headliner missing

are there any cheap solutions to replacing a headliner? I don't need help on how to repair one, I just straight up don't have a headliner in my blazer.

Re: headliner missing

That depends on how cheap you want to be. The cheapest way is to get some thumb tacs, but I wouldn't suggest that one, ha.

Re: headliner missing

well since no one ever answerd this for some reason, and its not that old i guess i will...

what i would do is just go to the junkyard and get a head liner, and recover it to fit your needs.

Re: headliner missing

go to a fabric store like hancocks or something they sell headliner material like what goes in other cars. you'll have to double up on the width though, worth a shot. If you're feeling creative, you can find some metal rods and make a bow hung headliner. or build a mold and make a new one. Of course the easiest thing to do may be a junkyard like JoPre said.

EDIT: I should have mentioned the headliner material is just that, material, no cardboard backer but you can go to autozone or something and get the plastic push clips [like thumbtacks HAHA]

Try LMC Truck or JC Whitney. They usually have that stuff.

I know he's missing the entire thing. I was saying he can piece it together cut it to the right shape and use the clips to hold it up. What autoparts store has it?
It is 4.99 a yard at hancocks. [here*]

...daaaamn,
I know here that hancocks has soo many "discounts" all the time that it may u be why it's so cheap here... you can get one of those "customer cards" which takes a crap load off, and then after you sign up there's lots of coupons in some mail out flyer they send out on occasion, usually worth it even if you don't go a lot because it's free. I use it a lot though because I do upholstery on the side, and I also help make props [and costumes] for my old highschool and a middle school theater here.

Re: headliner missing

Not to "hijack" anybody's thread(sorry man), but I have a question as well, and don't wanna bother with creating a WHOLE new thread. Anyway, is vinyl too heavy to use on a headliner, or do you just need to use PLENTY of glue???

Re: headliner missing

if you use super heavy duty glue like 3M 90 and let it dry real good before putting it back in, it should be ok.

I just redone mine with a thin fleece like blanket. Didn't use any foam, glad I'm didn't cause it would have been too thick then. I used some spray on adhesive from advance and it turned out well.

I'll post pics tomorrow if any one wants to see

Re: headliner missing

JoPre Yes you can do it with out foam, but unless you make a bow headliner I wouldn't. Bluecore Foam from home depot works good because it is stiff and if you use a heat gun to heat it up, you can mold it to the right shape. Tack it up in the front at the corners and work your way into the center front with the heat gun, then slowly work your way back in a zig zag tacking it up as it's heated up [not too much or it will droop while cooling, just warm enough to get the right shape. and so it cools down quickly] until you've gotten the wwhole piece formed.

[EDIT: SAFETY warning, bluecor is toxic when burned/melted, have the doors open wear a mask and if you are careful about warming it up, you won't have the problem, but it happens and if you do burn a hole in it, get some great stuff and fill in the hole then shave it down]

Syko, see hofs post , use heavy duty glue, I use SHORT staples on the folds when I use vynl.

If I can get some extra money or come across another job like this, I will take pics and make a howto

Re: headliner missing

WireBiterMonkey - i am planning on just using my stock headliner backer..... i am confused about your answer why would i use the foam in the truck.

what i mean to do is to take out the head liner take off the fabric and re wrap it.
my question is , after i scrap off the stock foam can i just recover the backer without foam? or can i recover it over the exsisting foam possiably?

Re: headliner missing

oh ok, I thought you were missing the backer*

Yeah, just leave that foam on there, clean up the foam with some Murphy's Oil Soap and then re-wrap it.
Sorry got confused myself.

Re: headliner missing

just wipe it on there or what? ( the murphy's)
seems like that would effect the adhesiveness of the glue. but i guess i dont know what im talking about lol.
what exactly does that do anyway?

Re: headliner missing

I brush it on to the old ones with a 2" paintbrush and let it soak for 10 - 15 minutes and use an icescraper [that I dip into the murphy's oil soap while working] to get any of the old glue and crud off. It just makes a clean surface so the new glue holds better. Kind of like wet sanding when you are painting something. Murphy's Oil Soap is a soft soap, and is used for cleaning brushes/ polishing wood/ things like that. It won't damage anything it'll just help you clean real careful.

I've never had any problems with murphy's oil soap messing anything up,
and you shouldn't be scraping hard, the crud should just come off,.

so all I can say is if you're scared of "fvcking" it up, then don't do it, because you will....

Re: headliner missing

I removed the old foam completely, and this is what I ended up with. Been 4 days or so and it's still holding great. Need to run over it with a lint brush Ignore the messy garage, I haven't cleaned it for a while

this thing was in horrible shape before. Still need to do the visors but I'm planning to get some from the junkyard that are a little stiffer.

looks nice, I'm not a fan of fleece, but that's my own problem. haha
How well does it hold w/o the foam? I'd be worried about it bending/warping too much and breaking?

I have a headliner for a 82-93 S10 single cab for sale. It's ABS plastic and not cheap cardboard and it's black, BRAND NEW out of original box. It's a beautiful headliner and was excited when I got it but will not fit my 95 S10. MY LOSS YOUR GAIN!

Item is up for sale on Ebay... check it out!
