Got an overhead console

Picked up an overhead console for $8.00 at -wrench it from a Blazer with a sunroof. Its got the Home link and mode button. I just wanted to know if I got everything I need for this too work if not I can go back and get the part cuz there was like five of these there. Also is this the compass and temp sensor?(I circled it) Or are they located somewhere else?

Re: Got an overhead console

The part you circled is the compass but I don't see the module there. (Hopefully, I'm just missing it.) The temp sensor mounts on the front of the core support. You'll need that, too.

Ok thanks. There is a module there...bad angle. Is there anything else I need?? I keep reading about something that connects to the tach. Ill go back tomorrow for the temp sensor...is it on the driver or passenger side?

Temp sensor is mounted dead center on the core support.

Re: Got an overhead console

So the VSS wire is on the black connector on the computer PIN #3 according to this. http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f200/o...nstall-214399/ Just wondering if it is correct with the year of my truck which is a 1997 and the Blazer it came out of is also a 1997 so it should work in theory.....right???

Also is there a special way I gotta wire up the home link too??? Or is it all tied in with everything else?

Re: Got an overhead console

I can't tell you about the wiring, but the Homelink is built in to the console. Once you have power to the console, you just need to program the Homelink and you're set.

Re: Got an overhead console

tyhodge...I can sell you a complete overhead console with trip computer and autodim mirror with the wiring harness (up to but not including) the C209 plug. Doesn't include the temp sensor. When I swapped my temp/compass unit out for a trip computer unit (bought this one to sell or for spare parts), I didn't see any extra wires for the temp sensor so it must run with the rest of the wires to the C209 plug.

There's a pic of the compass module on a short console. (It's the piece on the far left.) Some overhead consoles have them built in.

I have the long console, so I just removed the compass module and tucked it up under the headliner. Works perfectly that way. (You just have to make sure it's oriented at a 90* angle to the unit.)

Serial data bus goes to the purple wire at the OBD II plug under the left side dash.

Re: Got an overhead console

To bench test the module, you can wire it into the OBD2 port (use probes/pins) with the correct wire colors and give the module power. This should be enough to get it to work and test it.

PS. Does anyone know what years the mode consoles will work with and will they work with any OBD2 chevrolet vehicle?

Edit: I have the exact console in my truck btw. Flint is crawling with mode overhead consoles and they are a dime a dozen.

Re: Got an overhead console

There are 2 types/years of consoles
1993-1997 consoles
1998-2005 consoles
they need to match the trucks in those years to be compatible.

here are the links I've gathered over the past year
http://s-series.org/component/option...,46/task,item/
http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f200/o...nstall-214399/
http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f62/ov...t-here-285146/
http://forums.s-series.org/viewtopic.php?t=32828

and a file for wiring colors...

Re: Got an overhead console

Ok guys I went to the junk yard and got me a new display...it has the on/off button(I dont need the fuel economy stuff I got a scanguage.)
My problem is that there is no VSS wire on the harness(dark green/white)
There is only

Brown
Grey
Light Green/black
Dark Green
Black/white
Yellow.

Is the VSS wire the dark green or not? Or is there something that Im missing??
P.S Got the display out of a long console

Re: Got an overhead console

I know I'm highjacking this thread, but I have question on the modules. I have both the On/Off and the Mode. I have wiring for both. The problem lies in the On/Off has the spot for the Compass Module wires to plug right in. On the Mode it doesn't have the spot? Does this have the module already installed in the module? Or do I have to hard wire the compass module in? The On/Off was out of a Blazer. The Mode was out of 99 Astro.

Thanks,
Nick

Re: Got an overhead console

Some of the modules have integrated compass while others had the external compass wiring. I think it involved whether or not the overhead console had homelink. All of them with homelink have the external compass from what I've seen.

Re: Got an overhead console

Thanks man.
This one did not have homelink. I noticed that when I got it from the junkyard.
I am having difficulty finding this "Brown Wire" I do not have it the wiring harness I have. Either. I have wiring harness from both On/Off and Mode versions. I have an extra Green Wire. Its pure green. I wonder if that's it. According to the diagram's I've found Brown is "Dimming Switch" Do you know anything?

