Smooth Interior Process
First and foremost clean your interior parts first! Any cleaning products will make it horrible fisheye everywhere on you if you do not. I washed mine with dish soap and made sure to get them super clean.
Sanded down with 120 grit, then once that started getting smooth, moved on to 180 grit, then lastly 220. ![]() ![]() ![]() Wax and degreased the interior pieces (some will say get a specific one made for plastics but I did not) used PPG brand Spay with bulldog plastic adhesion promoter Spray with G2/slick sand polyester primer (bondo that sprays) LOL! Fills in the all the groves that I want to get rid of so that it will be smooth like glass. Sorry I dont have a pic of that step Then I sanded down again with 220grit Reprimed Wetsanded with 600 grit make sure you have plenty of water on the object that you wetsand ![]() Door panels will have to be built up several times to get the smooth look. So be ready to prime, sand, prime sand. After many hours here is your final product: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Re: Smooth Interior Process
Ok, question. Say you had a line in the plastic molding that you wanted to smooth over. What would you use to do this?
Clean the parts real well, some kind of body filler, then sand. What filler works best? The area i'm looking at is the plastic panel under the steering wheel. I want to smooth it out. |

Re: Smooth Interior Process
Do you think I could still get the same look out of a rattle can? i would still follow all the steps but i would be using a rattle can instead of a paint gun. Would it still look and turn out good?????

Re: Smooth Interior Process
This question is directed at Mr. Toad.. or any of you painters out there.
I am looking for a spray gun set so i can spray Slick Sand and primer on my interior plasic parts. I was looking at this set Eastwood Company: Auto Tools, Body Repair, Classic Car Restoration, House of Kolor Paint, Powder Coating Thoughts? would user for slick sand, and then primer. Maybe color down the line, but more then likely just the prep stuff right now. |

Re: Smooth Interior Process
you need a big tip for slick sand....you can do it with the 1.8 tip
but if you are buying a gun exclusively for slick sand go over 2.0 tip i used a sata with a 2.5 and it was awesome |

Re: Smooth Interior Process
just follow DB's procedure he made a few things confusing so let me add
it COMPLETLEY with some explanation ok first you want to wash the peice up good, if it has any sticky things or nething on it try some goo be gone or something.... Then use a WAX AND GREASE REMOVER, since i used rattle can i used pro cleano from walmart. Then you sand with 120 grit (100G on door panels glove box and the more dense plastic, you can do 120 but its really hard) once 120 is smooth move to 180, then once 180 is smooth move to 220g Then you want to get bull dog adehsion promotor, also at walmart, follow instructions on can will tell to spray once wait 3-5 min spray again paintable in 10 mins. spray the peice with filler primer (I used dupli color high build), once again spray 2 coats and follow directions. Make sure primer is fully dry and sand with 220 and be careful not to sand hard. Once your done sanding blow the peice off, wash it if necessary but make sure its 100 percent dry then spray another 2 coats of primer Then sand with 220g again. This process of build up may need to be repeated several times, once you are happy with the smoothness wetsand it with 600g once again softley and make sure the peice is covered with water. rinse the peice off and let it dry or dry with a polishing cloth, ALWAYS make sure your paint is dry before you touch it or try to sand it unless you want finger prints and stuff in it. After the peice is dry spray it with 3-5 light coats (since rattle can it will take this) and if its not got any flakes in the paint or nething you can wetsand inbetween coats just wetsand very lightly, i would personally just wetsand on last coat. Then let it dry and spray up to 5 coats of clear, be careful to not overspray or you will get orange peel, more coats doesnt make it more glossy. At the last coat after it dries a day if your not happy with finish then wetsand with 1000g and move up to w/e you feel is a good number i.e. 2000g or 3000g. Then use a rubbing compound and buff it but make sure you keep plenty of compound on the peice and do a section at a time. use compound 4x I would recommend kits scratch out and also apply 4x (read directions) I'm not sure on the weight, i dont believe you are suppose to apply wax to freshly painted surfaces, i would ask paint toad, but so long i would wax with meguires cleaner wax, and meguires gold, or other preference of waxes. If you have any questions feel free to PM me Most ppl use the same as the exterior of their truck, if you have charcoil interior that might look a little goofy white idk. |
