Started the smoothing process

Like the title say, I started to smooth the pieces of my interior. The armrests are the only thing done right now but the glovebox, dash bezel, and the bottoms of my door panels will be done later. I followed the sticky almost perfectly. Only thing I did different was used 220 and 320 grit to start sanding after I started with the 120 (instead of 180 and 220). Here are the only pics I have right now, lemme know what ya think.

Sorry for the pic quality, but I didn't have my digital camera at the house today.

I think maybe 20 minutes to a half hour. I don't have the paint that I'm gonna use for the interior and exterior so whenever I get it I'll probably spend some more time working on it. I did find some spots where the primer was thin but I had some stuff to take care of, otherwise I would have fixed it.

Re: Started the smoothing process

Did the glovebox today. As with the armrests, there are some spots I need to re-do but I ran out of primer. I'm pretty happy with my progress so far and I'm really liking the smoothness of it.

Yeah but I'm not pulling the dash to paint it. Too much work and way too little time to do it (40+ hours a week summer and winter & school in the fall/spring). Otherwise, if you're just doing the hard pieces like I am, it's really easy, you just have to follow the directions in the sticky.

What you do is pull one from the junkyard, then you have all the time in the world to prep it and get it painted, then when you have a free weekend take your old one out and throw the new one in.. tada!!!!

edit- I have a thread in here somewhere that shows a bit of mine.. I smoothed most of the pieces I could take out, but I'm prolly gonna redo most of em because I did them all at different times and different temperatures which made the color come out different on all of em... there like a hair off...

Holy shit, never though of that. Good thinking. I may look into that, damn good thinking.

On another note, I smoothed out my fuse panel cover and started on the dash bezel. Pics may be up tomorrow. I'm sure everyone who sees the pictures will appreciate the "3-tone" dash I'll have (wasn't paying attention and bought red primer instead of gray but they were out of gray anyways).

Re: Started the smoothing process

Go a little more done last night and today. The fuse panel is done and in primer and I'm about 15-20 minutes worth of sanding away from being ready to prime the dash bezel. Time for pics...

Re: Started the smoothing process

it looks pretty sweet with that red primer. are you going for a black interior as well, or something different?

Re: Started the smoothing process

Going for a black and gray two-tone. Also the floor mat will be removed and black carpet will be thrown in there. I also think the red primer is pretty sweet but it's not staying. I don't know if I'm gonna be getting the paint to do those parts this summer or if I'll wait til I paint the truck next summer. Thanks for the comments guys

Re: Started the smoothing process

Started my door panel(s) yesterday, but I really only worked on one. To say the least, I ****ing HATED it and I don't look forward to starting the next one. I'm also gonna be making templates for some map pod covers, I like the way they look on other trucks and It'll give even more two-tone to the interior cause they'll be wrapped in gray fabric. Thank god for a grandfather in the upholstery business! Here's some pics for your viewing pleasure...

I hated doing my door panels too. AT least with second gens they nice and curvy and not sharp angles that are a PITA like on my first gen.

Trust me, the curves still suck. I tried using an orbital sander to get some of the texture out but, the curves didn't like that too much. Whatever, I still have the other to do. Good chance of pics being up tonight, I got everything but the door panels sprayed with paint and clear. they just need the clear wet sanded tomorrow.

Re: Started the smoothing process

Getcha the red scotchbrite pad that fits in a drill and it cuts it down fast. Be careful to not to run it too fast and melt the plastic.

Re: Started the smoothing process

I'm not too worried about it, I got it pretty smooth, as smooth as I can get it and it looks good.

Anyways, here are the pics of all the parts I smoothed, save for the door panels. Those MIGHT be this weekend (Disturbed and Slipknot concert in Pittsburgh).

Bro, if you were going for smooth i think you missed it... Although it looks badass its not smooth.. theres still a lot of texture on there. I've probably put a good 20 hours on each piece to get them glass smooth... hell my glovebox is soo smooth I can see the reflection of my girls skirt...in detail!!! hahaha

Re: Started the smoothing process

Same here, I put my dash pod in the other day was was driving around yesterday and the glare off the windshield was so bad I had to lay something over it. I sand all texture out of the parts and don't use filler primer to cover anything but the 20 year old super deep scratches.

FYI... I found that an ever easier method is to give it a quick ruff sand down just to get a little of the texture off and scratch it up a bit, then use filler primer... about 4 - 5 coats, then use a ground coat 4 - 5 times (the metallic sparkle shit) sand it down fine (1000, 2000 grit), add another ground coat if needed then start on the painting process...

It saves labor on your arm by not sanding so much. this way your not sanding something hard like plastic, your just sanding a layer or 2 of filler primer/ground coat off

don't get all pissy when I tell you this... but that is a half-ass way of doing it. You should NOT FILL THE TEXTURE. The proper way is to sand, sand, sand some more until it's smooth.
Filling things runs the risk of shrinkage and failure.

ok, fair enough, but the kicker is...

I do a final sand down with 3000 grit and then buff it out after baking it in my car in the florida heat for about a month or two...

Would you like to see a picture of my glovebox to see how perfect it came out...?

Just because you have your way doesnt mean its the right way, we take everyones opinions and find our own solution, this worked for me, someone else my find my way to be a hassle and find an easier way to get it smooth..

so before you jump in a thread to bash someones way of doing something maybe you should realize that there are a million different ways of doing something, hell go ask paint toad.

it it works for you, then that's great. I wasn't necessarily bashing, just giving you a heads up that filler may not exactly be the best approach. and I think paint toad would definitely agree with me...

No, I didn't miss it. Number one, my camera was on a different setting so the pictures were terribly blurry. Number two, I still have to level out the clean with 1500 and 2000 grit paper. Trust me man, I followed the sticky just the way it says and I'm still not done yet so just as you said to Kovz about bashing (even though he wasn't, do
