry. If this stuff is what you say it is. I might resand, reprime (with Slick Sand) repaint and reclear everything I've done to ensure uniformity in part texture and quality.

How far does a quart go? Could I shoot my sub box with a quart and have some left over?

Re: Teaching Fiberglass (part one and two)

Yeah you will be fine as far as a quart. I use about 1 quart for my door panels and had 2 coats. Im sorry for beign so excited...I never thought that the ease of this stuff could make a piece look so good and be so simple to use nick. Yes it is thick and your absoulutly right on the use of drops to the filler to make it harden up and cure right. When you resand and use the slick sand...sand it with some 400 grit or higher...it will need to be sanded but when you do and its all done its going to be badass.

Double No Shit. I was stationed at NAS WillowGrove, PA. We had the VP 64 and 66 P3 squadrons there. I worked hand in hand with the squadron corpsman. I too was E5 when I left.

Yep. The guys I knew were cool. I worked aviation medicine with them as a liason. Yep, did everything from fly the P3 to London a short part of the way to giving shots to picking up pilots out of the wood when we had an airshow with a F14 that decided to kiss the deck rather than fly. Shit, that was messy. Grew up real quick after that. Then I went Green side with the Marines and grew up even more.