Thanks again,
Nick

Re: Got an overhead console

Depending on the year you have, their wiring colors varied slightly. I'd have to know what year your mode console it is.

Re: Got an overhead console

Thanks alot man!
Yours looks good S-10 man.
The only problem I seem to have now is that the temp says its 104 deg, and I know its like 80. Is there a way to reset it? Or did I wire it wrong?
Also, what is the proper way to reset the Compass? I think it's right but I have to drive down the road to make sure.
Thanks for all the help guys.
One thing I would do though, I've copied some of the pictures that everyone has posted, and they all have the DATA Class 2 Wire labeled wrong. Its supposed to go to the Yellow wire. I used the doc file someone had one here, it was right, but just for anyone elses knowledge.

Re: Got an overhead console

ive been wantin to do this in my 88, i read i either needed cruise control or something else (cant remember), but both of which my truck dont have. can anyone confirm this is true. if i were to hook it up, id only really want the temp and compass to work, is that just putting power to the console and than running the temp sensor to the front core support since the compass is built in?

Re: Got an overhead console

Rhotpursuit, thanks for the info, on one of my diagrams it said something about short consoles having the external compass, but I could've swore I've seen a shorty with internal compass. Either way, thanks for the info.

Tyhodge07, to add the temperature, you are suppose to wire up a speed wire to account for wind temps. I don't know how much it would be affected if you don't have this wire. But to wire it up you have to have an electrical speedo.

I also have a 188 page pdf for a 2003 s-series that details all of the gauges, center console and wiring diagrams if anyone wants it, I want to put it on an online server if possible.

hmm, i think that was the other i didnt have that i couldnt remember from above. i wonder if mouting the temp sensor towards the back somewhere where less air would hit it, if it would be better than the front if not hooking up to the speed wire. is the cruise control built in with the speed wire or something, cuz when i was reading on this it was saying i either had to have 1 of the 2?

Re: Got an overhead console

I can't verify this, but I imagine there is an electronic speedsensor somewhere that gives the cruise control a signal. If you have that, it might work. But it depends on the Pulses per mile it gives out.

Re: Got an overhead console

i found this posted awhile back, but may help some people.
http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f200/o...nstall-214399/

i see it talks about my year but didnt mention (unless i skipped over it, since ido that alot) anything about t he cruise control or the elect speedo

i also came across an 88 s15 blazer that someone installed one into, but i seen it had the cruise.. im thinkin if i dont have the little green box as in t he link above, than ill just have to add cruise to do this the right way.

found this to help you on calibrating your compass:

Quote:
Calibrating Compass

Find a parking lot where you can do some WIDE 360 degree circles. Heck, it'd even work to drive around the edge of a parking lot. Important thing here is you MUST be able to make at least 2-3 circles, and EACH "circle" must take at least 15 seconds or so. In other words, tire-smokin parking lot "donuts" will NOT work here, but you might do a couple anyways just cause it is fun :^)!

Once you are ready to circle, press down the "on/off" button and hold it. WHILE HOLDING THAT BUTTON, ALSO press the "US/Met" button (so you are holding down BOTH buttons) for approx 5 seconds. The display will say "var", which is your queue to set the "variance" for the compass. You set the "variance" by releasing the buttons, then hitting the "US/Met" button to scroll thru the different variances. Once you get to the correct one, hit "On/Off" to set it into the compass. A map showing the variance to be used for various geographic locations is listed below

3. Next, repeat step 2 again with the buttons, but this time hold the two buttons PAST when the word "var"
shows up, and eventually the word "cal" will light instead. Once the word "cal" comes up, start your driving in
circles. After anywhere from 1 to 3 circles, the compass will calibrate itself and the word "cal" will go out.
Once this happens, your compass is calibrated!

and forgot to post the rest of the info i found from the calibrating compass post:

Quote:
Compatabillity: The problem is that gm switched the VSS and class 2 data signals in 97. Pre 98 oh console computers will not communicate after 30
seconds with a post 97 computer, and vice versa. If your truck is a pre 98, you need a pre 98 oh console computer, if it is a post
97, you need a post 97 oh console computer.

Sorry for the tripple posts, i dont see an edit button and feel some of this info will help and save others time from searching

edit: i guess the edit button is only there for a few minutes than is gone.. reason why i never see it, lol
